Message from the President and Executive Director
The saying goes, “It takes a village to raise a child.” And while there is truth to that aphorism, sometimes it takes more than that; sometimes it takes Buffalo Prep lending a hand to raise that child to his or her full potential.
Too often, gifted, motivated and deserving young people run into roadblocks and disappointments when it comes to getting the education they deserve. Whether they are economically disadvantaged or come from underrepresented communities, a quality education can be a long shot. Unless, that is, they find someone to be an educational advocate for them and to give them an opportunity for success. For twenty-seven years, Buffalo Prep has been that advocate and has provided that opportunity for several thousand bright, driven Western New York kids.
At Buffalo Prep we offer summer-long and school-year programs to students of increasing diversity in grades five through twelve who demonstrate academic ability and a desire to get a first-rate college preparatory education. We partner with public and private schools to nurture the whole student, benefitting not only them, but the community as a whole. Students who complete the Middle School Prep program, the High School Prep program and the College Prep program position themselves very well for university, often with generous scholarships. Twenty-seven years after our founding, we know that Buffalo Prep graduates are part of the community fabric of a reborn Buffalo region, giving back to the succeeding generations. What goes around, comes around.
While we are proud of our successes, we know that it takes the whole Western New York village to keep Buffalo Prep healthy and strong. We count on educational institutions, educational professionals, corporate partners, volunteers, private donors and local communities for support. As you read this 2016 report, we hope you’ll be moved to join us as we echo the famous words of the Greek philosopher Diogenes, who said 2,500 years ago, “The foundation of every state is the education of its youth.”
Mary Ann Coulson, Board President, 2016 Marcia O’Neil-White, Executive Director

A New Home on the Horizon for Buffalo Prep: Allen Hall
The University at Buffalo is affirming its long-term commitment to Buffalo Prep with an incredible opportunity, offering Buffalo Prep a permanent home in Allen Hall on Main Street on the historic South Campus. Buffalo Prep’s new home at Allen Hall will welcome students and their families, be the anchor in an educational hub alongside innovative programs such as the Education Collaborative of WNY, and create a meeting place for faculty from its incredible partner schools throughout the region. Buffalo Prep has launched Prep for Tomorrow, a capital campaign chaired by Jock and Betsy Mitchell, to raise the $1.5 million needed for this exciting opportunity.

Alumni Spotlight
I attended Nichols School for high school and continued my studies at The State University of New York at Buffalo, where I earned my Bachelor in Arts degree cum laude in Political Science and African-American studies. After taking a year off from school, I continued my studies at SUNY Buffalo Law School.
During my time in law school, I served as a student ambassador, President of the Black Law Student’s Association, a member of the Environmental Law Journal, a member of the Frederick Douglass Moot Court Board, a member of SUNY Buffalo Law School’s Trial Team, and a student government class director.
I graduated SUNY Buffalo Law School this past May with my Juris Doctorate. At the awards convocation prior to the graduation ceremony, I was honored with four awards. I was inducted into the Order of the Barristers
for excellence in the skill of oral advocacy. I received the Law Alumni Association’s Gold Group Award, which is given to the student of the graduating class, who has demonstrated the best leadership while advancing the mission and reputation of the law school. I also received the Delores M. Denman Award from the Women’s Bar Association of Western New York and the Minority Bar Association of Western New York Commencement Award.
This month, I joined Connors LLP, a litigation firm, located in the Liberty Building in downtown Buffalo, as an Associate Attorney (pending New York State bar admission).
On August 26, 2016, I married Shawn Washington, Jr. in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. Our daughter, Ashanti, is in third grade at Nardin Academy. I look forward to participating in the Buffalo Prep mentorship program.
Buffalo Prep loves hearing from alumni and learning about their exciting accomplishments around the globe and right here in the community! Below, Sarah Washington (née Draper) tells us about her life since Buffalo Prep and graduating high school. Sarah began her journey with Buffalo Prep in seventh grade and is a 2004 High School Prep and 2008 Nichols School graduate.

Buffalo Prep is a place where I believe I have grown the most. It is a place where I have made some of my friends and a place I am proud to call home. With discipline, Prep children learn that they have to work for what they have and that nothing in life will ever be just handed to them. With integrity, Prep children are taught what way they should conduct themselves in order to gain the respect they deserve. For students, teachers, and parents, Prep students are given the constant support needed to learn, grow and achieve greatness in their futures. Even though Buffalo Prep is a place that stresses academic success, the program still knows how have fun. Buffalo Prep as a whole compares to no other whether it be because of the family atmosphere, the supportive teachers, or the students always willing to achieve more. Buffalo Prep shows kids that they are the future and that they need to become the change they want to see in the world.
Buffalo Prep provides kids like me with an opportunity to be academically challenged and to be a part of a team focused on the success of a quality education and future. It offers an advanced curriculum and helps students secure scholarships to great high schools and colleges. Buffalo Prep quenches my thirst for knowledge and prepares me for life’s challenges. I feel that if other kids are given the same opportunity, they would learn to take their education more seriously and learn that mistakes can be made and solutions can be found. I personally believe Buffalo Prep can have an impact on the future of society. Buffalo Prep understands how important it is to encourage its students to never give up and develop a character that is so important to life. This summer, we were able to participate in mock trials, and the mock presidential election this summer is one I’ll never forget. I am honored and humbled to have been elected Middle School Prep’s Summer 2016 President. Buffalo Prep can produce leaders that can help make the world a better place to live.

In 2013, I started to offer free tutoring services for students with special needs or financial difficulties at a public library. When I noticed that many of them lacked school essentials (like books and binders), I petitioned school officials, local charities, and even my school’s service clubs to help provide school supplies for these students. After receiving hesitant responses, I asked myself, “Why won’t somebody do something about this?”
Then I realized, I am somebody.
In 2014, I founded Third NonProfit, a student-run charity with a mission to “look out for the overlooked.” Our annual event is a mid-year school supplies drive. While there are a few charities that distribute school supplies in the summer, none do so in the winter. Since many students exhaust, misplace, or damage their school supplies by the end of the first semester, we wanted to hold our drive during the winter break so that we could ensure that students would be prepared the entire school year.
Instead of asking for donations, we chose to be resourceful by recycling empty ink cartridges and old electronics. We posted flyers and made announcements at various schools and businesses, establishing a “recycling network” in our town that involved the local college, University at Buffalo. We amassed “seed money” through our recycling efforts, and we used this money to purchase candy in bulk -- which we packaged and resold to make a profit. Our finances quickly grew.
By the end of the year, we had recycled over five hundred ink cartridges and old electronics, and raised over a thousand dollars. In January, we purchased school supplies from wholesalers as well as Office Depot. By February, we had distributed over a thousand of our school supplies, including thirty backpacks, fifty binders, and hundreds of pencil cases and writing utensils. We also gave away two brand new printers and five laptop computers. The majority of our supplies were sent to the Somali Bantu Project, a small local organization that runs a tutoring program for refugee children in Buffalo, New York.
Our work continues today -- we have approximately seven hundred dollars that we plan to invest in some electronic tablets that may help train younger students to use the computer.
Ting Gao, Oishei Scholar and College Prep student, Mt. St. Mary Academy ’16 and Yale ‘20 explains how she developed the idea to start her own nonprofit, Third NonProfit.
Ting with three of the computers she was able to buy with the money raised
from recycling old electronics. Ting donated these three computers to Prep
students who do not have computer access in their homes.
