Message from Fr. Pergjini- It was this time last year that I flew from JFK airport to Santiago, Dominican Republic, in the Caribbean. For a short time, I left behind the cold bitter weather in New York and arrived in Dominican Republic welcomed by blue sky and pleasant summer temperatures. I would like to tell you how it is that I went there, and what I found in my three days of visiting. I did not go to a fancy resort to rest, escaping the cold weather in New York as some of the snowbirds might do. Rather, a faithful and generous family in our parish had invited me to their house in Villa Trina, a small town outside of Santiago city, in the beautiful green Dominican mountains. I humbly and gratefully accepted their invitation, and spent some wonderful time with their family. Before I came to Saint Lucy’s parish, I knew a few people from Dominican Republic and other Spanish speaking countries. I found them to be wonderful people and am still in touch with them. But now, at St. Lucy’s, I’m so glad to meet many more people from Latin American backgrounds, and for the past six years of my stay here, I have become inspired and encouraged by so many generous and wonderful people from this part of the world. Their deep faith in Christ is to be admired and imitated. I feel directly connected to their lives and their joy, and they are surely connected to mine. The Dominican family who invited me to Dominican Republic, are humble, honest, and faithful members of our parish, with a wonderful devotion and love for God. As I am writing to describe my visit to their home, I joyfully recall their welcoming hospitality and their deep faith. As soon as we arrived at their home, I was received by about twenty people, who were members of their family and others from the parish, Our Lady of Mount Carmel. We shared a delicious meal together. It was truly prepared with love and joy. After dinner, we said the rosary together. There was a large crowd in their magnificent living room. People also gathered outside on the veranda, which was surrounded by so many evergreen plants that I felt as though I were in a little botanical garden. Many of the people were kneeling with a deep reverence and devotion during our twenty minutes of prayer. I could feel in their voices during those Hail Mary’s their trust in the intercession of our Blessed Mother as we recited the sorrowful mysteries. It was a very moving experience to be with people I had never known before, in a place I have never been to before, to communicate in a language which I am still learning, and still to feel completely at home, embraced by love and the power of the Holy Rosary. I felt a living moment of faith with Christ and Mary praying with these sincere and humble people. The rest of my short stay extended the experience of deep faith I found among these wonderful people, as we went to visit a remote rural area called a “campo” in Spanish. The parish priest, a young and patient man, drove his truck for two hours over very bumpy and difficult roads. He could drive only five miles per hour or even less. During the trip, he stopped several times picking up children with their parents as they were walking on their way to Holy Mass. As soon they saw the truck they smiled to the priest who knew them all by name. Finally we arrived at the church and were ready to celebrate Holy Mass. You might think the small crowd of thirty people was even larger as they filled the top of that beautiful mountain with joyful song. They sang with their whole heart, soul, and mind, and it filled me with delight. They also showed an obvious love and reverence for the Holy Eucharist which was a moving and powerful experience. After the Holy Mass, we went to visit two children who are taken care of by my host family. The children are handicapped orphans. It was very moving to see the children as our parishioners walked in. The children obviously knew them, and started to cry as they were so happy to see those who are taking care of them. With embraces all around, it felt like a little sea of love, to see the attachment each had for the other, in a timeless moment of pure joy for the two young and innocent children who were so much in need of ordinary attention and affection. It was in moments like these that I grew to know my wonderful host family better. When we find ourselves in the presence of real virtue, humility, and generosity of spirit, we naturally grow to admire people like this, and the possibility of friendship grows as well. Yes, it was during the days of this wonderful visit that I not only experienced the beauty of their faith, but I began to know them from the heart, two beautiful and humble hearts for God. This was my first experience in Dominican Republic. It is a beautiful country of sun and the deep green of trees that covered unending mountains rolling out into the distance. To me, these moments became signs of the light and the life of Christ among so many gracious and generous people. The deep and profound faith of my host family truly touched my heart. This experience has also brought me to know and appreciate even more, my old friends and my new friends from Dominican Republic. Thank you to my new friends for your very generous invitation! May the warm and welcoming spirit of Dominican Republic return with me, and may Our Lady of Alta Grazia pray for us and all those who live now or once lived in this wonderful and beautiful land.

On February 15th, 2015, the world learned of the murder of twenty-one Coptic Christians at the hands of ISIS terrorists in Libya. At the time, our Holy Father, Pope Francis, referred to the witness of these brave Christians as “a testimony which cries out to be heard.” As members of the Archdiocese of New York we will take time to pause in prayer and to remember all those who face the stark reality of religious persecution in the Middle East and elsewhere. On Monday, February 15th, at 10 a.m. we will celebrate the Mass “For Persecuted Christians”. Holy Mass will be

followed by Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. We invite all parishioners and friends to attend and join together to remember and pray for our persecuted brothers and sisters in Christ.

Our Lady of Lourdes - Thursday, February 11, 2016 Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be celebrated

at the Grotto at 12:30 p.m. St. Pope John Paul II designated the 11th of February as World Day of the Sick, “a special time of prayer and sharing, of offering one’s suffering for the good of the Church and of reminding us to see in our sick brother and sister the face of Christ who, by suffering, dying, and rising, achieved the salvation of humankind”.

This week marks the beginning of the 2016 Cardinal’s Appeal in our parish. You will be receiving a letter from Cardinal Dolan asking for your support of the vital ministries, programs and services provided through the Appeal each year. When you receive your letter, please fill out your pledge card and send it in. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

Year of Mercy - Holy Doors Pilgrimage St. Lucy’s Bible Group, Divine Mercy Group and the Daughters of Mary invite you to do a pilgrimage to the Holy Doors at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Saturday, January 30th. All those, who, on pilgrimage, enter a Door of Mercy with the proper intention and fulfill the conditions can obtain a Jubilee Indulgence either for themselves or for the souls of their dearly departed. The conditions are: 1. Baptized Catholics in a state of grace, having the interior disposition of detachment from sin; 2. Go to Confession within 20 days after performing the indulgenced work; 3. Pray for the intentions of the Holy Father within 20 days after performing the indulgenced work. We will all attend the 9 a.m. Saturday mass celebration at St. Lucy’s parish; after the Mass we will sit for 15 minutes of prayer and reflection for the intentions of the Holy Father; and then meet later on at 12 noon sharp at the # 2 train station on Allerton Avenue and White Plains Road (in front of Dunkin Donuts.) All are welcome to attend. Please bring your own Metrocard and wear comfortable walking shoes.

Deacon Kenneth L. Radcliffe will be the guest speaker at the next St. Lucy’s

Holy Name Society meeting on Sunday, February 14th, following the 9:15 a.m. Mass. Deacon Radcliffe is a Permanent Deacon for the Archdiocese of New York and has served as an Administrative Chaplain, (Retired), for the New York City Department of Correction. His assignments included Rikers Island, detention centers, in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Manhattan Detention Center, MDC, also known as "The Tombs" He is a trained Substance Abuse/Addictions counselor. He will be speaking on his book “Applying Alcoholics Anonymous Principles to the Disease of Racism.” All men of the parish are invited to attend.
