W need to know. This knowingness

speaks to us through our gut feelings, hunches, impressions,

and perceptions. Yet we constantly talk ourselves out of this awless

    inner wisdom.

When we fall in love (or meet someone new), we know instantly

what the relationship holds in store for us. We remember our soul

agreement. Yet we most often ignore it. Heres an example from my

life: I intuitively knew the exact nature of my relationship with my

now-departed husband, Paul, when I rst met him.

    Recognition . . .

After a long, delicious, rock-climbing day in the summer of1978, our muscles aching from the dizzying walls of Eldorado Can-

yon, my friend Joel and I are feeling happy and tired. Were hungry

and looking for a place to eat in town.

As we walk, we see a tall thin man approaching and waving. He

knows Joel and we gather on the sidewalk to talk.

As Paul, my future husband, stands under a streetlight in the

evening heat telling us about his bike ride, light shimmers aroundhis head, creating a halo. He looks like an angel to me. Im terried

and drawn to him at once. I know him before he says a word.

When he does speak, my world rips open into powerful soul-

shaking recognition. I remember him. I feel devastating love, laugh-

ter, bliss, and lossall at once.

As I extend my hand in greeting, I know that somehow this

relationship will change me, break me apart. But the light emanat-

ing from Paul tells me that hes my greatest teacher and I need to

    take the journey.

After that meeting, it takes several months for our rst date to

manifestboth of us knowing in the deep pools of our intuition

that this was a major shift, that a cosmic crack in our worlds is about

    to unfold.

It takes a while to move from joyful rst embrace to the stun-

ning cancer diagnosis that left him with only two weeks left to live

to holding his frail body in my arms as his spirit slipped away. Yet

the journey that Paul takes me on teaches me everything I need to

know about my soul missionwho I am and why Ive dropped

into this physical realm. (Although that wasnt the lesson I wanted

    to learn at the time.)

Together we become spiritual travelers. We visit shamans, Na-

tive American healers who carry him to the other realms, as well as

priests, therapists, nutritionists, herbalists, energy workers, and con-

ventional cancer docs who love us passionately and weep with us at

the end.We spend too much time in hospital rooms enduring sci- pro-

cedures that suck our souls dry. When the room is lled with doc-

tors, Pauls mothers fervent praying, endless tubes and drugs, we

slide between the sheets deep into our comasblissful, dream-lled

travels to a parallel world of giggling babies and white picket fences.

He builds me a house in his delirium, asking me to bring the ham-

mer. He wants it to be solid, he says, eyes closed, pointing to thehospital room wall in front of us.

On the last day, Ill rage, protest, and refuse to give him back to

the angels who gather around the bed. And in that nal moment of

his crossing, hell show me his spirit with such clarity that it forever

    takes my doubt away.

Yet on that innocent, warm, happy evening of sweet dreams and

sexy hope, in that one moment of meeting Paul under the street

lamp, I felt the love, loss, joy, and grief all at once.

Today, fueled by the pain and wisdom of that shared journey,

along with the unique gifts I brought into this lifetime, Ive created

the work that I love passionately and am successful at. As an intui-

tive, I see peoples great potential, what they came here to do, who

they came here to be, and what their challenges are in this lifetime.

Ive been intuitive since my childhood in New Orleans, inherit-

ing my Creole mothers telepathy and clairvoyance, but I didnt under-

stand this powerful gift until long after Pauls death. I spent years

never quite knowing what the visions meant, what to do with the

dreams that came true down to the last detail, or how to decipher

and share the powerful images and feelings I got when I spoke to

    people.

Falling in love has always opened wide my intuitive senses.

Love has taught me that the heart rules intuition. We must open the

heart to feel the truth of anything or anyone. To nd your true work

or your true love, your heart must be wide open, vulnerable, and

    fearless.

INTUITION feeling. It is, above all else, a feeling

from the heart. It marinates you in condence, wisdom, and

empowermentnever in fear. Its the connection to your true self,

your raw, unrened truth unclouded by the monkey mind. Its the

shimmer of a spirit in the corner when you turn your head and the

dream that wakes you up and stays with you. Its the knowingness

that comes when you stop talking. Its the feeling that overpowers

you in spite of logic. Its the voice whispering in your ear, and thenudge you often ignore in deference to being practical. Its our right-

brain, expanded consciousness guiding our journey as planned.

Your intuition is your sacred pool of divine knowing. Its a gate-

way to your higher self. Its not linear, logical, or realistic. Its your

dreamy, gut-feeling creativitythe part of you that knows the truth

but doesnt know why its true. Your intuition is your sweet spot.

Robert Graves, an English poet, scholar, and novelist, said, Intuitionis the supra-logic that cuts out all the routine processes of thought

and leaps straight from the problem to the answer.

    WHAT IS INTUITION?

The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a

faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the

servant and has forgotten the gift.

Intuition can navigate you successfully toward nding true love

as effortlessly as a dream in the night. It works better than dating

sites, speed dating, or singles events. Love is the gateway to your

    intuition.

Youll never be as intuitive as when you fall in love. Your energy

centers are most open and receptive, and your monkey mind quiets

down. You look into a strangers eyes and remember him from an-

other time. You know when hell call. You feel his embrace long be-

fore it actually happens. And you sense what hes feeling even when

the two of you are apart.

Were all a little more comfortable with intuitive loving than we

are with intuitive livingusing intuition for our everyday life and

career choices. Yet we can tap into this portal of sacred guidance

whenever we open our hearts. When you fall in love, nurture this

sacred gateway to the unknown. When youre not in love, love any-

way. It will open the door to your divine intuition and your highest

    self.

    ARE WE ALL INTUITIVE?

Yes, we ARE all intuitive. Were all naturally able to access our right-

brain hemispherethe doorway to our intuition, creativity, and di-vinity. We talk ourselves out of listening to this inner guidance by

focusing on our left-brain chatterour linear-thinking, practical,

realistic mind. We see logical thinking touted on the news, at work,

and among our family members as the truth, the whole truth, and

nothing but the truth. Yet our left-brain logic is only telling us half

of the truth. This supreme logic we live by has gotten us exactly

where we are todayafraid, disconnected, unfullled, unhappy, and in search of meaning.

Being practical above all else does not get us where we want to

    12 / S U E F R E D E R I C K

go. It doesnt lead to a happy, fullled life. Our left-brain logic talks

us out of being who we really are and doing the work we came here

to do. And it sometimes talks us out of loving who we came here to

    love.

Remember, you are NOT your thoughts. Youre an energy be-

ing, a pulsing wave of light connected to the energetic fabric that

makes up the entire universe. Quantum physicists refer to this phe-

nomenon as the membrane theory. When they say that were all

made of the same energywaves of light that join everything and

everyonetheyre describing intuition! Your consciousness is so

much bigger than your mind. Your feelings and intuition connect

you to all other beings in our universe. Your intuition is a gateway

to all the knowledge, answers, and guidance youve ever wanted.

When youre afraid, you block your intuition. Fear is the oppo-

site of love, and fear shuts your portal to the divine. When youre

tapped into fear youre hooked into low-vibration negative energy

or what I call pitiful thinking. This type of thinking makes your

body feel bad; it drains your energy and makes you anxious. It

clouds your connection to your higher self.

Intuition and divine guidance speak up in the quiet moments

when your fear and mental chatter pause and you simply know

whats trueyou know it in your bones. Its a peaceful knowing

brought to you courtesy of your highest self. Our intuition announces exactly what we need to know exactly

when we need to know it to fulll our mission. Its timing is always

perfect. And it uses any means available to reach us. You have the

dream when you need the dream. You feel a strong urge to do some-

thing exactly when its time to do it. You get a visual image of some-

thing you need to know while youre waiting at a stoplight. And you

know youve met your soul mate the moment you hear his voice.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF ITS INTUITION?

How do you know your monkey mind isnt playing tricks? The an-

swer lies in this question: how does the information make you feel

    when you receive it?

Intuition comes from the angels. Its not dark or scaryeven

when its warning you about an upcoming crisis. It comes in a fre-

quency of light and love. It makes you feel wise, compassionate, and

empowered by knowledge. It shines light on your confusion and fear.

Its the voice of the divine within you, and divine order is always on

    your side.

Pay attention to the gut feelings that make you feel excited, joy-

ful, compassionate, empowered, and loving. Those are your intuitive

thoughts. Whatever lls you with love and joy is right for you. Dis-

miss whatever lls you with fear and dread.

Mothers and their children have a natural intuitive connection

because theyre connected by a raw potent cellular love for one

another. Heres an example of the mother-daughter intuitive con-

    nection:

One afternoon when my daughter was about eight years old, I

got a call from her school. Sarah fell in the gym, and we think shemight have a concussion. Please come get her right away.

Every mom fears that kind of call. It instantly sent fear waves

through my stomach. On my way, I said jumping into the car. As I

drove through traffi c, I asked God to guide me and help me through

    this crisis.

While waiting at a red light, I instantly saw a vision of my daugh-

ter Sarah vomiting. I saw it vividly twice. Yet the overwhelmingfeeling that surrounded the vision was that everything would be

OK. I felt calm, even though I saw her distraught and throwing up.

When I arrived at the school, Sarah ran up to me crying and said

she had just thrown up twice. The teacher whispered that it was a

sign of concussion and I needed to get Sarah to the hospital right

away. We were only ve minutes from the emergency room, but I

made the drive in two. Yet underneath my stress and urgency was the

powerful knowledge that came from the vision and my intuition

    that she would be ne.

We spent nearly ten hours at the hospital, where Sarah had a

CAT scan and underwent numerous tests and hours of observation.

She did indeed have a mild concussion, and she felt sick most of the

day. Yet by the time I got her home, we knew she was out of danger.

Overall, I was able to handle a scary day without getting lost in

fear, thanks to the powerful intuitive guidance I received on the

way to Sarahs school. That guidance allowed me to know that the

problem was serious and that Sarah was in great pain and discom-

fort, but that she would be OK. I saw her throwing up at the exact

moments she was sick. Im still astounded by the perfect timing and

detail of the intuitive guidance I received that day.

    TRUSTING WHAT YOU GET

How often have you ignored a hunch? Dismissed an intuitive feeling

or a precognitive dream? Each time you ignore your inner knowing, you weaken its voice within you. Your intuition is like a muscle: The

more you use it, the stronger it gets. The less you use it, the weaker

    it gets.

If you ask for divine guidance and are given a sign or a gut feel-

ing, pay attention to it! Our guides get frustrated when we con-

stantly ignore them. Theyll decide were not an open channel for

guidance and nd someone else who is willing to listen. When I rst started working as a career coach in the 1970s, I got

intuitive hunches and visions about my clients. I saw them involved

in careers other than the ones they were currently pursuing. I had

OK, keep waiting for the bus.) My intuition was ALWAYS right. By

following my intuitive travel sense, I created a magical and divinely

    guided trip.

My favorite part was the day I spent in Liverpool. A lifelong

Beatles fan, I arrived in Liverpool without reservations for the famed

History of The Beatles guided bus tour. During that extraordinary

day of following my intuition, I received a free ticket to the sold-out

Beatles tour, got a free sack lunch for the trip, and struck up a friend-

ship with Yoko Onos hand-appointed guardian for John Lennons

childhood home. It was one of the most amazing days of my life.

This unplanned, intuitively guided England adventure was the

most enjoyable vacation Ive ever taken. On the ight home, I made

a decision that I would never again dismiss my gut feelingeven

over the smallest details. I would completely trust my divine guid-

ance in every area of life. My guides have since rewarded me a hun-

dredfold with stronger and stronger guidance.
