I. Review A. Jehoiakim became king in 608 B. C. II Kings 23:34II Kings 23:34 And Pharaohnechoh made Eliakim the son of Josiah king in the room of Josiah his father, and turned his name to Jehoiakim, and took Jehoahaz away: and he came to Egypt, and died there.  B. Daniel taken captive 606 B.C. Daniel 1:1-Daniel 1:1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it.  C. King Nebuchadnezzar I died 604 B.C. 1. Daniel eating vegetables 606-604 B.C. 2. Daniel had purposed in his heart.

Jehoiakim became servant to Nebuchadnezzar 606 B.C. when Daniel was taken captive and he rebelled against Nebuchadnezzar after 3 years. 603 B.C. II Kings 24:1II Kings 24:1 In his days Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up, and Jehoiakim became his servant three years: then he turned and rebelled against him.

1. II Kings 24:1 After 3 years Did King Jehoiakim’s rebellion take place after Daniel was appointed ruler over the whole providence of Babylon? Daniel 2:48?II Kings 24:1 In his days Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up, and Jehoiakim became his servant three years: then he turned and rebelled against him. Daniel 2:48 Then the king made Daniel a great man, and gave him many great gifts, and made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon, and chief of the governors over all the wise men of Babylon. 

2. Daniel 2:1 In the second year of Nebuchadnezzar‒ 603 would be in the second year of King Nebuchadnezzar. II. This brings us to Daniel chapter 2, in 603 B.C. It will be in that year also that the King of Judea, Jehoiakim will rebel against King Nebuchadnezzar.  

A. Daniel 2:1Daniel 2:1 And in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams, wherewith his spirit was troubled, and his sleep brake from him. 

A. Daniel 2:1

1. Dreams that take away sleep given to Pharaoh King of Egypt Genesis 41:8Genesis 41:8 And it came to pass in the morning that his spirit was troubled; and he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt, and all the wise men thereof: and Pharaoh told them his dream; but there was none that could interpret them unto Pharaoh.

3. The ungodly go to the best the world has before turning to God.

Daniel 2:3, 4 Syriac tongue II Kings 18:17-36 speak Syrian so the Jews will not understand.Daniel 2:3 And the king said unto them, I have dreamed a dream, and my spirit was troubled to know the dream.4 Then spake the Chaldeans to the king in Syriack, O king, live for ever: tell thy servants the dream, and we will shew the interpretation. II Kings 18:17 And the king of Assyria sent Tartan and Rabsaris and Rabshakeh from Lachish to king Hezekiah with a great host against Jerusalem. And they went up and came to Jerusalem. And when they were come up, they came and stood by the conduit of the upper pool, which is in the highway of the fuller’s field.

18 And when they had called to the king, there came out to them Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, which was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder.19 And Rabshakeh said unto them, Speak ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest?20 Thou sayest, (but they are but vain words,) I have counsel and strength for the war. Now on whom dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?21 Now, behold, thou trustest upon the staff of this bruised reed, even upon Egypt, on which if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt unto all that trust on him.

22 But if ye say unto me, We trust in the LORD our God: is not that he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and hath said to Judah and Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem?23 Now therefore, I pray thee, give pledges to my lord the king of Assyria, and I will deliver thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.24 How then wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master’s servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?25 Am I now come up without the LORD against this place to destroy it? The LORD said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.

26 Then said Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and Shebna, and Joah, unto Rabshakeh, Speak, I pray thee, to thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and talk not with us in the Jews’ language in the ears of the people that are on the wall.27 But Rabshakeh said unto them, Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men which sit on the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you?28 Then Rabshakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and spake, saying, Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria:

29 Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you out of his hand:30 Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us, and this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.31 Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me, and then eat ye every man of his own vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his cistern:

32 Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of oil olive and of honey, that ye may live, and not die: and hearken not unto Hezekiah, when he persuadeth you, saying, The LORD will deliver us.33 Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered at all his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?34 Where are the gods of Hamath, and of Arpad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah? have they delivered Samaria out of mine hand?35 Who are they among all the gods of the countries, that have delivered their country out of mine hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of mine hand?

36 But the people held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king’s commandment was, saying, Answer him not.

Chaldean tongue Daniel 1:4Daniel 1:4 Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king’s palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.

b. Keeping the children of Judea out of the discussion ‒Why? Daniel 1:20Daniel 1:20 And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.  c. These wanted to know the dream. 5. Daniel 2:5-6 The king’s unreasonable request with men this is impossible but with God? ____________ Matthew 19:26, Mark 10:27, Luke 18:27

Matthew 19:26 But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible. Mark 10:27 And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible. Luke 18:27 And he said, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.  6. Chaldean sorcerers ask again. Daniel 2:7

7. Daniel 2:8 Chaldeans are trying to gain some time because of verse 5  8. Daniel 2:9 They claim to be magicians, astrologers and sorcerers ‒ men consented with the gods.  9. Daniel 2:10 There is not a man…!a. Chaldeans Daniel 5:7-8Daniel 5:7 The king cried aloud to bring in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. And the king spake, and said to the wise men of Babylon, Whosoever shall read this writing, and shew me the interpretation thereof, shall be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.8 Then came in all the king’s wise men: but they could not read the writing, nor make known to the king the interpretation thereof.

b. You do not find men of God with those involved with false religion. c. Daniel 3:8-12 They are always after a man of God.Daniel 3:8 Wherefore at that time certain Chaldeans came near, and accused the Jews.9 They spake and said to the king Nebuchadnezzar, O king, live for ever.10 Thou, O king, hast made a decree, that every man that shall hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of musick, shall fall down and worship the golden image:

11 And whoso falleth not down and worshippeth, that he should be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace.12 There are certain Jews whom thou hast set over the affairs of the province of Babylon, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego; these men, O king, have not regarded thee: they serve not thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.

d. Daniel 4:7-8Daniel 4:7 Then came in the magicians, the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers: and I told the dream before them; but they did not make known unto me the interpretation thereof.8 But at the last Daniel came in before me, whose name was Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods: and before him I told the dream, saying,

10. Daniel 2:11 “There is not a god that dwelleth with flesh” a. You are asking something that our god cannot do. b. A God that can do this does not dwell with men. 11. Daniel 2:12-13 King Nebuchadnezzar is furious. a. Commands Daniel 2:5 be carried out. b. Daniel, Azariah, Mishael, Hananiah who were 10 times better when examined by King Nebuchadnezzar are not consulted! 12. Daniel 2:14-15 Daniel answers with “Arioch name meaning lion-like”   a. Counsel

b. Wisdom c. Why is the decree so hasty from the king? 13. Daniel 2:16 a.Why is Daniel granted time when the astrologers, magicians and sorcerers were not? ___________________________________________ 1.) Because they said it was impossible. 2.) Daniel said it was possible. 3.) Daniel was given time and then he was to report back.

b. Keep in mind Daniel 1:19, 20 There was something obviously different about Daniel, Hananiah, Meschael and Azariah.Daniel 1:19 And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.20 And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.  14. Daniel 2:16-18

a. Did he ask all the “children of the captivity” to pray with him? b. Did he ask the astrologers, magicians and sorcerers to pray with him? c. Daniel and his friends ask for the mercies of the God, that they should not perish… 15. Daniel 2:19-23 The secret revealed and God Almighty praised. Why? Daniel 1:8 a. Blessed be the name of God forever and ever. Daniel 1:8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

b. Wisdom is God’s ‒ Proverbs 1:7, Proverbs 9:10Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction. Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. c. Might is God’s ‒ Zechariah 4:6Zechariah 4:6 Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.

d. Daniel 2:21 e. Daniel 2:22 f. Daniel 2:23 The king’s matter ‒ Daniel 2:30 “That thou mightiest know the throughts of thy heart.” 1.) Chapter 3 makes an image of himself

2.) Chapter 4:37 After eating grass like an ox Nebuchadnezzar said “Those that walk in pride he is able to abase.”Daniel 4:37 Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven, all whose works are truth, and his ways judgment: and those that walk in pride he is able to abase.

16. Daniel 2:24-26 Before the king a. Daniel 2:24-26  1.) Of the captives of Judah

2.) Daniel ‒Belteshazzar b. Daniel 2:26 “Art thou able to make known unto me the dream which I have seen, and the

interpretation thereof?” 17. Daniel answers Daniel 2:27-30  a. Brings into question the gods of the wise men, astrologers, magicians and soothsayers. b. Daniel 2:28 There is a God! (who knows all the future)

c. “Latter” days God knows the end of everything. d. Daniel 2:29  e. Daniel 2:30

1.) Daniel revealing he has no power or gift, but it is God alone that knows and reveals.

2.) “I have more than any living” Daniel is no different than us.

3.) Two reasons to make it known. a.) The king would know his heart.

Jeremiah 17:9

b.) “For their sake that make known the interpretation…”

(1.) This is for all people of all nations for all times.
