i-docs: why, how and how much
![Page 2: i-doc talk for ESoDdoc 2013](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062614/54648142af7959e6478b59bc/html5/thumbnails/2.jpg)
A linear documentary is a creative treatment of actuality
An i-doc is non linear interactive
![Page 3: i-doc talk for ESoDdoc 2013](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062614/54648142af7959e6478b59bc/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
Defining i-docs
Any project that intends to document the real, and that does so by using digital interactive technology, can be called an i-doc.
![Page 4: i-doc talk for ESoDdoc 2013](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062614/54648142af7959e6478b59bc/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
A media specific contract with the audience
![Page 5: i-doc talk for ESoDdoc 2013](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062614/54648142af7959e6478b59bc/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
i-docs as a proposition to enter into a dynamic world and to change it to a
certain degree (depending on the level of agency given to the user)
From: One millionth Tower, NFB, 2012
![Page 6: i-doc talk for ESoDdoc 2013](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062614/54648142af7959e6478b59bc/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Agency
‘the satisfying power to take meaningful action and see the results of our decisions and choices’ (Janet H. Murray, Hamlet on the Holodeck,1997:126)
![Page 7: i-doc talk for ESoDdoc 2013](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062614/54648142af7959e6478b59bc/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Agency
satisfying power
choices
![Page 8: i-doc talk for ESoDdoc 2013](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062614/54648142af7959e6478b59bc/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Agency
power +
choices = change
feed-back loop
![Page 9: i-doc talk for ESoDdoc 2013](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062614/54648142af7959e6478b59bc/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
the feed-back loop of
interactivity goes beyond
the user-computer... and so does your i-doc!
![Page 10: i-doc talk for ESoDdoc 2013](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062614/54648142af7959e6478b59bc/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
The i-doc as part of an ecosystem
it DOES things, you only control part of it
![Page 11: i-doc talk for ESoDdoc 2013](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062614/54648142af7959e6478b59bc/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
The Living documentary
1. effect/impact does not stop at user-computer 2. not human centred approach, but systemic3. levels of aliveness = levels of doing (impact)4. aptitude to self-organize, to adapt to their
environment, and to change it5. life and death of an i-doc
![Page 12: i-doc talk for ESoDdoc 2013](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062614/54648142af7959e6478b59bc/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
i-doc as a relational & living entity
Put the emphasis what it makes you DO (rather than what it SAYS to you)
![Page 13: i-doc talk for ESoDdoc 2013](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062614/54648142af7959e6478b59bc/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
