ECHNOLOGY PARK

REALITY

A 20-year dream may finally be areality as the Stout Foundationmoves to aid in the development of..a technology park for the Universityof Wisconsin-Stout.

Because of the highly technicalnature of many UW-Stout programsand the specific need for Stoutstudents to have exposure tobusiness and industry, it has beenthought that having a specializedtechnology park near the universitywould provide several advantages toboth business and universitycommunities.

Students would reap variousbenefits: the opportunity to work forsmall, growing companies in newhigh technology areas and handle"real time" problems, as well as toobserve business development froma variety of angles.

Businesses, in turn, would havecasual accessibility to Stout's faculty, various data bases and its veryspecialized library, in addition to asubstantial work force with specificinterest in the industry.

Background

In 1968 the Stout Foundationpurchased a tract of land on theeastern edge of Menomonie with theidea of developing a research andtraining park. Over the years thatidea has been dormant, but recentlythe Foundation formed a technologypark committee to explore

possibilities. In the summer of 1987, the Stout

Foundation contracted with a TwinCities consulting firm to c<;mduct afeasibility study. The results of thatstudy were available in early 1988.The businesses and industriessurveyed expressed a definiteinterest in locating facilities in atechnology park because of theadvantages UW-Stout's presencewould offer. Several respondentsindicated an immediate interest indeveloping sites in the park.

"We were pleasantly surprised bythe enthusiastic response," said M.James Bensen, Stout's dean of theSchool of Industry and Technologyand chair of the Stout FoundationTechnology Park Committee."We quickly realized we have aviable idea here."

The Foundation hired an architectto develop a plan for the actual siteand to meet with a variety of cityand state officials to explore possiblefunding for sewer, water, street andother essential utilities for the park.

The goal is to have a basicinfrastructure, for the park, in placeby.early 1989 and begin actualconstruction of various sitesimmediately thereafter. Alumni andfriends of the university with aninterest in the technology parkshould contact the Stout Foundationoffice, 715/232-1256.

2HARITABLE GIFT ANNUITIES-

GIFTS THAT KEEP ON GIVING

L.R. Charlene Smith, Helen Speidel, Shirley Gebhart, Joyce Bates, Barb Stai, Bobbie Hughes,Nan Niehaus, Patricia Resinger and David Williams.

There is a way for you to increaseyour retirement income and, at thesame time, make a generous gift toUW-Stout's d~velopment. Acharitable gift annuity allows you todo both of these things.

With a charitable gift annuity, youmake a gift to the Stout UniversityFoundation in exchange for aguaranteed annual income payment. That payment continues as long asyou and/or one other beneficiary areliving, after which the proceedsrevert to a UW-Stout educationalprogram in a manner you havedesignated.

To demonstrate how this annuityworks, a UW-Stout alumnus had ablock of stock paying a 2-3 percentdividend, which he was using aspart of his retirement income. Thisindividual created a charitable giftannuity by giving. this stock to theStout University Foundation. Withhis particular age, the Foundationcould guarantee him a 9.1 percentlifetime annuity rate-three times thereturn he was formerly getting! Therate paid to individuals is establishedby the national Council on GiftAnnuities and is determined fromactuarial tables which factor in thedonor's age.

Not only did this alumnus triplehis annual income from this asset, but he also gained an immediateincome tax deduction from the gift.He also received the satisfaction ofknowing that a fund would beestablished in his name, at hisdeath, to provide scholarshipsupport for UW-Stout students.

If you would like additionalinformation on charitable gift

annuities, please write: StoutUniversity Foundation, Louis SmithTainter House, UW-Stout,Menomonie, WI 54751, or call (715)232-1256. We can provide you with arate/yield sample by for your

specific circumstances. Wewould be pleased to talk to youabout these annuities and otherinstruments which may help you inplanning for both retirement andcharitable gifts to UW-Stout. All

requests for information are handledconfidentially.

Placement rates for the 1986-87year may be the best ever, according to Bob Dahlke, director ofStout's Career Planning andPlacement Office. Graduates frombachelor's programs placed 96.62percent and 92.8 percent of thesecategorized themselves as placed intheir major field of study or a relatedfield.

Dahlke attributed Stout's highplacement rates to a number offactors, one of which was the quality"work ethic" students possess."Industry keeps talking about thework ethic and Stout personifiesthat," he said. "That is the singlemost common thing that I hear.Employers are after the work ethic."

Dahlke credited Stout's specializedprograms as offering students "aneducation that allows them to go towork day one," to "prepare forwhat the world needs." The highplacement rates show that "Stout isstaying in touch with what is neededout there."

Other factors affecting placementrates included a 4 percent increase inthe number of companies recruitingon campus in the past year and anincrease in students participating incooperative education as well as inthe university's annual careerconference.

About 500 students will receive theirdegrees the first week in August.Graduates automatically become membersof the Alumni Association and willreceive the new alumni publication threetimes a year, the Alumnus magazine, notices of area alumni get-togethers,reunions and special activities. Don'tforget to alert the Alumni office of anychange in address.

The spring annual fund phonathon wasa success! The 20 student callers contacted 7,600 alumni and received pledgesin excess of $46,000. For those of youwho have a last name beginning withM-Z and weren't contacted by phone, wesent a note mentioning we tried butmissed you!! With only 37 percent ofUW-Stout's budget derived from statemonies, the annual fund is an importantaddition to the budget. If you did make apledge this year, the university faculty, staff and students thank you for aiding inthe learning process.

We've received several inquiries latelyabout placing the university in a will.
