I SEE SOMETHING YOU DON’T SEE…Using scientific instruments to measure/ gather information for making scientific comparisons.

TERMS

Technology: Tools/ Crafts that people use

Comparison: the act or process of examining two or more

people or things in order to discover similarities and differences between them

Invention: new idea, device, or process

STANDARD INDICATOR >4.1.5

Demonstrate how measuring instruments, such as microscopes, telescopes, and cameras, can be used to gather accurate information for making scientific comparisons of objects and events. Note that measuring instruments, such as rulers, can also be used for designing and constructing things that will work properly.

WHAT THIS IS USED FOR…

• Is an instrument to

see objects too

small for the naked

eye.

• It is used to look

and observe things

such as cells of

various things.

The Microscope!

You might see

a lot of my

within your

science labs.

Especially in

Biology.

Page 5: I see something you don’t see

WHAT IS IT USED FOR?

• It is used to look at really small things.

• As the title of the instrument states, it magnifies things because of the shape of the glass within the instrument.

• Almost like a microscope only not as powerful.

The Magnifying Glass

A man named Sherlock

Holmes used

this a lot to help him

solve his mysteries.

WHO WAS THIS INVENTED BY AGAIN?

You might think of a

man that was named

Galileo, but it is

actually traced all of

the way back before

him. It was invented

in the Netherlands

around the 17th

century.

It is an instrument

designed for the

observation of objects

that are far away.

The Telescope

Think of the Stars and Planets

when you see on of

these?

THIS ISN’T THE SAME THING THAT MIGHT SIT ON YOUR BATHROOM FLOOR…

• a measuring instrument for determining the weight.

•In order to find the correct weight you might place an actually weight on one side and then the item being weighted on the other.

•This scale is based on balance. A Weight Scale

You might have seen me in a kitchen or

@ the supermarket.

THIS CAN BE USED FOR MANY THINGS IN SCIENCE…

•a device that records images, either as a still photograph or as moving images known as videos or movies.

•This can be used to observe and compare animals, rocks, people, trees, almost anything in nature. Even cars and houses.

The Camera

Ahhh, something a little bit more familiar.

Page 9: I see something you don’t see

ACTIVITY

Take the nature pictures that are in the box and look at them carefully.

What do you see? Think in detail.

What colors do you see? How big do each of the objects appear to be? What assumptions could you make from these

pictures?

Page 10: I see something you don’t see

ACTIVITY CONT…

Now look @ the scientific instrument pictures.

Decide which instrument / instruments would be most useful to observe and compare each of the nature pictures.

You can go as far as thinking about the objects within the pictures. Ex. What would you use to look @ the planets? Ex. What would you use to see those people in

the mountain ruins from far away?

Page 11: I see something you don’t see

ACTIVITY CONT…Have some fun with it.Make up your own questions and

let me know the answers. If it is a question that you do not

know the answer to, write it down. I might be able to answer it for you.

FINALLY

Fill out the small sheet that I

put together.

If you need help, just let me

know.
