DESCRIPTION
Take a look at why we commemorate the Holy Week-- including the values one should learn from this momentous event.TRANSCRIPT
HOLY WEEK
Holy Week is the last week of the 40 days of Lent.
It starts with Palm Sunday and ends with Holy Saturday.
It is celebrated to remember the final days of Jesus– His
suffering, death, and resurrection.
Moreover, it tells us about God’s love for mankind.
Jesus came to
Jerusalem,
the week he was to die,
riding on a donkey,
riding strong and high.
PALM SUNDAY
PALM SUNDAY
Through this feast, we remember Jesus’ triumphant entry
into Jerusalem.
According to the Gospels, Jesus rode a donkey into
Jerusalem, the celebrating people lay down their cloaks in
front of him and small branches of trees.
The donkey is an animal of peace.
Jesus’ entry to Jerusalem symbolized His entry as the
Prince of Peace.
The palm branch was a symbol of triumph and victory in
Jewish tradition.
Note: The palm branches used during this celebration are
later on burned and used for the Ash Wednesday.
The week He came,
another man died.
Lazarus was his name.
HOLY MONDAY
“Come out of your grave,”
Jesus cried.
And out of his grave he
came.
Thank you, God of Life; you want me to live, not die.
That week there was another man,
a man who could not see.
Jesus rubbed his eyes and said,
“Believe and you will see.”
And believing, the man could see!
HOLY TUESDAY
Thank you, God of Light for giving light to me.
HOLY MONDAY AND
TUESDAY
Some people believe that on Monday, Jesus also freed
the animals being sold and killed. The freeing of many
oxen and sheep has been compared to the slaves being
set free.
Tuesday was the day that the Pharisees got together and
made a plan to have Jesus killed.
Though not major days for celebration, but these events
did lead up to Jesus’ death.
On Wednesday, one of His friends
Judas was his name
Went to the leaders and said,
“I know where He goes,
I know where He stays,
He’s yours if you want Him.”
So for thirty silver coins, Judas betrayed
Jesus.
HOLY WEDNESDAY
On Thursday night, Jesus ate with His friends.
Bread and wine Jesus gave to them:
“Here is my body and here is my blood.
It will make you free. When you do this,” he said,
“remember me.”
HOLY THURSDAY
On this day, Jesus also told His disciples that it is
more important to serve than to be served.
His disciples feet, He lovingly washed.
HOLY THURSDAY
They went to a garden, after the meal.
Jesus knelt and prayed.
“Father, my Father, help me.
Help me, I am afraid.”
HOLY THURSDAY
Then, Judas came, and soldiers, too.
The soldiers put Him in chains,
and took Him alone to Pontius Pilate.
“He’s dangerous, He must die!” they cried.
HOLY THURSDAY
On Friday, Jesus was made
to drag a huge cross to a hill
all by Himself.
He had a crown on His head
made of thorns.
He was nailed to the cross by
His hands and feet.
“Father take me,” Jesus said.
“Take me into your hands.”
God reached down and took
His only Son.
“I am God who raises up,
Your life has just began.
I am God of the living,
No grave can hold my Son.”
GOOD FRIDAY
After Jesus died, He was put on a tomb.
The guards rolled a big rock in front of the opening
to make sure that no one could get in or out.
It is a time to mourn and remember Jesus’ death.
BLACK SATURDAY
On Sunday, when the week
was done,
Jesus rose from the dead.
“Praise God, Alleluia!”
Risen is God’s only Son!
“Go into the world and preach
the Good News to everyone,
everywhere. Anyone who
believes and is baptized will
be saved. But anyone who
refuses to believe will be
condemned,” Jesus told His
disciples
EASTER SUNDAY
"For God so loved the
world, that He gave His
only begotten Son, that
whoever believes in Him
shall not perish, but have
eternal life.” (John 3:16)
The Holy Week is a week of LOVE.
It is this LOVE that makes this week HOLY.
On Palm Sunday, LOVE leads the way to Jerusalem.
That LOVE washes feet on Maundy Thursday and gives
itself in the Holy Supper.
On Good Friday, it is the LOVE on the cross that saves
us.
Finally, the tomb is emptied on Easter Sunday.
It is about Jesus. It is about His LOVE for all of us.
The Holy Week is a story of a
parent’s love for the WHOLE
family.
This is the parent who loves the
kid who runs away, the kid who
lies, and all other kids with all
their failings and problems.
“Love the Lord, your God
with all your heart and
with all your soul and with
all your mind and with all
your strength.”
“Love your neighbor as
yourself.”
“No one has greater love
than the man who lays
down his life for his
friends.”
“If I have a faith that can move
mountains, but do not have
love, I am nothing.
If I give all I possess to the
poor and give over my body to
hardship that I may boast, but
do not have love, I gain
nothing.
Love is patient. Love is kind.
It does not envy. It does not boast.
It is not proud.
Love does not delight in evil but
rejoices in the truth.
It always protects, always trusts,
always hopes, always perseveres.
- 1 Corinthians 13
And now these three
remain:
Faith. Hope. Love.
But the greatest of these
is:
LOVE.
“Beloved, let us love one
another; for love is of
God, and he who loves is
born of God and knows
God. He who does not love
does not know God; for
God is love.”
- 1 John 4:7-11
From now on, I promise
to:
Love God.
Love Others.
