It is astonishing what highprices goods will bring at auc-
tion in Honolulu. Take for
instance the sale of the articlesrecovered from the wreck o
the Wilcox, there was reallyvery little difference in theprices of the cloth from whatwould be paid in the stores.Perhaps it was because a mandressed in flotsam and jetsamwould feel head and shouldersabove his neighbor who purchased his clothing on creditfrom a tailor. There's goodsand goods and as the articlesin the sale were imported by areliable firm the purchasers atthe sale know they .ire gettingfirst-cla- ss articles even if they
are a little bit damp. It is tobe hoped for the sake of themen who invested their moneyin the wreck that everythingwill turn out to their satisfac-
tion. Speaking of the wreckand the tfTect of the wavesupon the valuable cargo re-
minds us that we have a canvas bag made waterproof andto be used in districts whereice is not available, for thepurpose of cooling water. Itis remarkable what a difference
there is in the temperatureafter the water has been in thebag for a few hours. It is anindispensable to the man whoworks away from a water sup-
ply. We have them in severalvarieties, for hanging on a ver-
andah; on a horse or under abrake. The cheapest is a dol-
lar the largest two dollars,The next thing to ice and pro-bably better for the health.
Among the novelties shownat the Columbian Expositionwas a traveling water sprinkler
one that may be set to carryany number of feet of hoseand water every part of thelawn without your touching thehose. We have a sample inthe store and there are othersin use in Honolulu. Theyhave given satisfaction in theStates as well as here for thework they do as well as for thefact that they do not get out oforder. It is not a toy, thisLittle Giant Sprinkler, but afirst-clas- s sprinkler.
A Mr. Wolff, of New York, father of the gentlemanly sales-man of M. Phillips & Co., isthe inventor of a lawn ttntwhich for comfort, utility, etc.,beats anything the world ever.saw. It is made on the planof an umbrella, ribs, cover andall. The center rod is of gal-
vanized steel passing throughan antique oak table aroundwhich a dozen or more peoplemay sit with comfort. Whenthe umbrella tent is hoisted, and if you feel too much windblowing on you, sides may beattached in a moment so thatyour party may be out of adraught or out of the gaz- -. ofthe outsiders. We are theonly people handling thesetents and we are confidentthey will have th.esamesucee.sshere that they have had in theStates. An umbrella tent isthe lum turn proper at New-
port or Long Branch. Whynot make it so here? We'veother novelties in stock notmentioned in the last ad andyour inspection is invited.

TUB UNDERSIGNED HAVE UEEN APPOINTED MOLE AOENTH FOBthese Shhkudkkb aud are now prepared to receive onlorH.
The great advantages to be derived from the use of the National Oarkdft&KDD&k are thoroughly established and acknowledged by Plantersgenerally.
The Urge number of Planum using them in the United States, Cuba,Argentine Republic, Peru, Australia ami elxowbero, hear witnect to theabove claim.
Tho Ueo of the BllttKimsH very Urguly augment the quantity of cantthe mill dm grind (25 to bO',), also the extraction of juice (5 to 12).
It is a great safeguard, making known at nuco uio presence-- of anypbce of iron, stakes from cars, or anything which would bo liable to damageUie mill, and allowing ample time to remove same before damaging the mill.
The diiKKPDKK is very strougly made, and from tho manner of its operaUon it cuts or tears these pieces of wood or iron without often breaking theditUKUDEK ; and if anything breaks, it is simply some of the knives or cutters, which can bo quickly aud economically replaced. The tiHKKnutm, as itsname indicates, tears tuo cauo into shreds of varying lengths, perfectly open-ing it aud allowing tho mill to thoroughly press out the juices without requiring the irumenso extra power necessary to grind or crush the wholecane. Tho Shkkddkk spreads the shredded cane uniformly and evenly tothe mill rolls, and does away with the necessity of spreading the bagasse byhand butweeu tho mills, where --(.'grinding is in use. No greater amount olboiler capacity is required to operate the SHkkdijkh than that winch wasufficient for the mill, for the above i canons. We furnish full workingdrawings for the installation of our Hiirkddbr, enabling any competent en-gineer to successfully install and start them.
In ordering Siikkddsks from us, pleaso send small sketch, showing thediameter and width of the mill rolls with which Bueiduku is to bo connected, also tho side (either right or toft hand as you face rhe delivery side of thmill-- , upon which tho mill engine is located, also the height from floor lineto center of front mill roll shaft, and distauco center this shaft to front endof bed plate. Thcso Hhkkdukhs are now being used by tho Uilo Hugar Co.and llawi Mill, Kohala, where they are giving great satisfaction.

Most Vmericans who travel in Eu-rope become indignant when theysee women working as farm hands. But Itabbl Joseph Krauikopf ofPhiladelphia, now in Germany, says:"Such farm work for women isneither degrading nor too taxing. They have pledged to bocomo help-mates to their husbands and they ro
it their duty to lesson theabors of their fathors, and, boing
physically able to do their share, they regard it wrong to permit thostronger sex to slave themselves todeath whilo thoy are idling theirtime away at home. Judging fromtheir happy and healthy loolts theyseem to bo nono the worse for takingtheir places alongside the menfolkfor tho purpose of honestly earningthoir bread. Had we a little morepractical good sense and less senti-mentality among our women athomo, many a woman's life might bohappier to-da- hnppir for beingmore useful, and many a man's lifewould bo fpared tho necessity ofslaving itfell to death to indulge awife's or a daughter's idleness andluxuries."

Beet Sugar in Utah.
Beet sugar by irrigation has prov-ed a success in Utah, as told by thomanager of tho Lechi factory, whichcosts some 600,000, and which con-sumes 80,000 tons of beet in a sea-son, paying tho farmer $5 per ton.resulting in a not profit to him of135 per acre. The factory has beenin operation three years and hasproduced, in 1801, 1,100,000 pounds; In 1892, 1,500,000 pounds; in 1893.4,200,000 pounds, and this year willturn out 5,000,000 pounds of refinedsugar. All of this is by irrigation, yet it would require 1000 such fac-tories to supply the home demandof tho United States. Corr. X. V.Post.
