Message to the People...

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is celebrating its centennial this year--that’s right, 100 years sense this organization was established and its members begin taking the world by storm, addressing many of the issues effecting society.

In commemoration of this historic moment, the Centennial TORCH has already begun its journey across the country with stops in 22 cities.

February 23, 2013 is the date for its appearance in Dallas, Texas and members of the public service organization are anxiously looking forward to the occasion, says Bobbye Sanders, president of the Dallas Alumnae Chapter, the coordinating chapter of the Delta Centennial TORCH celebration. “This is an exciting year as we celebrate our centennial,” said Ms. Sanders. “We are honored that Dallas was chosen as one of the stops for the TORCH.”

This major initiative of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is headed by a four-member national committee that includes two local members: Carmen McClendon serves as National Centennial TORCH Committee Chair and Jennifer Stimpson is the TORCH Coordinator.

There are several activities throughout the year celebrating the founding of Delta Sigma Theta. The sorority kicked off the year as the first African American organization to have a float in the Rose Bowl Parade, said Ms. Sanders.

The organization’s leadership has appeared on numerous television and radio program and media coverage has been extensive about this milestone in the history of the organization founded on Howard University by 22 college scholars.

Delta Sigma Theta is no stranger to the Metroplex or the world. There are 16 chapters and thousands of members in this area. The work of these members has been extensive as they have worked to better conditions in every walk of life. Whether they are tutoring, visiting the elderly, funding scholarships, volunteering at shelters, developing programs for youth, conducting health fairs and more.

I’m calling all Deltas to the floor. Delta Sigma Theta has done so much for so many and if every living Delta is reclaimed, and committed to the work of this great organization...we could really change this world!

In the mean time, thanks to those active Deltas who continue to make a difference in the name of the 22 women who took that first step in 1913.

AIRMEN celebrate Black History Month

Every February, Black History Month evokes a few iconic names in aviation, most notably the Tuskegee Airmen of World War II fame and Bessie Coleman, the first black woman pilot.

This year, the Frontiers of Flight Museum, the Texas Eagles for Aviation and Claude R. Platte DFW Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen have partnered to bring a special Black History celebration to the North Texas community that highlights the achievements of these and other extraordinary African Americans aviation heroes past and present.

This two-day event will be held at the Frontiers of Flight Museum, 6911 Lemmon Ave., and begin with engaging educational activities for more than 300 area middle school students on Friday, Feb. 22. Following on Saturday, Feb. 23 from 2:00-3:30 p.m. museum guests will enjoy a

riveting presentation on the “State of Aviation” featuring a panel of distinguished African American aviators, historians and aviation administrators. This event is open to the general public with paid admission to the museum. Visit: www.flightmuseum.com.

The Black History Month Celebration at the Frontiers of Flight Museum will feature pioneers, modern aviators and space age pilots. Special guests and presenters include documented Tuskegee Airmen, an artist who paints African American aviators, and a pilot trained by Chief Alfred Anderson, widely considered to be the Father of Black Aviation. The event will also include an array of military and corporate, aviation pilots, as well as representatives from the Aerospace industry.

Following Saturday’s panel discussion on Feb. 23, attendees may also participate in a special drawing for a $250 certificate for a Discovery Flight and Discovery Briefing. The raffle prize will be presented by Major Alejandro House, a distinguished Marine pilot who now serves as a corporate pilot for Bell Helicopter and flies the world’s fastest corporate jet – the Cessna Citation.

OPEN LETTER TO AMERICA'S BLACK YOUTH: "BRAINS BEFORE BULLETS,

THINK IT OUT, DON'T SHOOT IT

OUT!"

-- Several years ago, I found myself at a crossroads in my life. If not for a helping hand at just the right time, I might not be here to offer these words of advice and encouragement. I definitely fit the description of an "at risk" youngster.

I was an inner-city tough guy. That was my life, my culture. It defined me. I wasn't worried about my future. Future? Ha! My future was today, tonight. Tomorrow was never a sure thing.

So what happened? How did I escape? Why am I now preaching against the life that once looked so "cool"? For this column, let's just say a very special teacher saw something in me that I didn't even see. He taught me the game of chess and with that simple act, he saved my life. I owe him so much and one way I'm paying him back is by living every day to save other

young people who are in trouble or potentially stand to make poor decisions.

We are surrounded by so much pain and heartache. You can't turn on the news without being faced with a litany of domestic violence, carjacking, robberies, and kidnappings. Violence is something that has always plagued this world. It is so important to learn that hostility gains you nothing in life. Peaceful compromises are the way to solve your dilemmas. Why is the world so angry? Perhaps we will never know the answer to that.

Using the game of chess, I founded an organization several years ago based upon a simple premise: Be someone, not something. Your actions speak louder than your words, and that is often forgotten. There is no reason in this world why two people cannot sit down with a game of chess or something similar and use their mind power to put hostility and sore feelings behind them. Use creativity and your mind in a unique way to solve your differences. Violence gets you nowhere but behind bars.

Taking someone else's life is one of the most unholy sins a person can commit. Consider what that family has to go through and what yours will go through knowing that you did this. Did you see the recent story in Chicago? A beautiful young lady who had recently performed at President Obama's inauguration in Washington was shot and killed by gang members firing weapons indiscriminately. Think of the pain and heartbreak.

Remember this simple statement, "Brains before bullets, think it out, don't shoot it out!" I teach this and my students are hearing me but I need to reach more young people than those I'm able to meet in my classes.

Everyday lives are taken for no reason at all or for something menial. No matter what it is, a gun is never the answer to solving your problems.

I have dedicated my life to teaching young people that they can succeed. They can make the right choices that will lead them places they have only dreamed of going if someone can reach them. I believe God gave me that ability and capability.

This is my message to young people: Learn how to take charge of your life. I want to help you do that. I have guided and mentored many young people who others have given up on. I offer a calm voice and a steady hand that has weathered numerous tests.

I believe every child has the potential to succeed. That's what guides my presentations and my classes. Take my instruction, and use it constructively in your everyday life to become that upstanding citizen that you desire to be. Be a success, not a casualty. You can be productive in life, you can go places, and you do have support to help you get there.

So many young people forget that life is beautiful, and if your chance to take advantage of all it has to offer is taken away either by your own hand or another's; you will live with many regrets. Let's have more successes and challenge your mind, put the guns away!

Orrin "Checkmate" Hudson was an at-risk young person growing up in Birmingham, AL, when a teacher taught him the game of chess demonstrating to him that for every move - either on the game board or in the game of life - there are consequences. It changed his life. He went on to become an Alabama State Trooper and later founded Be Someone, Inc., an organization devoted to teaching young people there are consequences for their actions and that they can choose to succeed in life. He not only teaches classes, but delivers motivational speeches around the country.

Recently an editorial appeared in a local daily newspaper that misrepresented my role in a proposed development project in South Dallas. I want to share with you my response to the editorial. My constituents know my record and understand my commitment to serve them.

*************Your editorial entitled “Make the Dirt Fly,”

written on February 14th, is more fiction than reality. It is layered with numerous untruths and omits the role that my office has played to bring sustainable projects to neighborhoods located near the Veterans Administration Hospital in South Dallas.

The basis of the editorial rests upon the testimony of a single developer whose actions are uncertain, while others question whether he is fully committed to the development of Veterans Place.

As recently as last month, I met with the developer concerning the project. On at least two occasions, I have met with his consultant, and I have spent time with Dallas City Hall officials to see how this project could become a reality.

The editorial quotes the developer as saying that federal approval was absent. The developer has asked the federal government to give him a guarantee that it would lease space from him if the project were completed. The problem is a developer who wants a commitment from the Veterans Administration that is unlawful.

The editorial also unjustly assigns blame to certain groups for delays on the project. The City of Dallas has already set aside $4.4 million for this project. The VA had the land appraised by a third party, and offered to purchase the land from the developer. The developer initially had the land appraised at approximately $15 million. When that figure was disputed, he agreed to a $5.2 million appraisal by an independent appraiser. The developer ultimately agreed to the terms of a contract to sell the property to the Veterans Administration. The developer then rescinded the deal at the last minute in hopes of retaining some ownership of the property.

The real obstruction to progress is not a lack of communication within a public-private partnership, but one of securing proportionate funding from private sources. The City of Dallas has taken legitimate steps to reasonably plan and fund the Veterans Place project. Unfortunately, the developer has relied overwhelmingly on public funds to move this project forward. The “pre-development costs” that he has offered would be a

SBA names Dallas/Ft. Worth District Public Information Officer

The U. S. Small Business Administration’s Dallas/Fort Worth (D/FW) District Office has named Ahmad Goree as its public information officer (PIO).

In his new role as PIO, Goree will work closely with media outlets on promoting SBA services throughout 72 counties.

“Ahmad has the energy and experience to work with local media to effectively promote SBA’s programs and resources” said D/FW district director Herbert Austin.

In addition to his role as PIO, Goree is an economic development specialist, where he works on building and maintaining collaborative partnerships with small business stakeholders such as economic development practitioners, chambers of commerce, business associations, educational institutions and civic/community organizations.

Prior to SBA, Goree worked as a Senior Legislative Aide for Business and Commerce in the Office of State Senator Royce West. Goree holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Jarvis Christian College and a master‘s in political science from Dallas Baptist University. Goree has worked in the D/FW District Office since June of 2010.

In a Rage, My 15-Year- Old Daughter Kicked Me!

Dear Gwendolyn:Fifteen years ago I had a precious little girl. At that time I was single and could not keep her. One night I left with my boyfriend (not her father) and never returned. Six months ago I decided to find my child. I went back to my hometown and discovered that my mother was deceased, but that my grandmother (now in her 80s) was keeping my daughter. After going to grandma’s house, I immediately proceeded to tell her who I was. She did not recognize me. I guess I have changed so much in 13 years – living on the street and all other disasters.My grandmother was hesitant at first, but told me when my daughter came home from school, the three of us would have a talk. I asked her could I come in. She replied, “No, and don’t even sit on the porch or wait in my yard.”Gwendolyn, this was too cold. Finally, my daughter came home and before [I] could explain to her any details of my absence, my daughter got up and kicked me in the face. They have turned her against me. How can I win her love and bond?

to bond with her is something that may never happen. Your daughter was most wrong to try and bring physical harm to you. Your mother and/or grandmother may not have taught your daughter to love you even in your absence. Why 15 years? This business of acting like you cannot survive is nonsense. I know a lot of readers will disagree with me, but so what? Peoples enters race to lead

decided that Tarrant County needs to join the only other “blue” county in the state of Texas -- Dallas County.

Ms. Peoples recently announced that she is a candidate for chair of the Tarrant County Democratic Party.

Born a USO/Military “brat” in Alexandria, Louisiana; Ms. Peoples spent her early years traveling. The family lived in Louisiana, Texas, and Pennsylvania, before settling in Odessa, Texas where she graduated from High school and then attended Texas Woman’s University, where she received a BS in Speech (1973) and later an MBA (2007)

Ms. Peoples joined AT&T in 1977 and remained there until her retirement in 2012. During her tenure, she worked in both California and Texas in both the business and consumer market groups where she held many positions -- retiring as a vice president.

Upon her retirement she founded the Peoples Group LLC which focuses on community issues.

Deborah is a life-long Democrat who “supported and worked for many great Democrats and raised and contributed thousands of Democratic dollars.”

In 1996 her job took her from Fort Worth but she always considered it home and when she retired in 2012 she immediately moved back to East Fort Worth.

Ms. Peoples is devoted to community and is a member of many advocacy organizations, among them the Black Women Lawyers of Tarrant County, The North Texas Chapter of The United Negro College Fund, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and the board of Fort Worth Sister Cities.

Black History in Bellflower, Ca

Dr. Gloria Willingham is the first African American woman to run for Bellflower City Council. If elected Willingham will become the first African-American to serve on the council. She would also be the only woman on the council.

While this is Willingham's first run for a political office, she is no stranger to public service. She brings solid leadership experience gained from her years as military officer (Lt. Colonel, US Army Retired) among other roles. The SEIU (Service Employees international Union), and the LA County Democratic Party, and a host of others have endorsed her. Her background is amazing according to one source.

She served as the Chief, Nursing Education and Research at the VA Healthcare System in Long Beach,CA for 10 years, and served veterans in other VA institutions for ten years before that. She has been responsible for the oversight of multi-million dollar budgets while serving as a university senior Vice-president. She has worked on policy development at multiple levels. She has served on a

variety of boards, and launched non-profit organizations reaching out to underrepresented communities.

Willingham earned a PhD in Education/Administration from Claremont Graduate University, a Master's degree in Nursing Science from University of Arkansas Medical Science Campus, and a BSN degree from Regents College. She is no stranger to hard work and long hours having raised three children as a single divorced parent while working full time and earning three college degrees. She is married to Ben Toure, CEO of AframGlobal Organization Inc, a nonprofit human rights organization.

Aromatherapy In Today’s MarketAromatherapy was first popularized in the form of lifestyle products such as candles for ambience; fragranced bath salts to relax and unwind; and room deodorizers to replace unwanted odors. Today, even household products such as fabric softener, and dish detergent are marketed with an "aromatherapy" component. This trend of marketing is a direct result of the increased level of interest in natural, holistic modalities.

In recent years, the word "aromatherapy" has been abused and misused creating confusion among the general public. The market is becoming saturated with aromatic oils, aromatic products, poor-quality essential oils and adulterated mixtures without botanical or biochemical definition. Pure essential oils are very complex substances that contain 300 to 500 different botanical chemical constituents each of which has its own physical and chemical characteristics. Therapeutic aromatherapy can be accomplished only through the use of pure essential oils.

Therapeutic aromatherapy is categorized in the personal healthcare industry. Cosmeceuticals, a relatively new segment of the industry straddles the cosmetic and medical sectors, and it is the fastest growing category in the industry. There are projections that future overall growth of the cosmeceutical category to be in excess of 20% per year.

A U.S. government survey reveals that a significant portion of Americans use traditional medical practices to supplement or replace Western high technology medicine and drugs. Although the United States leads the world in medical technology, government health officials find that many Americans are no strangers to traditional medicine. According to a survey of 31,000, 36% use herbal remedies, acupuncture, aromatherapy, chiropractic, yoga, massage, special diets or some combination of these. That 36% represents a very large group.

Trends show that people turn to ancient techniques to cure pain and stiffness, colds, anxiety and depression, even though there may be a drug or other sophisticated medical therapy available to deal with the problem. There is a growing dissatisfaction with science-based medicine. The public is turning to complementary and alternative medicine because it's not getting relief from conventional medicine. Many people use complementary and alternative medicine because they feel that the side effects and disadvantages to using synthetic drugs outweigh any good that may be accomplished.

As for the development of Southern Dallas and the creation of housing and retail space, I have worked closely with city officials and developers to create sustainable projects.

One that I am most proud of is Lancaster Urban Village, a mixed use project that will create housing, retails shops, office space, and recreational facilities for the residents who live where the Veterans Administration Hospital is located.

My office helped to secure federal funding for the project. We worked closely with city officials and developers, and once the development is completed it will be a vital part of Southern Dallas. So, to suggest that we have done nothing is patently false. In fact, one of the reporters from your newspaper wrote about the groundbreaking. The headline of the article read “Lancaster Urban Village offers promise for Oak Cliff corridor.”

I do not mind fair and equitable evaluation of my work. But I take offense at slanted and biased coverage that distorts reality. It is something that I will not tolerate without comment.

DENTON (UNT), Texas Dorothy M. Bland, director of the Division of Journalism of Florida A&M University’s School of Journalism & Graphic Communication, has been named the new dean of the University of North Texas Frank W. and Sue Mayborn School of Journalism <http://journalism.unt.edu/>. Her appointment will begin in June.

Bland will replace M. Jean Keller, who has served as the school’s acting dean since September 2012.

UNT Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Warren Burggren called Bland’s hiring a highly significant academic appointment for UNT in our continuing quest to be a national research university with outstanding student learning.

and staff and for the many distinguished alumni and friends of the school, all of whom will benefit not only from Dorothy Blands demonstrated leadership skills in an academic setting, but also from her extensive experience in publishing, Burggren said.

Bland directed Florida A&M University’s Division of Journalism--the first accredited journalism program at a historically African-American university for five years. Her accomplishments include leading a successful reaccreditation for the division in spring 2008 and 2012; securing an annual commitment for Scripps-Howard Foundation Internship/Scholarship Grants for two FAMU students beginning in 2011; and working with CBS News, FAMU journalism alumni and others to establish the Harold Dow Professorship<http://harolddowfoundation.com/HD_Professorship_At_FAMU.html>, named in honor of the award-winning 48 Hours correspondent who died in August 2010.

While I appreciate my FAMU experiences, leading the Mayborn School of Journalism is a wonderful opportunity, Bland said. I understand that UNT’s theme is a Green Light to Greatness, and the Mayborn School has a strong foundation plus excellent potential for more greatness. It is strategically located in the fifth largest

media market in the nation and a diverse region well positioned for future growth.

Bland praised the school’s annual Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference as a national treasure and also the school offering a full complement of student media and student-run advertising/public relations and photo/multimedia agencies.

I look forward to working with the team to increase the schools visibility in the digital age and take it to the next level. I value UNT’s four bold goals related to student success, providing a superior educational experience, developing faculty and staff and expanding partnerships, she said.

At FAMU, Bland led campaigns to raise more than $100,000 to support the National Association of Black Journalists Multimedia Short Courses from 2009 to 2012 and the Dow Jones News Fund Multimedia High School Workshops in 2010 and 2012. She was the interim advisor for both the FAMU chapter of the Association of Black Journalists, which was named Student Chapter of the Year in 2008 and was a finalist in 2009, and the FAMU chapter of Public Relations Society of America.

Bland also served FAMU as a member of the Retention Council, the Web Site Steering Committee and

the Search Committee for the Assistant Vice President for Instructional Technology, and was the subcommittee chair of the university’s Organizational Analysis Task Force.

She has served on site teams for the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications at universities in California, Georgia, Kansas, Illinois, Louisiana, Mississippi and other states. Bland was also a juror for the Pulitzer Prizes and a guest lecturer at the Pointer Institute, Kuwait University and other institutions.

Before coming to FAMU, Bland worked in various newspaper positions for 25 years. She was a reporter and editor at USA Today. She served as president and publisher of both the Chillicothe (Ohio) Gazette and Fort Collins (Colo.) Coloradoan and earned three Gannett Presidents Rings for outstanding performance.

Bland received her bachelors degree in journalism from Arkansas State University and her master of business administration degree in marketing from George Washington University. She was a McCormick Fellowmin the Advanced Executive Program at Northwestern University’s Media Management Center and has completed additional graduate courses at Florida State University.

According to KCBD 11, a Lubbock man is behind bars after admitting he had a sexually explicit relationship through text messages with an 11-year-old girl.

Communicate house rules. Before your child is allowed a phone, he or she should be well-aware of any pre established house rules. Discuss your expectations for mobile behavior and the consequences for failing to meet those expectations, but also discuss the potential legal and social repercussions of sending inappropriate pictures or spreading them online, whether they are of your child or not.

Be a vigilant parent. Know who your child is talking to and who is trying to talk to them. The more information you have about their interactions on their phone, the better equipped you will be to interfere if anything dangerous should happen. Devaluation in African American Communities --

The role of a Real Estate Appraiser is to provide an objective, impartial and unbiased opinion of the value of real property.

An appraisal, however, lacks credibility when the Appraiser has no competency in terms of familiarity with the market in which the property is located. A good understanding of appraisal methodology and numerology is not a substitute for an Appraisers working knowledge of the dynamics of a specific neighborhood. Todays urban neighborhoods can encompass as little as a few blocks and most homeowners are more knowledgeable of their neighborhoods boundaries than are some Appraisers.

It is not uncommon for two certified Appraisers to arrive at widely varying conclusions of value for the same property as of the same date.

Two major factors in the discrepancies between their opinions of value are often the level of their familiarity with the neighborhood and their subjective interpretation of its quality in terms of its schools, churches, homes, businesses, transportation access and other significant factors.

A common result of an Appraisers lack of familiarity with a propertys neighborhood is a devaluation of the property. Because suburban markets often set the standards for what constitutes a good neighborhood, there is a real possibility that an Appraiser will misinterpret the quality of a culturally diverse urban African American neighborhood.

It can take as few as three homes in a neighborhood that have been appraised and purchased at low prices to create a market that devalues other properties in the area. Other Appraisers working in the same neighborhood use the sales of the lower valued homes as comparables, which justifies a continuation of lower property values in that area. Banks often interpret this as evidence of a declining neighborhood and become reluctant to approve loans in the area.

Real Estate Appraisers in general are an aging population, according to the Appraisal Institute, the nations

largest professional association of Real Estate Appraisers. More than half of the Appraisers in the U.S. are 51-65 years of age and there is general agreement within the industry that there is an imminent overall Appraiser shortage.

One can be certain that although the number of African Americans among this aging population is very small, the number of those who are close to obtaining the necessary education and experience to replace them is even smaller.

This is due primarily to the difficulty in obtaining the required experience, which can only be provided by working as a trainee under a State Certified Appraiser. A shortage of Black Real Estate Appraisers has the potential to perpetuate property devaluation in African American communities throughout the United States.

Although many State Certified Appraisers have been reluctant in the past to take on trainees, African American trainees in particular have found it difficult to locate a mentor, however, it appears that opportunities may be improving.

Some of the reasons for these indications of improvement are that there are Appraisers who have no desire to accept appraisal assignments in African American neighborhoods,

while others refuse assignments because they lack familiarity with these culturally diverse urban communities. The benefit of taking on African American trainees is that their

supervisory Appraisers will be able to expand their offices earning potential ($300-$500 per single family appraisal) by accepting a broader base of appraisal orders through partnership with a broader base of appraisers.

Mentoring opportunities for African American trainees would significantly increase as well if the governing body for Appraisers (The Appraisal Subcommittee (ASC), lenders and appraisal management companies (who generate most of the appraisal orders due to the DoddFrank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, which was signed into federal law by President Obama on July 21, 2010) would work together to implement and enforce stronger regulations.

These new regulations could insure that Appraisers adhere to a principle of geographical competency and have a verifiable working knowledge of the neighborhoods in which they appraise.

Currently, Appraisers can provide appraisal management companies with a list of areas that they cover without adequate oversight and verification. This practice is conducive to a focus on the quantity of appraisal assignments instead of their quality and has the potential to negatively impact property values in all communities across the United States.

A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD

So let’s see…first there was DIE HARD (1988), then DIE HARD 2 (1990), DIE HARD: WITH A VENGEANCE (1995), LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD (2007) and now this — A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD. With the exception of the STAR WARS and James Bond franchises, I am usually less than thrilled about the fifth sequel of ANY movie (think ROCKY V).

However, I was pleasantly surprised that I actually enjoyed A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD. In this latest release by 20th Century Fox, Bruce Willis reprises his role as John McClane, the legendary, hot shot New York cop in the fifth

installment of the DIE HARD franchise.

Written by Skip Woods and Roderick Thorp, and directed by John Moore, in A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD, John McClane travels to Russia to help out his seemingly wayward, all grown up son, Jack (Jai Courtney), only to discover Jack is actually a highly-trained CIA operative who has been working undercover on a mission to thwart a nuclear weapons heist at Chernobyl.

In his typical “yippee-ki-yay” fashion, it takes very little time once his international flight lands in Moscow for the senior McClane, an undeniable annihilation magnet, to find himself embroiled in a jaw-dropping, high-speed car chase, a hail of gunfire and oh, a little matter of blowing a two-year operation that could threaten national security!

A couple dozen dead bodies and smashed vehicles later, Jack explains to John the mission he’s been on to protect Komarov

(Sebastian Koch), a Russian government informant who holds valuable information on a top secret file about nuclear weapons of mass destruction.

Now that their cover is literally blown to shreds, John teams up with Jack to protect Komarov from the countless attempts to permanently silence the whistleblower by Komarov’s former partner, Chagarin (Sergei Kolesnikov) and his homicidal mob.

When John McClane initially crosses paths with Jack in Moscow, it is apparent that any semblance of a normal father/son relationship is pretty much non-existent. Jack is completely disconnected to and has no respect for John. Even calls him “John” instead of “Dad.”

Most likely a result of John working all the time trying to climb the ranks in the force to provide for his family when Jack was a young boy.

The downside…he was too busy for fatherhood. Jack harbors ill feelings toward his father for not being there for him. The light bulb doesn’t come on in John’s head until he realizes why Jack is so bitter.

Interestingly enough, you know there is a glimmer of hope between the McClane men evident by the simple fact that Jack chose to follow his father’s footsteps right into a law enforcement career.

Chip on his well-defined shoulder or not, deep down inside, it’s clear to viewers that underneath the layers of resentment and rebellion, Jack really loves and admires his father.

Overall, considering my expectations were somewhat low prior to seeing it, I was pleasantly

surprised by this movie. It was better than I expected and I thoroughly enjoyed the action scenes.

Both the main plot and subplot are well written and organically intertwined.

On the surface it might seem like a sappy drama about the love of family and an adrenaline-pumping action movie wouldn’t go together, however, director John Moore does a fantastic job marrying the two genres into one on screen.

Not to mention the acting chemistry between rising Aussie star, Jai Courtney (from STARZ original series, Spartacus: Blood and Sand and recent feature film, JACK REACHER) and Bruce Willis.

Their characters are believable, they do an above-average job of playing off one another and of course, Willis’ one-liners are priceless.

As we observe the 25th anniversary of the first DIE HARD film, Bruce Willis can pat himself on the back for a successful franchise comeback with A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD.

Rated R for violence and language, the action/adventure sequel has a running time of one hour and 37 minutes. It opens in theaters and IMAX nationwide on February 14, 2013.

February is American Heart Month, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has a tool to help you achieve a heart-healthy lifestyle. It's called the Nutrition Facts Label, and it can be found on all packaged foods and beverages.

Now in its twentieth year, the Nutrition Facts Label helps you track the various nutrients you are getting from the foods you eat. In fact, it serves as your overall guide for comparing foods and making choices that can affect your long-term health!

Using Percent Daily Value (%DV) to Reduce Your Risk of Heart Disease

High blood pressure affects approximately one in three U.S. adults, or 75 million people. An additional 78 million adults suffer from slightly elevated blood pressure, which can turn into high blood pressure. High blood pressure forces the heart to work harder, and can lead to heart disease – the leading cause of death among men and women in the U.S.

Eating too much sodium, total fat (especially saturated and trans fat), and cholesterol can increase your risk of developing high blood pressure and heart disease.

You can use the Percent Daily Value (%DV) listed on the Nutrition Facts Label as a guide to determine if a

serving of food is high or low in these nutrients. As a general rule, remember that 5%DV or less of a nutrient is low, and 20%DV or more is high!

To help reduce your overall risk of high blood pressure and heart disease, be sure not to go above 100% of the Daily Value for sodium, total fat, and cholesterol each day.

The Daily Value for sodium is less than 2400 milligrams (mg) per day – or 1500 mg per day for people with high blood pressure, diabetes or kidney disease; African-Americans; and people ages 51 and older.

The Daily Value for total fat is less than 65 grams (g) per day, and the Daily Value for cholesterol is less than 300 mg per day. Remember, Daily Value recommendations for total fat and cholesterol are based on a 2000-calorie daily diet; your calorie needs may be different.

By using %DV on the Nutrition Facts Label to compare foods and the nutrients they contain, you can make heart-healthy choices at every meal.

Incorporated awarded a $20,000

Grant for STEM

Dallas, (TX) Trinity Chapter, The Links, Incorporated has announced that it has been selected for a $20,000 sub-grant from The Links Foundation, Incorporated in support of STEM education. The funds, designated to help eliminate the STEM academic achievement gap for students of color, are made possible by the $250,000 grant award The Links Foundation, Incorporated received from Chevron.

The grant provides vital funding to enhance one of the key programs of The Links, Incorporated, “STEM – ULATING Left Brain and Right Brain.” With a focus on students from 6th to 12th grades, the program aims to enhance the current curriculum, emphasizing STEM disciplines, engineering and energy industry career readiness. The Links, Incorporated expects to reach approximately 1,200 students across the country with this academic enrichment.

A key enhancement of the program is the incorporation of the NASA STEM Application Content. The content includes educational and professional development, as well as teacher training tools.

“The number for students of color in STEM related careers is significantly low due to a lack of access to sufficient STEM education,” said Eddie Bernice Johnson, chair of the National STEM Career Readiness Initiative for The Links Incorporated. “Our STEM – ULATING Left Brain and Right Brain program helps to fill that void by providing students

with opportunities to be exposed to and readied for STEM – related careers.”

Trinity Chapter President Sharyn Holley states “members of our chapter have been challenged through our program to address the lack of minority female students pursuing non-traditional careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.”

So SMAART – STEM – ULATING Left Brain and Right Brain Program is the Signature Umbrella Program of Trinity chapter. Now in its 12th year the program is designed to focus on 75 select minority students, grades 4-6.

So SMAART creates achievable dreams for girls of color through education and exposure to experiences in Science, Arts, Aviation, Reading and Technology. Each year students are selected from three designated sites located within Trinity Chapter Service areas, T. L Marsalis, Thomas Tolbert and William H. Atwell schools. The program provides hands on experiences through monthly field trips to museums and discussions with experts to assist the girls in developing a plan to achieve their dreams.

During the past 12 years Trinity Chapters’ So SMAART program has touched the lives of over 600 girls instilling positive self esteem and high aspirations in girls of color to successfully achieve limitless dreams.

The Trinity Chapter (TX) the Links Incorporate has provided beneficial and needed support to the Dallas Metroplex since 1994. The membership is comprised of forty-six (46) African Women who are employed as entrepreneurs, attorneys, physicians and educators in both public and private sectors or have retired from similar positions.

The chapter is known for its annual signature winter fundraising event “Diamonds and Sneakers Gala” which raises funds to support its umbrella So SMAART Program.

New Orleans, LA (BlackNews.com) -- New Orleans will host screenings of a new documentary film, "Kunta Kinteh Island: Coming Home Without Shackles" on February 25th and 26th. The film honors the celebrated captive African, Kunta Kinteh, who gained worldwide recognition in the 1977 ABC television series "Roots." The insightful documentary has the support of many prominent African Americans, including writer, director and actor Tyler Perry, National Urban League President and CEO Marc Morial, and many other entertainment, civic and spiritual leaders. The film is also being widely supported by academia with planned tour stops at influential institutions including Harvard University, Morehouse College, Wayne State University, Northeastern University and St. Augustine High School in New Orleans.

"I felt the heart and emotion of our rich history in this brilliantly made and powerful documentary, Kunta Kinteh Island," said Tyler Perry, owner of Tyler Perry Studios. "I am very proud of my long time friend and composer for recognizing the importance of retelling this story to this generation. I can't wait for everyone to see it!"

Produced by Elvin Ross Studios, the film was made to educate a new generation of Americans about the legendary Mandinka Warrior Kunta, and as a philanthropic effort to raise funds for the Albreda Jeffereh Primary School in Kinteh's impoverished Gambian village. The documentary traces the life of Kunta Kinteh; his journey to America; his brutal enslavement; his triumphant survival through harrowing circumstances; focuses on his lasting family legacy through profiles of his relatives in the village of Juffereh, Gambia, West Africa today; and shares his recent symbolic return to the point of his captivity - James Island in Gambia - which was formally renamed Kunta Kinteh Island on February 6, 2011.

"Kunta Kinteh Island: Coming Home Without Shackles, is a powerful intersection of African

and American history," shared Marc Morial, President and CEO of the National Urban League. "Elvin Ross, in his directorial debut, shines a light on this fascinating story that celebrates the strength and spirit of the Gambian people, and introduces this important part of history to a new generation."

Special guests are featured throughout the epic documentary including the noted actor Ben Vereen, who played the beloved character 'Chicken George' in "Roots"; singer Jermaine Jackson of music's Jackson Family; His Excellency Yahya Jammeh, President of Gambia; and members of the Kinteh family who still reside in Kunta Kinteh's tribal village in Gambia to this day.

"This documentary is a needed and significant reminder of the African Holocaust," said popular actor Ben Vereen who plays an acting part in the documentary as its narrator and who also offers interview commentary in the film.

Elvin Ross made the film as a labor of love, after years of offering varied support to the Kinteh family and uncovering a unique perspective they had of their famed ancestor, Kunta. Ross felt a deep sense of urgency to complete the dynamic picture of Kinteh that the vast majority of the world was not privy to see.

"The fact that generations of Americans have not heard this story at all or have only heard a small portion of it through the Roots series, meant there was a historical void that I felt compelled to fill in making this film," said Ross, director, executive producer and

composer of Kunta Kinteh Island. "I also wanted the Kinteh family's generosity in sharing Kunta's life with me to benefit the condition of their lives and further his legacy".The Kunta Kinteh Island educational film tour will visit multiple cities across the U.S. and

consists of three primary types of philanthropic events in each city: a red carpet screening of the documentary, an educational event, or a faith-based gathering. The

New Orleans event consists of three screenings - one at Layola University on Monday, February 25th at 7PM; one at the St, Augustine Senior High School at 10AM on the 26th; and the final screening will be a black tie, red carpet affair at the Audubon Tea Room at 7PM on Tuesday, February 26th.

The events in each city will feature celebrity and VIP guests, and offer a first opportunity to view the film and to lend financial support to the Elvin Ross Foundation. The Foundation will provide general funding, books and solar laptops to the primary school in Kunta Kinteh's village in Gambia. Select cities will also host black tie galas or thoughtful panel discussions on the documentary, to raise additional funds for the Gambian school. The Society of Toxicology will honor a number of exemplary scientists for their important achievements

during formal ceremonies at the Society’s Annual Meeting and ToxExpo, March 10-14, in San Antonio, TX.

“Bits and Bites” of spirits, sweets and savory things are the highlight of the aptly-titled annual event at El Centro

College which will be held on Sun., March 10. Area chefs will lend their hands and their talents to raise funds for ECC’s culinary arts program. Those funds will help the college expand its kitchen facilities and services so that

faculty members can inspire and train the next generation of talented food and hospitality experts in the Dallas/Fort

Worth area.

The evening’s festivities will feature foods prepared by El Centro’s former students and friends of the college; a

variety of spirits will be served as well. The cost is $45 in advance and $50 at the door; the event will be held from 4

to 7 p.m. in the Student Center on the downtown Dallas campus of El Centro College, located at 801 Main St.
