I am pleased to report that an overwhelming response was received from our donors for our two new initiatives, The i-Care Qarz-e-Hasna Scholarship Program and The i-Care Sehr-o-Iftar Program. Through the Sehr-o-Iftar program, we were able to provide meals to thousands of people in impoverished neighborhoods of Karachi. The scholarship fund has been success- fully launched, through which i-Care has initially sponsored 150 students. In this issue, we highlight the work of the i-Care Scholarship Fund. There are many success stories of deserving students having been awarded scholarships by i-Care all over Pakistan. Here we focus on the stories of two sets of siblings; hailing from humble backgrounds they have reached high peaks, through their determination and perseverance, attenuated by your support through i-Care. Inspired by these models, The i-Care Foundation has responded by creating its own educational fund. This has garnered support from all over Pakistan, and enabled students to fulfill their dreams of higher education. More details about their jour- neys are given in this issue. The i-Care Foundation Scholarship Fund is committed to supporting promising and deserving students in their pursuit of the higher education, training and skill development required to change their lives for the better. The Scholarship Fund exists to bridge the fee gap for merit-based admitted students to be able to attend public sector universities. We are now stepping into a new realm to further the work of the scholarship fund by partnering with corporations and universities. With a requested sponsorship of $750 per student per year, for a named scholarship you can contribute to changing the lives of many other struggling students. As always, i-Care is committed to complete transparency, accountability and ensur- ing that you receive value for your philanthropy. Please make your donation today to enable bright, young men and women to get a life changing education. Farrokh K. Captain Chairman i-Care News September 2017 Page 1

Fruits of Labor

The son of a fruit seller on the streets of Karachi, Fazal ur Rehman goes to McGill University! Here is Fazal’s story in his own words:

Then, I got my acceptance letter from McGill University.

All I dream of now is nding enough funding or being granted a full scholarship so that I can actually go." Quote taken from Humans of Karachi, an online photography page which photographed Fazal-ur-Rehman to spread his story.

Fazal’s pursuit for higher education began when the school he studied in took a special interest in his educa-tion. His mentor and teacher was thrilled by the news of his acceptance at McGill University. She reached out to her friends and family for raising the funds for Fazal ul Rehman. McGill University had oered him a 50% scholarship, and for the remaining funds, Fazal’s support group worked with The i-Care Foundation to open an account where people could make donations.

The i-Care Foundation responded by creating an Education Fund for Fazal ur Rehman in 2013. Since then, dozens of supporters have contributed nancially to cover the remaining 50% of tuition fees. Through these generous donors, and with i-Care’s commitment and backend support, Fazal was able to apply for a Canadian visa and begin his rst year at McGill University studying mechanical engineering. Following in his footsteps, his younger brother Fazal Mahmood was also able to secure a scholarship at The Lyceum School for his A Levels. Later he also received admission at McGill University.

The i-Care Foundation worked with the same group of donors and were able to garner more support for Fazal Mahmood, which enabled him too to enter McGill and pursue a degree in chemical engineering.

Fazal ur Rehman was recently selected for an international internship in Japan, and is now set to begin his 5th year in McGill’s Materials Engineering Co-op Program. Fazal Mahmood is set to begin his 3rd year in McGill’s Electrical Engineering & Computer Science Program. Both the brothers are looking forward to returning to Pakistan after gaining professional experience in their respective elds abroad.

“Words can't describe how blessed I feel for all the nancial help from so many donors through I-Care. Educa-tion was an ambition, an aspiration, and a dream of a father for his son. Now this dream is at the verge of completion. I would like to thank everyone and I-Care for making it come true.” – Fazal ur Rehman.

"My dad is a fruit seller on a street in Karachi. He made sure my brother, sister and I go to school because he believes education will improve our nancial situation and also help level the playing eld for many others like me. It's been a long journey for me from school to O'levels and A'levels at one of the most prestigious institutions in Karachi. This was made possible partly through a merit based scholarship, and partly through sponsorship by a wonderful teacher who believed in me.

Sisters striving for success

Mahgul and Tehreem Khizer come from Dera Ismail Khan and lived in Lahore because of their father’s business. Unfortunately, their father fell sick and lost his fortune. Consequently they had to move back to Dera Ismail Khan. Here they had limited options for receiving quality education. However both sisters had a passion for education and their mother encouraged them to pursue their passions. Their struggles in Dera Ismail Khan produced great results; both sisters excelled in their intermediate studies, receiving gold medals and other accolades in their higher secondary exams.

The University of Engineering and Technology Peshawar oered Tehreem Khizer admission in its IT program with a partial scholarship. She is now in her nal year and is expected to bag the gold medal as she is at the top of her class.

Mahgul Khizer will graduate from the Masters program in psychology from the University of Peshawar in November 2017. Below is Mahgul’s story, in her own words:

“At 13, sitting on the cemented oor of government school in a small village, I had never thought that one day I will move out of my small circle to a well-known institute of Pakistan. Due to lack of nancial resources, I was worried about continuing my education. However, my mother had always supported and encouraged our education and rose to the occasion. With the help of The i-Care Foundation, she was able to gather enough support to ensure we continued our education. Since the beginning, my condence in education supported me through all hardships, and I believed my dreams will come true. So after doing FSC and B.A, I got scholar-ship based admission at my preferred university. By the end of November, I will be nished with my Masters, and Subhan Allah so far I have the highest score in my class.’

Currently, Mahgul Khizer has applied for M.Phil at NUST in Islamabad and is expected to start this year. Tehreem Khizer will graduate in June 2018, and also wants to pursue a graduate degree from NUST after graduation in IT.
