Worship God, Serve Others, Form Disciples – The Mission of Columba Last week, I shared with you the mission of St. Columba the namesake of our parish: “Carry the Gospel to the nations and win souls for God.” Columbkille was a missionary at heart, leaving his homeland of Ireland to spread the Gospel in Scotland. You and I do not have to travel to another country or even
another state to evangelize, we must become missionaries in Parma and Seven Hills. Members of our own families and neighbors have yet to meet the Blessed Trinity in a compelling manner and if they don’t hear the Good News from us, they certainly won’t find it in the busyness of the world. I said in my homily last weekend that if God appeared to me and said: “Fr. Suso I want to give you just one thing, anything you want…what would it be?” My answer would be to make every person at St. Columbkille into Saints!
I have a group of hand selected parishioners working on a process to do just that: rebuild the church and form us into Saints. Saints are made in two ways: 1. Holy families that resemble the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph; 2. Discipleship groups that resemble Jesus and the 12 apostles. My dream is to have every single parishioner being a part of a family/group to form them into Saints. It is going to take work…lots of hard work and many years of dedicated formation to arrive at our goal but the payoff is huge…in today’s tumultuous world we need Saints to reshape and rebuild our fallen world. Below are brief descriptions of what a Mission Family group looks like and the Disciple Mentor who leads them.
Mission Family – small groups of 6-12 people who are committed to growing into disciples of Jesus together. Families meet on a weekly basis at church or in homes for fellowship and support: share a meal, view Catholic content on formed.org or elsewhere, pray together a Rosary/read and reflect on sacred scripture and read the lives of the Saints, discuss joys and struggles of life, 1-2 hours long depending on family preference. The goal of every mission family is to form intentional disciples of Jesus who themselves can grow and become disciple mentors. Saints are made in mission families!
Disciple Mentor – a fully initiated Catholic who is committed to daily personal prayer, weekly Sunday worship, monthly confession and is passionate about leading others to form a relationship with the Blessed Trinity. Every mission family has a disciple mentor who leads discussions/prayer – and acts like an accountability partner to keep everyone in the group honest with themselves and striving towards the goal of sainthood. We are just in the beginning planning stages of making this a reality, so I ask you to continue keeping me and our parish in prayer. Never forget, the Lord is with us, always!

FATHER JAMIE’S HEALING HUMOR One pastor of a Cleveland parish had little success in persuading his parishioners to come up to the front pews of the church for Mass. He put this tactful hint in his parish bulletin: “Some people refuse to come up to the front of the church unless escorted by pallbearers.” (from JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, VOL. 8, by Msgr. Arthur Tonne, 1990) We can be reluctant to let go of our comfort zone. But, if we do, we see what Jesus can do with what we have to give. He can take five loaves and two fish and feed a multitude. He will multiply his miraculous works through us as our faith in Him leads us to open our hearts and lives to Him.
WEEKLY SCRIPTURE PASSAGE As we pray together the Scriptures from Paul’s letter to the Romans, let us take comfort in knowing that nothing can separate us from God’s love for us. “What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or the sword? No, in all these things we conquer overwhelmingly through him who loved us.”
REVERENT RECEPTION OF THE EUCHARIST
As we celebrate Sunday Mass, our attention is called to the Precious Body and Blood of Christ in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar. This is a good time to take stock of how well and reverently we receive Christ, who is truly present in the Eucharist. Are we aware of mortal sin on our souls? All mortal sin must be confessed in the Sacrament of Reconciliation before we receive the Eucharist, lest we incur further sin for receiving unworthily (1 Corinthians 11:29). Do we participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation regularly or are we in a pattern of receiving the Eucharist while rarely receiving sacramental absolution? Our participation in the Eucharist presumes our participation in Reconciliation.
When it comes to the way in which we physically receive the Host: In the Ordinary Form of the Roman Rite, which is what we celebrate at St. Columbkille, we are permitted to receive either on the tongue or in the hand. Each form of reception is to be done properly. In both cases, after the minister says, “The Body of Christ,” we acknowledge this reality by responding “Amen” and giving a slight bow of the head. Then, if receiving on the tongue, the head is tilted slightly back and the tongue extended. If receiving in the hand, form a “throne” for Christ, according to St. Cyril of Jerusalem, by cupping one hand under the other. Allow the minister to place the Host flat in the palm of your hand – do not grasp for it. When receiving in the hand, please place the Host in your mouth while standing before the minister. The minister must watch to ensure that the host is received to protect against potential desecration. It is not appropriate to walk back to your pew with the Host! Then, after consuming the Host, check for particles on your hand and fingers – these are still the Eucharist – and consume any remaining elements of the Host.
During the COVID pandemic, when approaching the communion minister, you are to pull your mask below the chin, present one hand resting on the palm of the other and after responding “Amen”, the communicant reverently places the Eucharist in the mouth and immediately replaces their mask.
A blessed Sunday to everyone! May Jesus in the Eucharist bless you abundantly and draw you ever deeper into the Father’s divine life. See you in the Eucharist!

PARISH MINISTRIES
ASK THE DEACONQ.: Did Jesus really know He was God from birth or was this something He’d come to realize as He grew?
A. WOW! This is a most interesting question that caused me to do some research before I could reply.
To be honest, we have to first define what we mean by “God” – not for us today because we have 2,000 years of Christian perception and understanding to support us, but what was the meaning of “God” to a first century Jew? To one living at the time of Jesus, “God” would have been thought of as One who lived in heaven. So, if a question was asked of Jesus, “Do you think you are God?” they would mean did He think He was the One who lived in heaven. The question would be inappropriate because, very obviously, Jesus was living here on Earth. We have no scriptural record of that question ever being put to our Lord, but His relationship with God certainly was a point of reference at least once. In St. Mark’s Gospel, a man addresses Jesus as “good teacher” and Jesus replies, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone.” In this somewhat off-putting response, Jesus shows a distancing between Himself and the term “God.”
In the scene where our Lord appears to the Apostles and specifically St. Thomas after His resurrection, Thomas calls Jesus “my Lord and my God” and Jesus does not correct him. The understanding here is that by this time in the ministry of Christ, at least to the Apostles and Gospel writers, the definition of the word “God” was expanded to mean the Father in heaven and the Son on Earth. This was not a reflection of any change in Jesus but a change or growth in the perception of our Christian belief as to who He was. Another example of that growth we still use today, happened during the Council of Nicea in the year 325 where the Son of God was described as “begotten, not made, true God from true God.” You see our understanding and perception of God continues to grow, and in a way, evolve over time.
So, back to the question, “Did Jesus know who He was? Did He know He was God?” The simplest answer has to be “yes,” however, we have no definitive proof of that because there is so much of His life we have no record of. We do have record of Jesus’ awareness of His relationship with God and that is the source of His ability to speak with overwhelming authority. Further, there are no accounts in scripture of Jesus discovering something about Himself He didn’t know before. The scene at the Baptism of our Lord is designed to tell the readers and John the Baptist who Jesus is and not to tell Him who He is.
What? You have another question? It’ll have to wait till next week!
EUCHARISTIC ADORATION CHAPEL “Do you want Our Lord to give you many graces? Visit Him often. Do you want Him to give you few graces? Visit Him seldom. Visits to the Blessed Sacrament are powerful and an indispensable means of overcoming the attacks of the devil. Make frequent visits to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and the devil will be powerless against you.” St. John Bosco The Eucharistic Adoration Chapel, located in the Parish Center, is open daily between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. You DO NOT need an appointment; you will, however, need a face mask and are asked to respect social distancing guidelines. Anyone interested in spending a specific hour each week with Jesus, please call Scott or Amanda at (216) 310-6831.
GOOD SAMARITAN ITEMS NEEDED Our Good Samaritan Ministry needs certain basic items to fill our pantry. The needed items are: canned meats, canned fruit, jellies, jello, pudding, coffee, tea, toilet paper, paper towels, laundry detergent and dish detergent. We are also in need of cash donations to purchase food certificates for our needy families. Food deliveries can be made at the door at the rear of the Rectory between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and noon. As a parish, you have always been very generous in the past and we know we can count on your continued support! Please stay safe during this trying time and thank you for your support of our needy families!
CATCHING FIRE – YOUNG ADULT GROUP Our “Catching Fire” young adult group (ages 18 to 39) group is meeting outside in front of the school at 7:00 p.m. on Sundays. For more information or to join the group, please contact
either Joe at [email protected] or Jimmy at [email protected].
A NOTE FROM FATHER LEONARD Please continue to pray for those going through celebrations and losses during this difficult time. Even in the joyful celebration, there is grief that they are not the way we hoped they would be. Our support and prayers are with those celebrating Baptism, First Communion, and Marriage. We hold in prayer those suffering the loss of a loved one. The practical challenges of the pandemic add extra difficulty. We understand and are united in joining our sufferings to the sufferings of Jesus Christ. Of course, we continue to remain connected in prayer with those who are at home on Sunday. Stay healthy and continue to keep one another safe.

AROUND THE TOWN
RED CROSS NEWS! On June 15, the American Red Cross began testing all blood, platelet and plasma donations for COVID-19 antibodies. The antibody test is authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and may indicate if the donor’s immune system has produced antibodies to the coronavirus, regardless of whether they developed symptoms. The Red Cross hopes testing for COVID-19 antibodies will provide our valued donors insight into whether they may have been exposed to this coronavirus. We recognize that individuals and public health organizations desire more information about COVID-19, and as an organization dedicated to helping others, the Red Cross is fortunate to be able to help during this pandemic.

AUGUST 2, 2020 FINANCIAL NEWS & AROUND THE TOWN
6
SUPPORT OUR ADVERTISERS Local businesses and sponsors who advertise in our bulletin need you more now than ever. Please encourage others to show their support during this time by supporting these businesses.
FINANCIAL NEWS AND NOTES
• If you are unable to attend Mass, you can always drop off your weekly offertory envelope at the Parish Office or you can put it in another envelope and mail it.
• Please refrain from sending us one single check attached to multiple unmarked envelopes. The parish has no way of knowing how much money is being designated for each unmarked envelope therefore they must be returned. Please carefully mark your envelopes with the proper dollar amount so you can receive credit for your donation.
• Tuition assistance envelopes are processed separately from weekly offertory. Therefore, please write a separate check when contributing to tuition assistance. Catholic Charities envelopes are processed by the diocese, so please write a separate check when contributing to Catholic Charities.
WEEKLY OFFERTORY
The offertory collection for the week of July 25th and 26th was $11,481.70. This includes the envelopes we received at the parish during the week and at the Masses. The second half of July Faith Direct contributions was $7,581.
Thank you for your continued generosity to our parish!
COVID-19 TESTING IN BROADVIEW HEIGHTS
The testing site is at 7750 Town Centre Drive, Broadview Heights. The hours are Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. and then from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., and sometimes on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. The phone number is 1-877-283-8863. You do not have to be a resident of Broadview Heights. You can register online at www.Bowtiemedical.com or you can just show up. You do not need a doctor’s order/prescription. They do a superbill that is $100.00 and you get the results the next day. When you click on the link for the results, you enter your insurance information. They estimate that 99% of all insurances cover the full cost.
