RE-ENGRAVED: ~e-engraving ( ~ r r e c u t t i n g ) , as defined in the second e w edition of Alan Herbert's t W f f i c i a l Pricc Guide to M i n t Errors and U

1E traricties" Ifor which I had the fionos to serve on the Advisory Panel) , refers to 4 t h e operation 6s b e i n g : "Any work on t h e d i e or huh with engraving -*

F- tools, other than punches,,to add to the dcsign, strengthen weak areas of the dcsign, correct mistakes in the design or t o promote m e t a l flow i n t o constricted areas of t h c d e s i g n , ' V e p u n c h i n g , on t h e other hand, involves the use of small punches usually bearing a single letter or number.

D I E POLISHING: For various reasons, most dies are polished several times during t h e i r useful lives. This is done by hand or with the use of a power-driven rotating tool which.abrasivcly polishes or smooths the surface of the die. The operation is somewhat like smoothing a rough piece of wood with sandpaper, but much finer. T h l s polishing involves the removal of a thin layer of the die's surface meta l which usually reduces the sharpness of some of the d e t a i l ( l e t t er s , numbers, designs, e t c . ) . Most collectors arc familiar with the "Arnprio~" silver dollars. These are good examples ~f what can happen when a d i e is ovsrpolished, In this case, repeated polishing eventually removed some of t h e waterlines. Although such variet ies arc t r i v i a l , they arc nevertheless popular.

The polishing operation may also reduce the size of a letter (or number, etc.), since the c a v i t y of a character in t h e d i e is'\ shaped (tapered s i d e s ) and t h e more surface metal is removed by polishing, the narrower a character t e n d s to become. On t h e other hand, when the polishing tool also goes down into t h e character, it will usually be enlarged, because the s i d e walls of the character are abrasively ground outward. This reduction or en3argerncnt may result in the appearance of "thick and th in4 ' or "large and mall" dates (or letters). Of course, this doesn' t mean that any difference in s ize between the date on a Riven coin w i t h t h a t on another is necessarily caused by d i e polishing, but more often t han not, it is. True "largo and small'" numbers, letters, dates, etc. are usually t h e result of using an individual lcttcr punch or logotype (a punch bearing two or mare characters) in which the size of t h e character is at least 113 mallcr or larger than t h e standard size f o r a coin of the sme d a t ~ and type.-

POLISHED DIE DOUBLING: Itqs import lnt to keep in mind that the design on the face of a d i e is sunken, as opposed to t h e raised design on a coin, The operation of polishing a d i e can sometimes r e s u l t in the doubling of letters, numbers or a part of the design which, I n t u r n , will be = + CI

symmetrically transferred to all coins s truck by this particular die. r? %

This phenomenon, referred to as "polish doublingt\ takes two basic farms ,.3 L- -3 The first is called "Inside Polish Doublingw. Th5s is caused when

the' rotating polishing tool reaches down i n t o a letter, number or d e i g n '4 elemcn t (which is below the dfe'a surfacel and grinds a -ma1 l piece out o f the ,

s i d e m w a l l ' ' o f t h e character. This results in an appearanceof dmbl in~: of the desfan element which will manifest itself on the s truck coin. C.

The s e c ~ n d form is called "Outside Polish Doubling" and is caused when -Z

the revolving a b r a ~ i v e polishing tool comes up and out of a letter, 22 e number or d e s i g n clement and f a l , l s back shaply onto t h e die, thusdigging a shallow depression in t h e die's surface next to, but outside, the character it j u s t came out of. Thcse d l e grooves produce a corsespondlng raised area an the coin%ssurface, usually roughly matching t h e o u t l i n e o f t h e design element, but somewhat more irregular and often incomplete.

OTHER EXAMPLES OF POLISH DOUB&ING: There are many other Canadian coins which are frequently labled and sold as 'Ye-engraved" but arc actual ly common polish doubl ing . Perhaps the best known are the 1962 and 1967 f i v c - c e n t plcces which are commonly referred to as "doublc date" or "re-engraved date"'.

ARE 1979 CENTS WITH POLISH DOUBLING SCARCE? Definitely not - in any sense of the word. Polish doubling I s one of t h e most common forms of doubling found on modern coins (the lmst common t y p is "Ejection Doubling" w hich is txplorcd in dep th I n my a r t i c f c p h l ished in t k December 1979 i s s u e of "The Canadian hrnismatfc Journal*] . My Own experience s h o w s t h a t One O u t of every t e n I979 cents picked out of circulation has one or more d i g i t s (usually 2 or 3 ) of the date showing machine polish doubling. So, despite claims by one well-known dealer tha t these cgins are "destined to increase in price", the fact remafns t h a t 1979 cents with polish doubllng are far too common to have any tmrthwhite investment potential.

ARE THEY FUN TO COLLECT? of course! with a l i t t le patience, you can pick out quite a number of different varieties from circulation showing various degrees and shapes of doubling involving one ta all four numbers of t h e date .

BUT ARE THEY VALUABLE? Yes, some varieties can be worth up to each!
