MOVIE REVIEW:
Despicable Me 2
Now we have a minion with an opinion on Despicable Me 2!
In this movie Gru is happy with his three girls, his minions, and his jelly & jam factory. All
goes well until Lucy, a spy, shows up. She is looking to find a special formula that changes all
the minions purple & evil. So they get jobs at the
mall to see if anyone there has the formula.
Gru is very suspicious about someone named El
Macho. It turns out El Macho has the formula and is
taking Gru’s minions & making them into his evil min-
ions. If you want to find out more about this hilarious
movie, you should watch Despicable Me 2!

How You Can Help Save the Artic By: Maggie T., Age 8
Use compact fluorescent bulbs -Replace light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs. By using 3 CFBs you will save 300 lbs. of CO2 & $60 a year
Fill the dishwasher -Don’t run your dishwasher unless its full. By filling completely, you can save $40 & 100 lbs. of CO2 emission a year.
Use recycled paper -By using 100% post-consumer recycled printer paper, you can save 5 lbs. of CO2 per ream of paper. Don’t forget to invest in recycled paper
towels & napkins as well.
Adjust your thermostat -If you move your thermostat down 2 degrees in the winter and up 2 degrees in the summer, you can save up to $98 and 2000 lbs. of CO2
per year.
Take shorter showers -Showers account for 2/3 of all water heating costs? Cut showers short and save $99 & 350 lbs. of CO2 per year.
Carpool when you can -Save some cash by carpooling. You can save 790 lbs. of CO2 by carpooling.
Reduce garbage -Recycle paper, plastic & glass. Buy stuff with less packaging. This can save up to 1,000 lbs. of CO2 a year.
Plant a tree -A single tree will absorb 2000 lbs. of CO2 in its lifetime.
Conserve energy -Save over 1000 lbs. of CO2 & $256 a year by keeping electronics unplugged.
Wash your clothes on cold water cycle/air dry -Because the water isn’t heated, you’ll save energy. Air-drying your clothes will save 700 lbs. of CO2 & $75 a year.
Ditch the plastic -Plastic bottles are not biodegradable and can sit in landfills for over 200 years. Use a reusable water bottle.
My New Pet Snickers By: Riley S. Age 11
Snickers is a guinea pig. He is 1. 5 years old. I adopted him from
the Dupage Animal Shelter. He loves to eat carrots. He makes
squeaks when he’s happy. Also, he is a long-haired guinea pig
and is fluffy. He is the cutest guinea pig in the world.

The Invention of Hugo Cabret By Katie B., Age 9
The Invention of Hugo Cabret is a wonderful, historical fiction book! If you like to read that genre,
like me, this book is for you! The book takes place in France where a little boy named Hugo Cabret
and his father live in the back of a clock shop. Hugo’s father owns and works in the shop. He also
works at a museum where he sets up displays & such. One day when Mr. Cabret was in the attic of
the museum, he found an automaton (automaton—robot magicians would use.) He took it home to
fix with the help of Hugo.
One night Hugo’s father was late coming home. In fact, he never came home. There had been a ter-
rible fire at the museum. The next day Hugo’s uncle came to pick him up. He took Hugo to the train
station where he worked in the clocks.
In the story Hugo meets many friends, finds out the story of the automaton and makes an old man
happy again. Hugo becomes part of a family at the end of it all!
From beginning to end, the words & pictures take you to a different place of magic, machinery & into the shoes of an orphan in
a train station clock of France! It is my favorite book & will soon be yours too!
Hey! Connor here again! I will be telling
you about the movie Jack the Giant Slayer. This
is a story like Jack and the Beanstalk, but kicked
up a notch. Jack got some magic beans & took
them home. The beans fell under the house. The
princess snuck out of the castle to visit Jack. At
that moment, the beans grew. A stalk took the
house with the princess inside to the Giant
World. Jack has to battle the Giants to save the
princess. The giant is ugly & scary, but cool. This
is a really good movie on DVD. Check it out!

“The Big Day”
by Riley S., Age 11
I have been to many different swimming pools this summer. The Bartlett Pool, the
Bloomingdale Oasis, the Bock pool in Schaumburg, Coral Cove in Carol Stream & the
Kemmerling Pool in Roselle.
The Bartlett pool is the most crowded, but worth it. It has two different water slides, a
drop slide & tube slide. It also has a zip line, a lazy river, a regular pool & a little splash
part that feels really warm. The tube slides have double tubes and 1-person
tubes.. It was my favorite pool.
The Bloomingdale Oasis is my 2nd favorite. It is less crowded & really fun. It has a
twisty water slide & a straighter water slide. It also has a drop slide, a high diving
board & a low diving board into the diving well. It has a lily pad area to hop on, a zero
depth pool area & a splash park in addition to their regular pool.
The Bock pool in Schaumburg is not that crowded, but OK. It has a small 3-foot area & a big 5-foot area and a diving well. The diving well
has a rock climbing wall, a high dive & low diving board. They also have a smaller separate pool for little kids.
The Kemmerling pool is in Roselle. It has a pool area, an area with bubbles that moms like to sit in, a current area, a kiddy slide & 2 different
kinds of fountains. In the diving well, there i s a diving board & a high-diving platform & drop slide.
At the Coral Cove in Carol Stream it has perfect crowd conditions. They had a chalk day where you could draw on the ground with chalk.
They have a water playground & splash park including a kiddie slide & fountain. They have a large walk– in pool area, a large 2-foot area & 2
tube water slides. They have a diving well with a drop slide & diving board that are open every other hour and a high rock climbing wall that
is always open.
Thank you for reading this.

THE ISLAND COTTAGE Dear Reader,
My name is Anna and I am 11 years old. I didn’t do a whole lot this
summer, but I did go to my family cottage in Wisconsin on Washington Island.
My cottage is not fancy like some, but is a modest little home for all my family
on my dad’s side to share. It is a small, blue & white cottage with a front &
back porch. The back shows a lovely view of the lake. You can even sit on our
back porch swing and watch the sunset. I love my cottage.
When we first got to the cottage, we unpacked our
bags. And as a tradition, we headed straight to the 60 foot,
spruce, climbing tree. The big tree is a special tree because it’s been there since my grandpa was
a little boy. It is pretty scary when we reach the top because the tree starts to shake. You can see
the whole lake & marina from there. Sometimes you can see bald eagles flying around.
While we were there we had quite an adventure, taking nature walks,
biking, swimming in the lake, catching snakes & fishing. Also, I want to tell
you about the snake pit. In the snake pit are (you guessed it) snakes! When
we first get to the cottage there is a lot of snake skins in the pit. My dad made this contest to
see who can catch the most snakes. This year, my brother Peter won. Also, right by the snake
pit is Leach Island and we can catch leaches and feed them to the bass.
I like fishing. As long as I don’t have to put the thick worms on the hook. We like to
fish on Jackson Harbor or Detroit Harber. Most of the time, I catch rock bass, but if I’m lucky I
might get a bass on the hook. Even girls like me can fish; it’s fun & easy, except for the
worms. Sometimes you can see some pelicans at Jackson or Detroit Harbor while fishing.
My favorite part of being on the Island was biking to the rocky point that my dad went with grand-dad
when he was a little child. We saw a flock of pelicans, we picked wild strawberries
and we found a northern pike’s skull. I loved listening to the waves crashing against
the rocks. And lastly, hearing the stories of my dad’s childhood at Rock Point was
something special.
We got to see fireworks on July 4th, play with our neighbor friends, enjoy
God’s creation, canoe over quiet, still waters. What could be better?
Soon, the week was over and we had to say goodbye to our beautiful cottage.
We packed our sleeping bags, swept the cottage, drove the garbage to the dumpster &
left for the ferry boat. Riding back, I had already began to miss my home away from
home. Hopefully the experiences I had that week will stay within my heart forever. I’m
so grateful to God that he allows us to come back every year. I love my cottage and I
can’t wait till next year.
Sincerely,
Anna F.

REVIEWS FROM RILEY! Movies & Faires!
Hi! It’s Riley and I’m here to tell you about the Renaissance
Faire. The Renaissance Faire was awesome. I had lots of food,
such as chips & pickles. I also got to throw ninja stars & see
my mom * dad throw axes. Also, I got to see a guy you could
throw tomatoes at. He was so funny. I also saw a mud show;
it was okay. But when they jumped in the mud it got
interesting. If you want to see more, go to the Renaissance
Faire.

I’m here to tell you about the movie, Epic. Epic
starts with the forces of good trying to defeat
the forest. When the queen died, Mary
Katherine has to save a bud. But if they don’t the
power of goodness will be destroyed. If you want
to see more go see the movie. I thought it was a
really good movie.
Now I will tell you about Monsters University.
Monsters University shows the monsters from
Monsters Inc. when they were in college. There
were 6 teams competing for the cup. Mike lead a
team called Ozzma Kappa. The other teammates
were Art, Don Carlton, Squishy, Terri & Terry
Perry & Sulley. The other teams were EEK, JOX,
RNR, HSS & PNK. The movie follows the teams
competing. I thought it was a funny movie & is
almost better than Monsters Inc.
