The event was hosted by the Emn-ambithi/Ladysmith municipal gender office under Operation Sukuma Sak-he in partnership with Qhakaza Mbokodo research council. The men’s dialogue as it is well known was this year to certify that men of Emnambithi/Ladysmith led by the Mayor are strongly against the rape and abuse of women and chil-dren. As the theme was “no woman will be raped in my name”. Mayor Cllr MV Madlala addressed those at the event and told them that men should play a pivotal role in teaching boys to become real men who don’t violate women. He said that it pleased him very much to see such events where men

gather and stand together in the fight of violence towards women. Mayor Madlala also reiterated the role of drugs and alcohol in some of the crimes directed to women and children. “As men who protect women, we must work together with the SAPS and have lots of men’s dialogue programmes where not only do we discuss issues about ourselves, but also issues on how we can work together to make this country a bet-ter one”, said the Mayor. One of the speakers Dr Nkosi elabo-rated how the body of a man acts and reacts to certain situations and how men get affected by various issues but fail to talk about them. After the dialogue the men, support-ed by women, took to the streets of Ladysmith, to the taxi ranks and all the places where many men usually gather. They also distributed pamphlets, condoms, information brochures to the community as they continued to emphasise that the abuse of women and children will not be tolerated.

There is a continuous need for suitably qualified artisans to sustain industries and support economic growth within South Africa. It is esti-mated that by 2030 the coun-try should be producing 30 000 qualified artisans per year. At present the country is producing on average 13 000 qualified artisans per year and so the number has to more than double in the next seventeen years leading up to 2030.

As a contribution to this national challenge, the KZN –Department Of Economic Development and Tourism (Uthukela District Office) in collaboration with different stakeholders has trained more than 50 SMMES on artisans’ skills. This is a sharp response from the Emnambithi/Ladysmith Mayor’s Clarion Call to position the Emnambithi/Ladysmith Municipality as the source of providing scarce and critical skills.

The programme was categorized into five (5) areas, which were motor mechanics, welding, carpentry, plumbing and bricklaying. The Business Management Course was added to sharpen their business skills in order to manage and sustain their business growth well.

The Department of Higher Education has declared 2014 – 2024 as the “Decade of Artisans”. Chief whip councillor Themba Ngubane

was at the event on behalf of the Emnambithi/Ladysmith Mayor Cllr M.V. Madlala along with Escourt Mayor Cllr Bongani Dlamini were at the town hall on 21 November to officially present the certificate to the successful entrepreneurs.
