INTRODUCTION
The instructions contained in this service lYlanual are for the inforlYlation and guidance of servicelYlen who are responsible for overhauling and repairing any part of International T-6, TD-6, T-9, TD-9, TD-14A and TD-18A crawler tractors.
This manual provides the servicelYlan with a fast, convenient reference to inforlYlation on operation, lYlaintenance, and repairs, as well as descriptions of the lYlajor units, and their functions in relation to other COlYlponents of the tractor.
LUBRICATION
Instruction on the lubrication of each asselYlbly is given in the Lubrication Chart in the operator r s lYlanual for the particular tractor. When asselYlbling any parts, always coat all wearing surfaces with the lubricant specified in the chart. Except for such installations as taper pins, etc., whose surfaces should be clean and dry, use sufficient quantities of lubricant to prevent any danger of seizing, scoring, or excessive wear when the asselYlbly is first operated. Failure to provide 11 starting lubricationll lYlay result in serious dalYlage.
GASKETS AND SEALS
Always use new gaskets and seals. When installing a leather seal, be sure to install it as specified in the instructions. Be extrelYlely careful not to dalYlage the seal in any way during install a tion.

SERVICE TOOLS
CRAWLER TRACTORS Page 3
International crawler tractors are designed so that few service tools are required other than those in the average mechanic's tool kit. However, whenever the use of inexpensive special service equipm:ent will facilitate work, such equipm:ent is m:entioned in this m:anual. Other than this, it is assum:ed that servicemen will select from: their tool kits such tools as are required. Inform:ation regarding special tool equipm:ent is given in the Indus - / trial Power service manual, "Service Tools" section, CHS-Z30. The IH Industrial Power distributors and dealers already have m:ost of this equipm:ent and are in an excellent position to service these tractors.
SERVICE PARTS
HI tractors deserve genuine IH service parts. The best m:aterial obtainable, and experience gained through m:any years of power equipment manufacturing, enable International Harvester to produce quality that will not be found in imitation or "just as good" repair parts. No serviceman can afford to guarantee a repair job that is not serviced with genuine IH parts. No owner should be satisfied with other than genuine IH parts.
For the correct service parts to be used, always refer to the parts catalog for that particular tractor. The loos e -leaf parts catalogs are a.:curate and are brought up to date continually by issuing new pages covering any changes in part numbers.
SERIAL NUMBERS
Engine and chassis serial numbers can be located readily on International tractors - the engine number is stam:ped on the crankcase where easily visible, and the chassis num:ber is on a nam:e plate attached to the dash.

Overflow valve Radiator cap
Overflow pipe
Hlust. I - Closed Cooling System
1. DESCRIPTION
The cooling system used on IH crawler tractor engines "is conventional type, except certain tractors have a closed type system. The closed type permits operation at extreme angles without loss of coolant through the overflow pipe, and also permits operation at higher engine temperatures without boiling. In the closed type the overflow pipe is equipped with a pressure valve which opens at about 7 lb. pressure. For satisfactory operation of a closed cooling system, extra care must be taken that all connections are watertight. In all other respects, the closed cooling system functions the same as the conventional system.
The conventional system functions as follows: The water is stored in the radiator tanks. A positive displacement centrifugal water pump circulates the coolant from the lower radiator tank through the crankcase and cylinder head water jackets, past the thermostats into the radiator upper tank and down through the cooling area of the radiator core to the lower water tank, where the cycle is repeated. Hose connections provide the joints between the radiator, water pump and water outlet header.
COOLING SYSTEM . Page 7
I1lust. 2A - Cutaway Showing Coolant Circulation in Crankcase and Cylinder Head
of Diesel Engine
When the engine is started cold, the by-pass type thermostat is closed, preventing circulation of low temperature coolant through the radiator core. The coolant circulates only through the water pump and engine water passages as indicated by dotted arrows in illustrations 2 and 3. This circulation during the warm-up period prevents formation of stearn pockets. When the engine reaches operating temperature, which is set by thermostat specifications, the coil of the thermostat expands and opens the passage for the coolant to flow from the engine water passages through.th,= radiator and back to the water pump as lndicated by solid arrows in illustrations 2, 2A and 3. The temperature of the coolant controls the extent of thermostat opening which, in turn, controls the amount of coolant circulation.

The information given in the following pages covers the complete electrical system, which consists of the ignition system, and electric starting and lighting when supplied. Current for ignition is furnished by magneto. When supplied, the starting system in:::ludes batteries, starting motor, generator, and cut-out relay. The electric circuit is direct current, single wire, ground return type, with one terminal of the batteries grounded.

take a cap from stock and cut it away as shown in illust. 87.. Then, by using a feeler gauge, the distance between the distributor ar:m and the insert in the distributor cap can be checked The arm can be adjusted slightly to gain the desired clearance. To adjust the rotor ar:m, loosen the nut (illust. 86) and :move the ar:m to the point where the outside end just clears the vertical portion of the distributor cap inserts.
