SUMMER in Sandpoint means nonstop activity or pure relaxation. Every
outdoor pursuit imaginable is just out our back door, from water skiing,
swimming and boating, to fi shing, biking, hiking and golf. Play at
the skatepark and tennis courts, both free in city parks. Downtown is
alive with arts and music festivals, art gallery receptions and tours,
shopping and dining, and so much more. Enjoy the works of dozens of local
artists in the self-guided Artists’ Studio Tour at locations all over Bonner
and Boundary counties, or see revolving exhibits during Artwalk in more than
20 downtown locations. The Sandpoint Farmers Market at Farmin Park of-
fers an impressive collection of produce, fl owers, and arts and crafts vendors,
twice weekly, on Wednesday and on Saturday, which is the day when live
music is a bonus. Plus there’s a farmers market in Hope on Fridays. Choose
to spend a lazy day at City Beach in Sandpoint, or for thrills and chills visit
the Northwest’s largest theme park, Silverwood Theme Park and Boulder Beach Water Park. Take a scenic drive on part or all of the International
Selkirk Loop, or just fi nd a quiet spot and enjoy the view. At the end of the
day, take a seat and perhaps enjoy a concert, fi lm or performance at the
historic Panida Theater. On Saturdays, stop by the corner of First and Cedar
to hear different musical acts perform free concerts in a series sponsored by
the Pend Oreille Arts Council (POAC), Summer Sounds at Park Place. And
don’t miss POAC’s other series of free concerts at City Beach, Sunday Con-certs-on-the-Lawn, overlooking Lake Pend Oreille in front of the Edgewater
Resort. The summer calendar is dotted with a whole host of other special
events, including the Wooden Boat Festival, Long Bridge Swim, Festival at Sandpoint, Arts and Crafts Fair, Bonner County Fair and Rodeo.
Take a tour with Lake Pend Oreille Cruises, or explore the big lake’s many
nooks and crannies by kayak. Adventure awaits around every bend in the river,
every curve of Lake Pend Oreille’s 111-mile-long shoreline, and every trail
and high-mountain road leading into the beautiful Selkirk and Cabinet mountains. Summer in Sandpoint – what a beautiful pace.

AUTUMN is the perfect time to enjoy Sandpoint’s more rigorous outdoor activities. Calm, cool days bring
pleasant weather for hiking and mountain biking, golf and horseback riding. Bird watchers fl ock to the
Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge to see migrating birds on the Pacifi c Flyway, and people of all ages enjoy
walking the interpretive trails at WaterLife Discovery Center. Though summer’s fl owers are fading, the arts
blossom forth in this season in Sandpoint. The Pend Oreille Arts Council Performance Series kicks off
in September at the historic Panida Theater, featuring exceptional performing arts groups from around the
world. The theater also hosts the Schweitzer Lakedance International Film Festival, screening dozens
of independent fi lms. The season is celebrated on the mountain at Schweitzer Fall Fest and downtown at
the Harvest Party thrown at Pend d’Oreille Winery, Oktoberfest sponsored by Downtown Sandpoint and
Harvestfest at Farmin Park. Hundreds of equine performers convene for the Idaho State Draft Horse and Mule International in mid-September. The red carpet gets rolled out at Holly Eve, and fi shermen compete in
the Thanksgiving Fishing Derby on Lake Pend Oreille. Fall is also the season for sportsmen and women to
scout for big game in the Selkirk and Cabinet mountains. Meanwhile, the fall colors grow more vivid every day
as mountaintops get dusted with snow. Grab your camera to record the native trees that light up the mountain-
sides and shorelines of all the lakes and rivers. Autumn in northern Idaho – what a beautiful pace.

W INTER in Sandpoint, whether indoors or out, stimulates the soul. The
arts are in full swing, and the mountains turn into a snowy playground. As the
snow starts to fall, the adrenaline rises, especially at higher elevations. Atop
the Selkirk Mountains above Sandpoint, Schweitzer Mountain Resort beckons skiers and snowboarders to carve their own space among 2,900 acres
of terrain. The Inland Northwest’s largest ski resort, Schweitzer is ranked by
Skiing magazine among the top 25 ski areas and at No. 3 in tree skiing in
North America. Uncrowded slopes offer endless adventure on 84 named trails,
two open bowls and treed glades. Plus there’s a terrain park, Nordic trails, a
snowshoe trail and tubing center. Snowmobile and backcountry ski tours
add to the heap of winter fun at Schweitzer. Anyone yearning for cross-coun-try skiing fi nds plenty of terrain in the backcountry of northern Idaho: 32
kilometers of scenic groomed trails at Schweitzer; 3 miles at Round Lake State Park; more than 7 kilometers at Farragut State Park; more than
40 kilometers of combined trails connecting Hannah Flats and the Priest Lake Nordic Center; and trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing
at StoneRidge Golf and Recreational Community. Catch dogsledding fever with True North Expeditions, an outfi tter service offering Musher
101 Camp and guided tours, starting with a two-hour ride. Head to Western Pleasure Guest Ranch, in a rural setting northeast of Sandpoint, for an
old-fashioned sleigh ride that can be combined with a gourmet dinner, or
go to Stillwater Ranch, in the countryside south of Sandpoint in Sagle.
Hold onto your sleds – hundreds of miles of groomed snowmobile trails line
the mountains around Sandpoint and Priest Lake, where the Selkirk Crest is
renowned. Winter also caters to the arts, as the POAC Performance Series
draws more outstanding performers, and the Banff Mountain Film Festival in January brings inspiring fi lms to the Panida Theater. The 35th annual
Sandpoint Winter Carnival in January celebrates the season with parades,
parties and family events. The Pend d’Oreille Winery’s Chocolate and Wine Tasting in February is just plain yummy, and the Sandpoint Mardi Gras
brings a slice of New Orleans to town. Winter in Bonner and Boundary counties – what a beautiful pace.

S PR I NG in Sandpoint is the time to peel off the winter clothing and enjoy lengthening days and warmer
weather. Enjoy spring skiing at Schweitzer Mountain Resort or play a round of golf at one of several scenic
courses. The mountain brings top skiers and snowboarders to compete in the Stomp Games in March and holds
its annual spring celebration, Tropical Daze, in early April. It’s a weekend full of live music, races, games and
contests, such as the Rubber Duck Derby and the Downhill Dummy Race. In late April the fi shing season gets
launched on Lake Pend Oreille during the annual Spring K&K Fishing Derby – luring anglers of all ages
who hope to catch the next record rainbow trout. Hundreds of vintage cars roll into town for Lost in the ’50s Weekend, in mid-May, with dance shows and concerts, a car parade and show, and more. As the snow melts in
the high country, endless hiking and mountain biking trails open up, and the Priest and Moyie rivers become
havens for whitewater kayaking. The Pend Oreille Arts Council wraps up its Performance Series in April
with two awesome acts – a cultural dance group from New Zealand and a renowned London opera company
performing “H.M.S. Pinafore.” Coinciding with Mother’s Day Weekend, the Pend d’Oreille Winery slates its
Huckleberry Blush Release – a good time to warm up to spring. Meantime, Silverwood Theme Park opens
for the season, much to the delight of thrill seekers, while Sandpoint’s many city parks green up. Spring foliage
and fl ower unfold at the Native Plant Society Arboretum and the Healing Garden, just as the Sandpoint Farmers Market opens for the season. Spring in the Idaho Panhandle – what a beautiful pace.

T RA I LS . An abundance of public lands in and around Sandpoint plus a number of
resorts lend many ways to view the spectacular scenery of this picturesque town and
surrounding mountains. To view the dazzling waters of Lake Pend Oreille, hike the
new Mickinnick Trail on a ridge overlooking town, the Mineral Point Trail that hugs
the rugged western shoreline, the Scotchman Peaks Trail high in the Cabinets, the
Gold Hill Trail southeast of town or across the Pedestrian Long Bridge. Try walk-
ing, bicycling or roller-blading the miles and miles of North Idaho Bikeways’ paved
trail system, connecting Sandpoint to Sagle, Dover and Ponderay. Or catch a ride on the
Great Escape chairlift to the top of Schweitzer Mountain Resort and walk or take a
mountain bike down exhilarating single-track trails. Or if you like, hop on an ATV or ride
horseback deep into the boundless backcountry. Come winter, the backcountry is the
perfect place to ride snowmobiles on seemingly endless groomed trails or open bowls
carved by glaciers over age-old granite in the Selkirk and Cabinet mountains.
Then there are all the groomed snowshoeing and cross-country ski trails at Schweitzer,
Priest Lake Nordic Center and three state parks in the area. The sky’s the limit,
really, when it comes to exploring the outdoors on the many trails in northern Idaho.
