I. ElectromagnetismSurrounding every magnet is area

where they are able to exert a force on “ferromagnetic” objects.

*A ferromagnetic material is one that is both attracted to a magnet, and can become magnetized such as iron, nickel or cobalt.

I. Electromagnetism continued…

As seen in the previous slide, only ferromagnetic materials normally have a magnetic field around them.

However, magnetic fields can be created. ..

Magnetic fields are created around ANY moving charged particle.

That means that whenever you have an electric current, you create a magnetic field in the area surrounding the current.

II. Electric Motors1. Turn on the electricity in

a wire, and a magnetic field is created around it

2. Place a magnet near the wire and the magnet will be pushed away when the current begins.

3. Set it up to that the system can spin, and you have a motor.

Electricity to motion…

III. Electric Generator1. Think of how a motor works,

and then reverse the idea.2. Instead of starting with

electricity pushing against a magnet, think about something pushing against a magnet which then causes the electricity to flow through the wire.

3. Generators are like motors only reversed.

Motion to electricity…

II. Electric Motors & Generators

In this video are both a generator and a motor. FIRST, legs turn the pedals to generate electricity in the “generator”. This causes electrons to move around the wires into the circuit

and around the train track. When they enter the train, they push against the motor magnets to spin the train wheels around the track… Motion to electricity – electricity to motion…
