5Copan High School brought their BetaClub members for a tour of the station tolearn about careers in broadcasting. Ourexecutive producer and main anchorteam spoke to them about careers inbroadcasting including anchoring,reporting, meteorology and sports.

Beta Club is an academic and leadershiporganization. The students are chosenbased on grades and leadership skills.This club provides students anopportunity to compete and participatein things other than sports. In March2018 thirty (30) of the students willparticipate in the Oklahoma State BetaConvention in Norman, Oklahoma.They will be competing in academicsubjects, poetry, creative writing, livingliterature, advertising design, scrapbook,banner, spotlight on service, on-site art,and many visual art projects.Throughout the year they do manyservice projects and fundraisers.Students are expected to maintain theirgrades and complete at least 25 hours ofcommunity service each year.

3On April 19, 2018, Amy Miller (HRCoordinator), Roger Herring (Directorof Engineering Operations) and DougBonebrake (Production Manager)participated in a job fair followed by theStudent Awards Luncheon at theOklahoma Associations of BroadcastersEducation Foundation Student DayCareer Fair from 10:00 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.This career fair was designed to attractstudents to visit many of the booths andfind out about internships or jobopenings. Many students who wereplanning to graduate in May orDecember of 2018 or looking for a fieldto major in attended. Amy Millerinformed the attendees about the station,broadcast industry and any current jobopenings.

2KTUL has an established internshipprogram that is designed to broadeneducational development of thosestudying for careers in broadcasting aswell as assisting members of thecommunity to acquire skills needed forbroadcast employment. Each internapplicant must be enrolled in anaccredited college, university,vocational school or high school work-study program. The applicant must bemajoring in communications,journalism, broadcast productiontechniques, business administration,marketing or some other field having adirect relationship to broadcasting.Also, the intern will select onedepartment out of the five departments.Once the intern is selected, he or shewill intern between 10 to 30 hours perweek in the assigned department for thatsemester. During that time, the internwill learn the different aspects of thatdepartment. Once their internship iscompleted, then the supervisor of thatdepartment will inform the intern’sprofessor that they have completed theirinternship successfully.

3Students and sponsors from MadisonMiddle School in Bartlesville, OK,toured KTUL and our weather center tolearn about weather and broadcasting.Students also were the in studioaudience for our 11:00 a.m. newscasts.Students learned about the sciencebehind weather and the educationalrequirements to become a broadcastmeteorologist. Students were allowed topractice their broadcasting skills in frontof our new video wall.
