PAGE 2 INSOL Europe’s Annual Insolvency Congress 22-25 September 2011 –Venice

A message of welcome from thePresident of INSOL EuropeVenice, Queen of the Adriatic and the City of Masks, is the setting for our2011 Annual Congress.A city of 117 islands in a beautiful saltwaterlagoon, whose historic canals are plied by gondolas and vaporettos, it wasa maritime and commercial powerhouse in the Middle Ages and became agreat cultural centre during the Renaissance, leaving a multitude ofattractions for the 21st century visitor to enjoy. Early autumn is the idealtime to be in Venice – the heat and crowds of the summer are gone, butthere is still warmth in the sun!

Our technical committee is chaired this year by Dr Sandra Frisby and Francesco P. RuggeriLaderchi. The programme summary is shown on the following pages and I know that thecommittee will achieve its objective of delivering the best possible presentations from greatspeakers on a variety of topics of interest. Many of INSOL Europe's special interest groups, from the Academic Forum to the Judicial Wing and the Lenders' Group to the TurnaroundWing, will be meeting during the Congress and there will also be an array of breakoutsessions to ensure that the professional development on offer caters for all delegates.

To my mind one of the most important features of our Annual Congress is the opportunityto establish and build relationships with each other. We are anticipating more delegates -and accompanying persons – than ever this year and our congress team will, as always, ensure that opportunities and facilities for networking are plentiful. I encourage you to usethem! The highlight of the social events will be our gala dinner on the Saturday evening, which will seem like an elaborate masked ball in typical Venetian carnival style, with dancingand entertainment to captivate the audience.

We are particularly grateful to the Consiglio Nazionale dei Dottori Commercialisti e degli EspertiContabili for its support for this year's congress and look forward to seeing many new Italiandelegates. Of course, we are also very grateful to our sponsors, and especially our main sponsor,Salans, for their financial contributions.

I have said before that I want to encourage communication within as well as to and from therestructuring and insolvency community in Europe. I firmly believe that our Venice Congresswill encourage and facilitate that communication. Do please come and enjoy the splendoursthat INSOL Europe's Annual Congress has to offer in the wonderful city of Venice from22 - 25 September 2011.

INSOL Europe’s Annual Insolvency Congress 22-25 September 2011 –Venice PAGE 3

Venice 2011By Joint Technical ChairsSandra Frisby & Francesco P. Ruggeri Laderchi

It is never plain sailing when dealing with restructuringand insolvency. But the perfect storm seems to have hitthe economy and the insolvency profession over the lastthree years. From the well-respected automotive company,to the billion-euro London-based financial institution, fromthe small, closely held corporate client to large sovereignentities, all had to navigate through difficulties which wereunthinkable in the pre-Lehman era.

New opportunities, challenges, fields of law andexperiences emerged from those choppy waters forinsolvency professionals across Europe.

How is it possible to deal with very complex financialproducts and multinational groups with often outdatednational Insolvency Law instruments? We all had to goback to basics, be practical in new ways, be original inour insolvency profession within the limits offered bythe laws and stakeholders.

The time has come to take stock of those developmentsand look at the new landscape, exchange experience andhear from those who found new routes throughunchartered waters.

What better place to do this than the fairy tale city ofVenice. A former world financial centre and proud capitalof the Serenissima Repubblica, a trading empire bridgingthe east and the west and in its centuries long decadencea capital of the arts and culture.

We do hope to meet you all at the end of September 2011and that you will enthusiastically join us discussing thebrave new world of insolvency and restructuring.

Next to the basilicayou can admire the “Palazzo Ducale” also known as theDoge’s Palace. It was given this name as early as the 9thcentury when the first supreme head of the Venetian statetook up residence there. It is a Byzantine structure erectedover pre-existing roman walls.
