V. Rev. Fr. Panteleimon and his family arrived in the United States on December 22,1946. His father served in the Diocese of Boston as a priest in the cities of Lewiston, MEand Holyoke, MA from 1946-1956. His father was then transferred to Mason City, IO,where Fr. Panteleimon graduated from high school and later entered Holy Cross seminaryin 1957, graduating in 1963. He was married to Mary Colitsas (of Blessed Memory) on

January 27, 1963. Soon thereafter, Fr. Panteleimon was ordained to the Holy Diaconate onMarch 3, 1963, the Sunday of Orthodoxy and to the Holy Priesthood on March 17, 1963, both by his pro-fessor, His Eminence Metropolitan Germanos of Hierapolis, in Albany, NY, his presvytera’s home city. Thispleased Fr. Panteleimon’s father immensely, since at that moment, four generations of priests continued inthe family.After graduation, Fr. Panteleimon was temporarily assigned to the Holy Trinity Cathedral in New York

City, and part time to the offices of the Archdiocese. In September, 1963, he was assigned to Sts. Constantineand Helen in Great Falls, MT, having the whole state of Montana as his parish. By God’s grace, he establishedtwo Mission Churches, in Butte and Missoula. In Great Falls on March 27, 1964, God blessed his marriagewith his first child, daughter Jo-Anne.

On December 26, 1964, Fr. Panteleimon received a letter of transfer to the parish of St. Basil in Troy,NY. Arriving in Troy on December 31, 1964, he celebrated the Feast Day of St. Basil the Great for his firstDivine Liturgy in his new parish. On September 27, 1976, God blessed the family with a second child, babyDemetrios. Having worked very hard in Troy, the membership had increased from 45 families, when thefamily arrived in 1964, to over two hundred families when they left in 1978. It was also during that time thatFr. Panteleimon increased his education in the Master Program at St. Vladimir’s Seminary, in Teleturgicsand Cannon Law.In January, 1978, he was assigned to the Prophet Elias Church in San Bernardino, CA. Fr. Panteleimon

and the family once again placed their efforts to good use at the new parish, increasing its membership andattendance. Presv. Mary, as usual, was his right and left hand in his ministry; working hard together,establishing a senior choir, of which she was the director. Presv. Mary also established a Jr. choir, youthgroup, dance group, and Greek school. They have two children Demetrios, who is married to Gloria and Jo-Anne who is married to Gary. They have been blessed with five grandsons: Paul Michael, Peter, Mark,Peter, and Anthony. Presbytera Mary fell asleep in the Lord on Holy Friday, 1999. Fr. Panteleimon continued his ministry at Prophet Elias and on July 28, 2001, Metropolitan Anthony

of San Francisco (of Blessed Memory) elevated him to Archimandrite. He remained in San Bernardinountil July 1, 2003, when he was assigned to Saint Spyridon in San Diego, CA until his retirement on July 1,2006. He then joined his family in New England.

REVEREND PROTOPRESBYTERFATHER JOHN G. MAHERAS

PRESIDING PRIEST OF ST. GEORGE, PITTSFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS

Father John Maheras, was born in Cleveland, Ohio and raised in Miami, Florida. Heentered Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, graduating in 1961. He was further educated at Halki Theological School, receiving the Certificate of Graduation in1962. He continued his education at the Institut Ecumenique in Bossey, Switzerland,

receiving the Licentiate diplome d’etudes approfondies and the Diplome d’etudes superieures spe-cialisees with honors. Appointed to the staff of the Archdiocese in 1963, Fr. John organized and directed the Department of

Youth and the Office of Ecumenism. During his ministry he developed the Youth Planbook and repre-sented the Archbishop at various conferences and meetings. On one of these trips in 1965, he metSusan Thomas of Syracuse, New York and married her soon thereafter. They had four daughters, Despina, Aspasia, Stefania, and Georgia, who with their husbands have given them nine grandchildren.Presbytera fell asleep in the Lord in 2011.Fr. John was ordained in the spring of 1966, being assigned to the Cathedral in New York City,

continuing in his position at the Archdiocese. Father has served in several parishes since then, offering histime and God-given talent of relating to children and youth through using origami as a teaching tool.His sermons are motivational, uplifting, didactic and thought provoking. Under the omophoron of His Eminence Methodios, Fr. John served as a Board Member of the

Massachusetts Council of Churches, ushering into the body our Metropolis. In his capacity as Ecumenical Officer for the Metropolis, he represented His Eminence in a diversity of venues andvoiced the concerns of our Holy Patriarchate and Orthodoxy. Among his many board positions, Fr. John has served on the board of the Clergy Brotherhood,

the Metropolitan Council, and others. He currently helps formulate the Choir Liturgical Guide-book, the Ecclesiastical Calendar of daily readings, having previously authored the Altar Boy Guide andPsalmic Verses for Choirs and Chanters.

ST. SOPHIA – NEW LONDON

TERRY MITCHELL

Terry Mitchell was raised in the Saint SophiaChurch. He attended Sunday School, was aGOYA member and officer and served as an

altar boy. After his stint in the navy, he returned to his homein Niantic, worked for his father in the grocery business andmarried Esther Macris, with whom he has four children, Lea,Joanne, Nancy and Peter. Following his marriage, hebegan to play an active role in guiding the progress at St.Sophia’s. He served on the Parish Council and held theoffices of Secretary, Treasurer, Vice-President and President;he was also chairman of the Building Committee, which in1973 comple ted what i s now the Jean G. VenetosHellenic Center. He was also instrumental in establishing theSt. Sophia Foundation Fund in 1982.During these years, Terry worked tirelessly in the

expansion of the facilities of St. Basil’s Academy inGarrison, New York, as well as serving on the board of HolyCross/Hellenic College, the Archdiocesan Council, the Metropolis Board and Board of St. Photios National Shrine.On March 23, 1986, he received the award of Archon fromArchbishop Iakovos in New York City, with the title “Depoutatos.” He is still serving on the board of HellenicCollege.In recent years , Terry has been chairman of the

Deve lopment Fund, which purchased the Va l las property, constructed the building that connects theHellenic Center and Vallas building, and expanded the kitchenand new handicap restrooms. He has also been the drivingforce behind the development of AHEPA Senior Housing,serving on the Executive Committee of AHEPA National andthe local Winthrop 250 AHEPA Chapter, which now has 250units in the New London area.In addition, Terry has been involved in civic organizations,

serving as Director of the Connecticut Retail Grocer’s Association, on the Board of Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Director of Southeastern Connecticut Chamber of Commerce,the Navy League of New London, on the Boards of severallocal banks, Eastern Connecticut Symphony, Pequot Char-itable Organization and Special Olympics, just to name a few.

HOLY TRINITY – NORWICH

CHARLES KOSTELOS

Charles "Chuck" Kostelos is the loving sonof Kathleen and the late James Kostelos.He is a graduate of Norwich Free Academy

and received his degree in Business Economics from Southern Connecticut State University. A life-long member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Nor-

wich, CT, he is raising his sons, James and William in Nor-wich where he has been the owner andoperator of Westgate Cleaners since 1982.Chuck has spent many years serving the Holy Trinity Com-munity, wearing a variety of hats along the way. An activemember of Parish Council for eight years, he served four ofthose years as President. He oversaw many projects andchanges throughout the years, accepting challenges with grace and leading his brothers andsisters in Christ with patience, professionalism, and compas-sion. Chuck is also a member and past President of AHEPA, hav-

ing served on the Building Committee for its elderly housing inNorwich. He has volunteered countless hours during the an-nual Holy Trinity food festival, beginning with the festival's in-ception in 1975. Chuck has helped plan, setup, prep, cook,cleanup and done everything in between over the course of theyears. He continues to secure the festival's permits and volun-teer wherever he is needed. Chuck continues to be an integral part of the church com-

munity. He uses his time, talents, and treasure to help hisparish in whatever way he can. When asked to lend a helpinghand, whether it be moving a pew or cleaning a grill, Chuck isready, willing, and happy to offer his assistance. We thankhim for all of his efforts and enthusiasm in serving Holy Trinity throughout the years. Mayour LORD bless Chuck and grant him many years!

HOLY TRINITY – LEWISTON

ANN ROBINSON

Ann Robinson lives a very active life serving the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox

Church in Lewiston, Maine and practicinglaw with Preti Flaherty Law in their Augusta, Maine office.Born in Lewiston, Maine, Ann graduated from Brown University and earned her law degree in 1988 at the Universityof Maine School Of Law, where she received the AmericanJurisprudence Award in Torts. She is listed in Wooward/White's The Best Lawyers in America.As a member of Holy Trinity since her youth, Ann attended

Greek School, performed Greek dances with the church’sdance troupe in local middle schools and high schools, andwas the President of the youth group, Maids of Athena. Shealso found time to sing in the choir.Her love of the church and leadership skills, have continued

on to her present-day life within the church. As an adult, Annhas served as past President of the Council and is regularlyinvolved in our annual Greek Festival working alongsideparishioners and co-leading Greek dances to anyone willingto learn the steps. Lately, Ann has been contributing to thechanting at Holy Trinity – especially during Holy Week.

Over the past few years, Ann has been the primary organizerand facilitator of our annual church retreat at the St. MethodiosFaith & Heritage Center in Contoocook, New Hampshire.The retreat has become a wonderful opportunity for spiritualrefreshment and growth for many at Holy Trinity.

STS. CONSTANTINE & HELEN– ANDOVER

ED GEORGE

Ed George is a long time and dedicatedsteward of the Sts. Constantine and Helen

Greek Orthodox Church in Andover, MA, and has served inmany leadership positions such as: directing the SundaySchool for many years; chairing many of the parish's GeneralAssemblies; and serving as Parish Council President for hisfull term of 6 years. Current ly , Ed i s the Fac i l i ta tor o f the Par i sh ' s

Country Day School Program. He also supervises the Mainte-nance Cleaning crew of the parish, and is the Hall Rental Coordinator. Additionally, he serves on the Parish's LongRange Planning and Stewardship Committees, as well ason the Metropolis Council, where he had been a presenter atmany Metropolis district parish leadership seminars. “BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE” - Ed George is not just an

administrator or committee member, he is a hands-on kind ofsteward, serving the church wherever and whenever the needarises. So we ask, “Where in the world is Ed?” The answer myfriends is the following - He is there helping at The midnightagape meal; he is there working at the Festival preparing food;he is there helping out at the Lenten Luncheon; he is therecleaning the church; he is there serving in the Altar duringweekday services; he is there making Prosoforo; and finally,he is there reading the Epistle.Ed George is an Orthodox Christian Churchman

Par-excellence! Thus, our parish is honored to have him as our2014 recipient of the Laity Award!

ST. ATHANASIUS THE GREAT -ARLINGTON

NICHOLAS DARRIS

As Saint Athanasius the Great Churchcelebrates its 50th Anniversary, it is fitting

to celebrate Nicholas Darris tonight for his decades of serviceand dedication for over 45 years. It was an honor to presentthe award to a pioneer and stalwart of our parish, who quietlyputs in the extra time necessary to carry out his diaconia to thechurch, always serving with humility. Nick, as he is referred to,served on several Parish Councils, as well as Parish CouncilPresident, Chairman of both the Elections Board and of Stew-

ardship. He is currently a Night Watchman. He and his wife,Aphrodite (past award recipient) are celebrating today withtheir 3 children and their families, including their 5 Grand-children. The aforementioned roles are just a few of the mul-tifarious ways that he serves God and his parish! AXIOS!

ANNUNCIATION CATHEDRAL –BOSTON

ALEX MAVRADIS

Alex Mavradis was born on the island ofCorfu on March 14, 1954. Adopted by

George and Helen Mavradis of Boston in 1959, he later becamea United States Citizen in March 1963 along with his siblingSpirithula (Deirdre).In the first year in the United States, Alex lived in Boston

and later moved to Newton. His family were members of theCathedral until the late 1960's, and in the late 1970's theyreturned to the Cathedral for their spiritual needs.Alex returned to the Cathedral in the 1990's as his mother,

Helen and aunt, Mary Bootzyvis were both members of theAnnunciation Cathedral, along with their parents, Christos andArhondula Bootzyvis, who were amongst the founders of thechurch.Having been a lifelong resident of Massachusetts, Alex

graduated from Boston State College in 1978 with a BAmajoring in Political Science and International Relations, alongwith a minor in Economics and Geology. His professionalcareer is in sales and sales management, but his passion is inphotography, being influenced by his father, George Mavradis.Alex pursues this passion as a professional free-lance photog-rapher in the photojournalistic style that extended to theGreek/American Community, business and non-profit organ-izations throughout New England.One of Alex’s proudest achievements was in helping create

a lasting photographic remembrance to the parish’s greatestgeneration of veterans, who have contributed so much -The Cathedral Veterans Album, a unique album, as far as isknown, is yet to be replicated by any other parish in the GreekOrthodox Faith, or for that matter in any denomination in thecontinental United States.Aside from photography, Alex enjoys the outdoors - coastal

activities, urban lifestyle and visits to the countryside.He has traveled extensively throughout the United Statesand Eastern Canada and is currently engaged to PatriciaMiller of Quincy..

Mr. George Tzanzos has been a very activeparishioner of St. John the Baptist since the

year 1967. He has a college degree majoring in political science and has made numerous contributions to our parish,serving on the board of directors under various capacities.Presently, he is a member of our Parish Council and devotes alot of his personal time helping to solve many problems in ourparish. He is always present during any sermon at St. JohnThe Baptist on Sundays and all other Holy days, a veryimportant quality to have for a committee member. Hence, heis highly recommended by all members of our Parish Councilfor this upcoming award.

ST. CATHERINE - BRAINTREE

ARTHUR SAKELLARIS

Arthur (Anargyros) Sake l lar i s i s adistinguished churchman, an Archon of theEcumenical Patriarchate, a member of the

Leadership 100, a philanthropist, and great benefactor of theSt. Catherine Church in Braintree, MA. Through his resoluteleadership as Parish Council President and Chairman ofthe Building Committee for many years, as well as his un-stinted generosity, the Parish was able to realize its long-held dream: the erection of a new multi-million dollarelegantly designed and magnificently decorated Byzantine-style church edifice and attractive Community Center. Throughhis unique services, fervent faith, and ardent love of the com-munity, Arthur helped, as no other, to secure the continuedgrowth of the Parish of St. Catherine. He continues to serveas Chairman of the Decorations Committee. Arthur was born and raised in the village of Vassara in the

Peloponnese, where he learned from his parents the power offaith, the importance of Church, the worth of family, and thevalue of education and hard work. He came to the UnitedStates in 1966 to pursue collegiate studies at NortheasternUniversity from where he earned a degree in electrical engineering. He also holds a certificate from theRaytheon Advanced Business Management Program andis a registered professional engineer in the Commonwealth ofMassachusetts.Through his innate abilities and hard work, Arthur has

accomplished much as a highly successful and honorable busi-nessman. His is a great success story, worthy of praise. Still, hehas never forgotten his roots or neglected his responsibilities tothe Church and the wider community. His generous spirit,modesty, and approachability have endeared him to many. A dedicated Christian and good family man, he is held in highesteem by all for his intelligence, prudence, trustworthiness,

fortitude, resoluteness, compassion, generosity, and ferventand sincere faith. Arthur and his wife Vasiliki have four grownchildren, Panagiotis, Areti, Demetrios, and Stavroula. Inrecognition of his unique services to the Parish of St. Catherine, his fellow-parishioners gratefully and proudlyproclaim him Parishioner of the Year.

ANNUNCIATION – BROCKTON

THALIA AFTOSMES

Thalia Aftosmes was chosen by theAnnunciat ion Parish in Brockton,Massachuset ts to rece ive the 2014

Ministry Award. She was born on the island of Mytiline in thevillage of Napi. She came to the United States in 1964 aftermarrying Charles Aftosmes. They lived in Dorchester for sixyears, and had two sons, Carl and Steven. In 1970, she and her family moved to Brockton and

became active members of the Annunciation Parish. While herchildren were still young, she taught church school for tenyears. To this day, she is an active member of the Philop-tochos Society and has served on the executive board in manycapacities! For the last thirty years, she can be found in thekitchen working non-stop for the annual food festival, either cooking or serving. Thalia is a person whose strongmoral character has enabled her to give unselfishly to herchurch and community.

STS. CONSTANTINE &HELEN - CAMBRIDGE

PETER & MARIA TRIMMIS

Peter Trimmis was born in a villagenamed Prasidaki, in Nomos Ilias,

located in the Peloponnese region of Greece. After he finishedelementary school, he went to Athens to attend electricalschool, where he got his degree and worked as an electricianuntil 1971. Maria Trimmis was born in the little village ofKakoureika, located at the top of a picturesque mountain inArkadia, also in the Peloponnese region of Greece. Afterattending elementary school, she also went to Athens and stud-ied at a seamstress school, where she got her degree as a seam-stress/fashion designer. Peter and Maria had met in Athens,both very young, but both with a strong willingness to workhard for their future. In 1970, soon after Maria met Peter, her father received the

wonderful opportunity to migrate his family to America towork and build a better future in the United States. In Boston,Maria worked as a seamstress at Priscilla of Boston’s WeddingBoutique. Then in 1971, with a very small suitcase, Peter decided to leave his family in Greece to join Maria in Boston toget married and start their life together, but he first had to gothrough Canada, where he resided for 6 months waiting for hisvisa. Once he arrived in Boston, Peter worked as a painter and

Group, which knits and distributes shawls to the needy andbaby blankets to children baptized in the church; a mem-ber of the Seniors of St George for 13 years; President for 8years and Secretary for 2 years; and also a member ofYarmouth Bowling Group for 12 years and Treasurer for 5years.

THE NATIVITY ASSUMPTIONOF THE VIRGIN MARY - COHASSET

SHARON COSTAS

Sharon Costas has been a devoted member of the Nativity-Assumption (Panagia) Parish in Cohasset, MA since 1983. Prior to this she and her familyattended St. Catherine’s in Quincy, MA.

Since she began attending the “Panagia” Parishin Cohasset she and her husband Chuck have faithfullyserved the parish in numerous ways. As a convert to Orthodoxy, Sharon has become a shining example to othersof what it is to be a true and faithful Orthodox Christian.She is active both in the parish and in the liturgical life of thechurch and cont inues to o f fer herse l f in church services to this day. For example, both Sharon and herhusband have served as youth/ GOYA advisors for overten years and have organized many youth related activities.She served as Philoptochos president for two years and organized several trips and retreats, including a trip to themuseum of Russian Icons in Clinton, MA.

Sharon has spent many years working quietly and diligently behind the scenes of the Panagia Parish’s annualfestival called, “The Taverna,” as well as for many variousother social events, youth activities and fund raisingevents. Each year, she devotes several hours fromLazarus Saturday through Holy Friday, preparing and dec-orating the church for Holy Week. Sharon’s diakonia doesnot stop there. In the past she has personally gone, withanother Philoptochos member, to the f l ower ex-change to personally buy the flowers for decoratingthe kouvouklion. Whether it be attending a Bible Study, or bringing Lenten

foods to feed the other workers during Holy Friday,Sharon is always willing to serve and assist in any way shecan. She is indeed a good and faithful Orthodox ChristianSteward who gives of her time, talent and treasure as a quiet anddedicated worker. We call to mind the words of our Lord,whenever we think of Sharon, “Well done good and faithfulservant!” (Matt 25:23) Sharon and Chuck Costas have two daughters, Kim and

Jennifer, and are loving grandparents of 4 beautiful grand-children, Sophia, Julia, Ryan and Zoe, in addition to hav-ing 5 blessed godchildren. We are truly blessed to have such a good role model at

our humble parish in Cohasset.

Maria decidedto be a stay at home mother, raising their three daughters, allof whom were baptized at Sts. Constantine and Helen Church.Together, they made a great team, working hard for the family, becoming very successful in building a painting/con-tracting business and investing in real estate. Peter and Maria share a special bond with Sts. Constantine

and Helen Church. The church offered them guidance and aplace where they were able to keep their values and traditionsclose at heart. They sent their children to attend both theSocrates Greek School and the Sunday School program at Sts.Constantine and Helen Church, where as adults, continue tobe active members with their own families. In the 1980’s, Peter served as an active board member for 2

years. For the last 3 plus decades, Maria has also been activein the church in multiple positions: 14 years as a PTA member, 6 years as the PTA Treasurer, 5 years as the PTAPresident, 17 years on the Scholarship Committee, and an active member in the Philoptochos. She also offers her con-tinuous support to the Church by donating her time in helpingwith various church events, including the annual Festival.Peter and Maria also support the church by always bringingtheir family to numerous fundraising events at church. Theyare very proud of all the great successes their daughters haveaccomplished and are also proud grandparents of four grand-children. Peter and Maria want to thank Rev. Fr. Asterios Gerostergios

for all his continued support and blessings he has bestowed onthe family.

and taught Sunday school. She left the Cape in 1955 to attendcollege, receiving a BA from Tufts University and an MBA fromBoston University. Marie then worked in the Boston area andthe south shore until she retired in 1999 from Analog Devices,where she held various positions in Graphic Services andCommunications for 32 years.Later Marie returned to the Cape and got involved in the

following activities and ministries at St. George Church: wasa member of the Parish Council for 4 years, 2 as Vice Presidentand 1 as President; a member of the Vision Committee,Narthex Project, By-Laws Committee, Kitchen/Cooler Project,Classrooms Upgrade Project, and Scholarship Committee; co-chair of the festival for 2 years; chair of the Pastry Booth for 6years; and participated in the food preparations and pastrybaking for 9 years; took responsibility for the Festival Directory, which was a 1-page flyer and grew it to a 32 pagebooklet with 12 pages of paid advertising which brought in$10,400 last year; an active member of Philoptochos Society;recording Secretary for 8 years; a member of the Prayer Shawl

Joan Fanous has been a member of St.George Greek Orthodox Church since 1980.A member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society,

Joan is also a member and treasurer of St. George’s ParentTeacher organization. She also teaches Sunday Schooland helps with the Greek Festival. Through her positiveattitude, willingness to do whatever is asked of her, and hercompassion for all people, Joan has been a gift from God forthe St. George Community.Joan Fanous was born in Wales, United Kingdom and

immigrated to America in 1976. She lives in Dartmouth withher husband Refaat Fanous, M.D. They have three children: ason Mathew and his wife, Amanda and their granddaughter,Ivy; a daughter Clare and her companion, Mosadi; and a son,Alexander and his wife, Sarah. Mrs. Fanous received hernursing degree in the United Kingdom and worked in aMedical office in America for 24 years.

Eleni Tsianakas is an active member atThe Assumption of the Virgin Mary Church

in Dracut MA. She has been a member of the church for 11years and has been serving as Vice-President for the LadiesPanagitsa Society for 6 years. As Vice-President for theLadies Panagitsa Society, Eleni has been instrumental inraising money for the church through many successful bakesales and holiday raffles. She is also genuinely passionateabout supporting the church community and buildingcomradery among the parish members. She takes pride inrecruiting new members to join and participate in an activechurch life, from her family and relatives to friends – new andold. For those of you who do not know Eleni, she can be

described as selfless, hardworking and passionate about herGreek heritage, culture and faith as one with the church. Eleniand her husband Ioannis have raised two wonderful children- Peter & Elena, who to this day are actively involved in theAssumption community largely because Eleni has instilled thecore values of the church & Orthodox culture as part of theirdaily lives from childhood. She is the grandmother of twoyoung children Elaina & Athan, both of whom she dearly lovesand continues to teach the valuable church beliefs and Greeklanguage. She has also been blessed with a beautiful nifoulaSophia and a wonderful Son-in-Law Peter, who both activelyparticipate in church life.Eleni not only has an outstanding commitment to The

Assumption of the Virgin Mary Church in Dracut, but moreimportantly to the parish and community. She is a wonderful

The Greek Orthodox Church of St. Luke inEast Longmeadow MA is proud to announce

their Laity Award recipient for 2014…Vicki LaRoche. Vicki hasbeen a member of St. Luke since its inception. She is a stew-ard of St. Luke in the truest sense of the word, as seen in herparticipation in the many ministries of the church over theyears.First and foremost, Vicki’s deep faith and love for the church

and the Orthodox Faith is evident. Along with attendingchurch services on a regular basis, she has been a participant in the Bible study program, certainly practicing her faith in words and deeds. As a member ofthe Philoptochos, Vicki has taken hold of a very specialministry, that of visiting the ill and shut-ins of thecommunity. Several times a year, she arrives at their place ofresidence with a smile, spending time with them and bringingappropriate goodies, which makes their day special.Vicki has also helped organize a knitting club at St Luke.

This ministry knits baby hats and blankets for the Bay StateMedical Center, as well as knitting prayer shawls for thosesuffering an illness or in need of emotional support.She has also been involved in the Taste of Greece, the largest

fund raising event at St. Luke’s. Since its inception, she hashelped out in many capacities, serving as co chairman over thelast four years. Vicki has served on the Endowment Fund Committee; has

done Loaves and Fishes with her family on a yearly basis; andhas offered her help to the various chair people of dinners, teas, cooking demos, etc. She is always there tolend a hand. She also has been a huge support to many of theparishioners who are in need of help, whether it be pickingsomeone up for church, helping someone move, or bring-ing someone to chemo sessions, her stewardship is endlessand serves as a great example for us all.

ST. DEMETRIOS CHURCH -FALL RIVER

KOSTA & MARIA SOURMAIDIS

Kosta and Maria Sourmaidis were born inGreece and after having immigrated to the

United States, became members of the St. Demetrios Churchin Fall River. The community welcomed them and made themfeel very much at home. They built their home in Adamsville,Rhode Island. They were married in 1978. They have two chil-dren, Demetrios and Katherine, and also two grandchildren,Constantinos and Maria. They are both active members of the

KATHERINE PETERS NOUSIS

Katherine Peters Nousis was born inFitchburg, MA on December 10, 1919. Shewas the daughter of immigrant parents Louis

and Antigone Peters. Katherine has been an active participantin her community since she was a young girl. Her fondestmemories are of Fr. John Michaelides and how muchhe influenced her love for her Greek heritage. By attendingGreek School and religious classes, she learned the values ofher Orthodox faith and took pride in her ethnic upbringing.Along with her brothers James and Peter, and her sister Bessie,Katherine was passionately involved in all aspects of the HolyTrinity Greek Orthodox Church in Fitchburg. In 1941 she married Spiros Nousis. They had three daugh-

ters Virginia, Barbara and Joanne. Spiro and Katherine workedvery hard to be incredible role models for their children. Theirwork ethic and faith were what they instilled in their family.Katherine was an active member of the Elpis Society, PTO andEastern Star. She took part in endless preparations for festivals and dinners prepared at the church. Spiro and Katherine were one of the first couples to open a

pizza house in the Fitchburg/Leominster area. Katherine'scountless hours in multiple stores that she opened was a testament to her strength, foresight and acumen as a businesswoman in the 60's and 70's, when women had a different rolein the family. She has left an amazing legacy to her threedaughters, eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren andfour great, great grandchildren. Katherine and her family thank the Holy Trinity Greek

Orthodox Church of Fitchburg for bestowing this memorablehonor upon her.

MARY VALVANIS

Mary Valvanis has been a member of theHoly Apostles Saints Peter and Paul Greek

Orthodox Church in Haverhill since 1955. Born in Greece, asa teenager she endured Italian and German occupations of hervillage during World War II and traveled to the United Statesin 1953 with her sister Vasiliky. After a couple years of toilingin a factory in Cambridge, Mass. and working in her uncle’srestaurant, she met the love of her life, Norman, of whom shewas the devoted wife for more than fifty years. Mary has twosons, John and George.

Mary has been a member of the Philoptochos Society Elpisfor almost 60 years. In her years, she was a member ofthe Church choir and an annual volunteer for the Church’sfestivals and bazaars. Where and whenever needed, Marypulled up her sleeves and stepped in. A devoted GreekOrthodox Christian, Mary has been a fixture in the HaverhillChurch, whose parishoners all adore.

ASSUMPTION - IPSWICH

MICHAEL BULGARIS

Michael Bulgaris has been a lifelong mem-ber of the Assumption of the Virgin MaryGreek Othodox Church of Ipswich, MA. He

has served as a parish council member for many years wheretwice he has held the position of President. Among the manycontributions and involvement in our church, Michael hasbeen a longtime faithful member of our choir for over 30 years,working tirelessly at our annual festival and can always becounted attending all church functions. ing as a nurse at Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester for 33years, where she and Tony first met almost 29 years ago (in1985 when she was an Intensive Care Unit nurse). She is cur-rently the coordinator of a Pulmonary Rehabilitation Programat the hospital.After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh School

of Medicine, Tony "matched" and completed his internalmedicine training at the Saint Vincent Hospital, subsequentlymoving to Burlington for additional training in PulmonaryMedicine at the Lahey Clinic. He found St. Nicholas throughthe yellow pages, mapping it to be geographically the closestGreek Orthodox Church to the Lahey Clinic.Judy and Tony were married by Father Paul Palesty in 1989

and have been faithful stewards of St. Nicholas ever since.After a few more moves, they settled in Boxboroughwhere they raised their 2 sons, Anthony (23) and George (21). Judy taught Sunday school for many years when her

children were younger and is currently teaching the Pre-K Sunday school class; coordinating the Health and WellnessMinistry; is involved in the Homeless Outreach Program; andis continuing her role as a member of the Executive Committee as Secretary on the Parish

Kennith and Alice Harkins have beendeeply involved for years in all aspects of the

community life of the St. George parish of Lowell. They rev-erently and gladly participate in the liturgical life of thechurch, in Christian witness and social functions,variousfund raisers, and parish outreach to Orthodox and non-Orthodox communicants alike. A convert to Orthodoxy andparish council member, Ken serves as a driver of a van forthe Chelmsford Senior Center, and for many years he workedfor the United Fund in Lawrence, Massachusetts, and as aliason for the union. An avid reader, Ken devotes his sparetime to constantly expanding his general knowledge aboutworld events.

JEFFREY RANDOLPH DAVIS

Jeffrey Randolph Davis was born andraised in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1969, he

moved to Lowell, MA to attend Lowell Technological Institute,now known as the University of Lowell, graduating in 1973 witha Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Management. Hehas been married for 39 years to Olga Natsios Davis. They arethe proud parents of two sons, Nicholas and Gregory. He iscurrently involved full-time at the Blue Angus Café in Dracut,MA, as one of four owners. Previously, he was employed byBoston Market as a District Manager and Stop and ShopSupermarkets as a Prepared Foods Merchandiser.From 1993 to 2001, Jeffrey was a Sunday School teacher at theHoly Trinity Church of Lowell, MA. He served on the ParishCouncil from 2008 to 2011. Since 2008, he has prepared andsupervised Sunday dinners following the Greek IndependenceDay festivities and the Palm Sunday Fish dinners at the Hellenic Cultural Center. Additionally, Jeffrey has volunteeredat the Lowell Folk Festival, which is celebrated annually, from2002 to the present. He is also a member of the Holy TrinityChurch Picnic Committee, in addition to being a member ofthe local AHEPA, Chapter 102 of Greater Lowell, MA.

Jeffrey is very honored and humbled to receive the Metropolis ofBoston Ministry Award and will strive to serve his belovedchurch and community for many more years to come.

It is with great pleasure that we honorArthur and Christine Faneros as this year’s recipients of theMetropolis of Boston Ministry Award. They have been lifelong,faithful members of our Transfiguration Church in Lowell. Arthurand Christine were born and raised at the Transfiguration andwere married there in 1971. They have two sons John andJason. Arthur has served the church in many capacities, including

Parish Council President and Vice President, as well as manyyears as a council member. He also served as co chairman ofthe Building Committee, which led to the dedication of theFamily Life Center in 2003. A fervent Grecian Festival volun-teer, Arthur has served as Food Chairman, Raffle Chairman,as well as general Festival Chairman. He is best known for histireless fundraising efforts on behalf of the parish, whether itbe selling raffle tickets, raising up front festival money, rais-ing money to build the building, and yes, even raising moneyto pay off the mortgage. No one can say no to Arthur. Christine has been a quiet, dedicated volunteer in many

aspects of parish life. She has been a choir member for manyyears and has taught Sunday School for over twenty five years.Christine participates in Bible Study Ministry and has been adedicated Philoptochos sister. Whether baking for a festival,selling pastry, decorating the Kouvouklion, serving as Corresponding Secretary of the Philoptochos Board, or coor-dinating the Visiting Angels Ministry, Christine’s quiet,sincere, compassionate nature makes her the model of a trueChristian. We thank Arthur and Christine for their love andservice to our parish.

BARBARA ORLANDO

Barbara Orlando has been a member of SaintGregory the Theologian since 1993. She first visited the Churchon Mother’s Day in its Sharon location. Her faith has drivenher to always be one involved and worshiping in everymanner. She served on the Parish Council for six years and wasRecording Secretary for 2 terms. Additionally, Barbara has beenactive in The Philoptochos, as a member since 2000 and servedas President of our Parish for a term from 2009-2010. Her lead-ership led to serving on the Metropolis Philoptochos from 2009-2013.

During her term, Barbara was the Liaison to the Saint Methodios Camp and Retreat Center, organized the annualPhiloptochos Retreat and served on the committee arranging theBiannual Philoptochos Luncheon. She continues to serve on theNational Board for Philoptochos and serves on The AutismCommittee and Chapter Challenge Committee.Saint Gregory's has been a wonderful part of Barbara’s life. Herchildren Caroline and Evan have both participated in SundaySchool and have spent many years at the Metropolis ofBoston Summer Camp. Caroline is a member of GOYA andEvan served as Co-Captain altar boy.Evan has grown into acamp counselor and volunteers with the Embracing Children Program. Caroline is following in her brothers footsteps and hasstarted volunteering this year at the winter camp.

SAINTS ANARGYROI - MARLBORO

DR. NICHOLAS KOFOS

Dr . N i c ho l a s Ko f o s i s a l i f e l ongMarlborough resident and member of Sts.

Anargyroi Church. He has spent multiple years on the ParishCouncil and was president from 2004-2011. As president, heoversaw the conception and construction of the $1.5 millionHellenic Hall. He has also been a member of AHEPA for 35years and is a past president of the Marlborough chapter. Nickis a tireless worker for the church and is heavily involved inmany ministries. He is a devout Orthodox Christian who embodies the idea of stewardship as time, talent andtreasure. As an optometrist with a practice in town, he isheavily involved in civic volunteerism and has significantlyraised the parish profile in the community. He and hiswife Cynthia, who have been married over 28 years, havethree children Monthe, Zachary and Leah. Like theirfather, all three graduated from Bates College and were stew-ards at their second home church in Lewiston, Maine whilealso being stewards of the Marlborough community.

ANNUNCIATION - NEWBURYPORT

MARIA ANDRIOTAKIS CONNOR

Maria’s invaluable service to her parish family rises out of her dedication to her faith and is inspired by her parents, Stella and Louis Andriotakis, and byher brother Jim. She also is supported by her husbandKevin and their three sons, Elias, Christopher and Dimitri. Because of her love for her church, Maria can be seen helpingin every aspect of church life. She has taught Sunday School for20 years, the last 10 years of which she has taught the pre-school and Kindergarten level - a true act of love! She has also

taught Greek school for both children and adults. Maria is anactive member of the Greek Ladies Aid Society for 8 years, andhas served as Treasurer and President. She is also active inevery fundraiser o f the church, spending hours atFestival workshops, and working diligently for the Golf Tournament, the Fashion Show, the Ladies’ Bazaar, and theArt Auction, as well as for the many other fundraisers and activities of the Church. Most recently, Maria spearheaded thecollection of money for new altar boy robes. Probably hermost important contribution is the inspiration she givesto her family - she can be seen at nearly every Church servicewith her family, and has been sending her sons now for 10years to the Metropolis Summer Camp.

ST. VASILIOS - PEABODY

DIANE VENIOS NIKOLA

Diane "Soula" Venios Nikola was born andraised in Peabody, Massachusetts. She attended Peabody Public Schools and grad-

uated high school in 1956. In the same year, she began work-ing at New England Telephone Company in Boston, and stayedwith the company through its many changes until her retire-ment in 1995. She was married to the late Edwin "Nick" Nikolaand has one daughter, Kirsten.Soula has been a lifelong member of St. Vasilios and has

truly given her time, talent and treasure. She served on theParish Council for 6 years and was dedicated to the bettermentof the church community. As a member of the functions committee, she was present with her strength and tirelesscommitment to each and every event hosted by St. Vasilios. In her 20 years with Philoptochos, Soula served as

Secretary and Co-President, helping coordinate annual eventsand organizing charitable drives for those in need within thechurch community and beyond. Fifteen years ago, she estab-lished a scholarship fund in her husband's name with fundsraised from golf tournaments in his memory, which continuesto be awarded each year. Soula also volunteered for SundaySchool and worked with St. Stephen's Ministries. Most recently, she was sole caretaker of her elder brother and sisteruntil a stroke last year left her physically unable to continue inthat role. She is most grateful to be honored by hercommunity and wishes she could be here with you all thisevening.

ST. NECTARIOS – ROSLINDALE

Haralambos "Bobby" Michaelidis hasbeen a member of the St. Nectarios Parish,

since its very beginning in 1974. His late father, Ioannis, wasone of the founders of the parish, whose legacy Bobby continues to follow by devoting his time, energy, and hard

work to the church.After graduating from Northeastern University, he married

his wife Elaine and they moved to Greece. They returned tothe United States with their three children, Yanni, Manoli, andAnna in 1998. Bobby, along with his family, immediatelybecame an active member, participating, serving, and supporting the parish in all of its ministries. As a parishioner,he would help with all events, including the festival andvarious dance functions. In 2000, he took on the responsi-bility of being the coach for the parish's JOY basketball team,a role he filled for a period of eight years.Bobby has had the honor of serving as an official mem-

ber of the parish council since the year 2000, havingserved as treasurer as well as president. You will see him inchurch every Sunday greeting the parishioners with a smile,providing assistance, and making sure everything is runningsmoothly. It is, however, the things that go unseen, thattruly support our church. For example, when someoneneeds access to the church, or function hall, Bobby will dropeverything to go and fulfill the needs of others. He has alwaysbeen there to meet and oversee, and or do the work when thereis a problem with the building. Themis has been the assistant treasurerfor the Parish Council for many years. She always serves at thePangari on Sundays and organizes the monthly Pangari schedule for Parish Council members. She always assists inall Church functions or services, and stays for hours at a timein the office, working and researching most of the issues thatour Church needs to review and resolve. She has been a teacher at Taxiarchae’sGreek school since 2005, teaching Greek language and cul-ture three times a week to children ages 6 to 11, and is greatlyloved by her young students. She has also served as a treasurer for Philoptochos. Mrs.

Stamos is known for her superb baking and cooking, and is avolunteer for the annual church festival that takes place inJune every year. She is a devoted steward of Taxiarchae andcontributes to church activities in any way she can. Mrs.Stamos’s dedication to her church is an inspiration to all, andher unshakable faith in the Lord is a shining example to all whoknow her.

Steve Damaskos is married to his wife,Kathy, and has three children, Lily,

Demetrios, and Stavros. Steve and his familylive in Westwood, Massachusetts and have been members ofthe Saint Demetrios Church for the past ten years. Steveworks as a senior art director, and has utilized those tal-ents and abilities when volunteering at the church. He cur-rently serves on the executive committee as thecommunications chairman. Steve was responsible for allcommunications regarding the building of our new church andfurnishings. He chaired the Thyranixia of our new SaintDemetrios Church last May and most recently chaired theGreek Fest. Steve joined Parish Council and became the chairman of

Ways & Means of Saint Demetrios. He is also heavily involvedin the sports ministry at church. He has been actively involvedin the Metropolis of Boston Youth Basketball League for threeyears, and has coached both the JOY and GOYA teams. Recently, Steve has coached the JOY team to winning back-

to-back championships and was recently recognized with theTeddy K Classic Coach of the Year Award.

Peter Constantine Lambropoulos (Taki)has been an integral part of our Annunciation

of the Virgin Mary community for the past decade. Over thistime period Taki has served the church in various capacities.He is now and has been an active member of the ParishCouncil, currently serving as vice president. He, also,

frequently takes on the responsibilities of the chanter and theduties of an altar acolyte whenever needed. In addition, Takihas found the time to co-chair the past three festivals and dothe cooking during many of our fundraising events, includingour monthly Taverna nights. His easy going personality andconcern for our community allows him to solicit help from ourparishioners and they readily accept his invitation. William Neidermyer’s spiritual journey tothe Orthodox Church was a long one. Beingraised and active in the Episcopal Church

for many years, Bill always felt that there was something miss-ing in his spiritual life. Active searching, exhaustive readingand praying led Bill to the Orthodox Church. After a period ofstudy, Bill was chrismated in the Orthodox Church in the Fallof 2006, taking the name Iakovos. Soon thereafter, Bill be-came very active in the parish by attending adult bible studyand lenten lecture classes and by helping with the parish's an-nual festival, in addition to other events. Since the summer of2008, Bill has been the reader and chanter for the parish,chanting at the Orthros and Divine Liturgy on Sundays, week-day services and many of the sacraments and most especiallyduring Holy Week.

Paul immigrated to Dover from a smallvillage near Kalamata in 1974. Upon hisarrival to the growing community of

Dover, he saw a population of Greek Orthodox peoplestruggling to support themselves and yet very committedto supporting their church. This inspired Paul to get involved for the past 40 years, giving his time, talent andtreasure to the Annunciation Church of Dover community.It has been Paul’s love for his faith and family that got

him involved from the beginning. Among Paul’s numer-ous diakonias are: serving on the Parish Council; chairingcommittees no one else would take; rallying crews when-ever needed for clearing trees, grilling souvlakia, scrub-bing pots and pans, or starting the fellowship hour coffeepot. No job needing to be done is ever overlooked by Paul. As a master baker, unknown by most, Paul offers yet an-

other form of service to the church. A few times a year, hebakes a large amount of exquisite prosphoras that wefreeze and use whenever we run out of fresh ones. One of the most import responsibilities that Paul has pro-vided our parish, is mentoring the youth, and he does thiswithout even knowing it. He is always sincerely concernedabout the “kids” in our parish, where they are and whatthey are accomplishing. One young parishioner wrote,“Paul cares a lot about the members of our church. Grow-ing up, it was always a big deal to me when someone atchurch would not only be able to recognize me, but alsoknow and actually care to ask what I was doing in school,or where I was working and then remember the answer thenext time we spoke. I think his dedication and commit-ment to our church should be recognized.”Paul lives in Dover with his wife Eleni and has a son

SUSAN KARALEKAS

Susan Karalekas was born in Portland,Maine, where she was raised in a GreekOrthodox family, attending Holy Trinity

Greek Orthodox Church. At age 13, her family moved toNeedham, MA, where they soon became active at St. DemetriosChurch, originally located in Newton and then later in Weston.Years later, Susan moved to Keene, NH and gradually becameinvolved with the St. George community, serving on the parishcouncil for six years and participating in numerous other volunteer activities, from hosting fellowship hour to assistingwith other church ministries where ever needed. Her profession in communications and writing inspired her

has been a GOYA advisor, Greek School dance teacher, andSunday School teacher. In addition, she has chaired theannual Dinner Dance and Spring Dance and co-chaired Greek-fest and the church’s 75th Anniversary Gala.Together, Arty and Stavroula have volunteered at countless

dinners, bazaars, dances, Philoptochos, and youth ministryevents. Especially active in youth ministry, they takepride in the programs they helped coordinate, such as trips tothe Metropolis Camp, Hellenic College, and the PhiloxeniaHouse. Arty and Stavroula are the proud parents of Demetri and

Christiana, who were were active in the Assumption GOYA andrecently graduated from college. Arty is a computer analystfor the US Department of Treasury. Stavroula worked in thefood service area for many years, and now volunteers as aGreek translator and at the Hellenic American University inAthens.

DOROTHY (DODO) CHAKAS

The Board of Directors of St. George GreekOrthodox Cathedral is pleased to announce

that the 2014 Metropolis Ministry Award recipient from ourparish is Dorothy (Dodo) Chakas. Dodo was born in Nashua,New Hampshire and raised in Franklin and Manchester, NH.She has a son, Steve, and a daughter, Elly.She jo ined the choir in 1962 and was the church

secretary from 1966 to 1969. The first year that Glendi began,Dodo volunteered to be in charge of the salad making crew—aposition she still holds today! When the church began a Summer Vacation Camp, Dodo volunteered to help in any wayshe could—something she still does today. A group of ladies-discussed cleaning the church before Easter once and Dodovolunteered to “gather the troops” and cleaning materials—she did it again this past Easter season. Every Tuesday morn-ing you can find her knitting with the “Workshop Ladies” asthey prepare for Glendi. She is currently the MembershipChair for the Anagennesis Ladies Society.There is only one thing Dodo won’t do and that is answer a

plea for help with a NO. She is always ready, willing, and ableto help. If she sees a need and hasn’t been asked, that’s okay,because she steps up and does what needs to be done. As aresult, the Saint George parish family proclaims her “Axia!”

STELLA BLOOM

Stella Bloom was born in Arcadia, Greece,in the Village of Stemnitsa, to Argyrios andKatherine Caralis and came to the US in

1955. When she moved to New Hampshire in 1983, she beganattending St. Philip Church; ever since, she has been known as

a dedicated, faithful and helpful servant of our ministries andprograms. First and foremost, she—through her involvement with our

Agape Ladies Society—is a great steward of our sanctuary,seeing to its upkeep, improvement and beautification with truelove and reverence. So often, when one of the holy vesselsneeds refinishing or it’s time for fresh flowers, Stella is there tomake it all happen, in her unassuming way. Further, her dedication to those in need, within our parish and beyond,is worthy of emulation. Stella’s service to our annual festival is also remarkable.

She is not only at the forefront of cooking and organiza-tion, but is also a willing and open-hearted teacher; sharingher talents, and our traditions, with others, so that ouryounger generations may also serve and share over time. Infact, it is difficult to think of a more influential and energeticparishioner—she is simply our “go to” person on so many levels, and we are deeply grateful for her presence and service.Inspired by her faith and the influence of her beloved husbandHyman (of blessed memory), we hope and pray that shewill continue to serve at St. Philip for years to come.

Both Arthur and Sarah Katsanos have beenactive and committed to the Parish of St.Vasilios in Newport, NH through the years.

Arthur has served on the Parish Council. He has been instru-mental in the maintenance and upkeep of all church propertiesthroughout the years. He gladly assists with all the fundrais-ing functions and helps to raise money for multiple functionsat the church. During our summer Apple Pie Fair picnic, hetakes charge and is the master chef. Both he and Sarah vol-unteer at parish functions including luncheons, fundraisers,picnics, etc. Sarah has been an active member of the LadiesAuxiliary and assists with fundraising and various projects. Asa parish, we know that we can always count on Arthur andSarah to help and take the lead on different projects and bringthem to successful completion. Paul Petrou lives his Greek name of "Polydoros," “for he is one of the most generous people I know,” stated Fr Andrew

George of the Annunciation Church in Cranston, RI, in sub-mitting his selection to the Metropolis. He is a philanthropicperson towards virtually every cause, his home is always openand warm through his gracious hospitality that he and his wifeLiza offer to so many people, all the time. Paul even conductshis own special drive at Christmas to assist parishioners inneed. He has been generous to this parish in his professional

career in electrical & refrigeration, through donating his services to the parish, originally by being one of two donors ofthe A/C unit in the church, and its installation, but over some40 years, its maintenance as well, at no charge to the parish.He does the same with all the electrical needs of our Greek Festival, wiring our entire parking lot, all the tents, booths andportable appliances. Born and raised in Askas village in Cyprus in 1943, at age

12 Paul entered the Technical Institute of Cyprus in Nicosia.In 1958, he won a scholarship from the Greek government andattended the Sividanidios Technical School in Athens, gradu-ating in 1962. There he met and married his wife, now of 49years. They immigrated to Canada in 1966 and then came toCranston in 1969. During his first 5 years in RI, he worked forone of the largest electrical firms in the state (Coken Electric),while also attending and graduating from New England Tech.In 1974, he started his own business in electrical and refriger-ation service, servicing most of the Greek owned restaurants inRI, retiring 5 years ago.

In preparing his biography, Paul wrote....."Upon immi-grating to Canada, and then to the United States, I realized thatthe only way to keep my Orthodox religion, my heritage, andthe Greek Language was through the Greek Orthodox Church,so I started participating in many programs of the Church andalso got involved with organizations that offer Greek Cultural

and Educational programs. I attended Church regularly withmy family, and my children attended Sunday School and GreekSchool. My son Petros, after graduating as an electrical engi-neer and working for 8 years, left his job to attend HellenicCollege/Holy Cross, where he received a degree in Theology.My son Demetrios, with the help of Fr. Andrew and Fr. Manny,presents some of the Bible studies and marriage counselingprograms in our parish."Paul has served on the parish council back in the 1970s and

served on council committees such as the school committee,stewardship committee in it's initial formative years; and theGreek Festival committee guiding it along from a 1 day to a 2day event and then finally in its present form, to a 3 day gath-ering. He also is a member of Ahepa, a founding member andtreasurer of the Hellenic Cultural Society of South East NewEngland, which through the years helped the Greek Schools ofRI's 3 parishes and presented many cultural and educationprograms for adults. Similar was his involvement in the StateHeritage Sub-committee of the RI State House that awardedfinancial grants to the Greek Schools.

Additionally, Paul was a founding member and treasurerof the RI Chapter of the American Hellenic Institute PAC, andin 1988 received the award of excellence of that organization.Continuing with his love of everything Greek, Paul is also afounding member and treasurer of the Hellenic Society PaideiaRI Chapter, which at the present time is in the process of build-ing a Greek Studies Center at the University of RI.

Paul’s love for his island of birth was manifested greatlyduring the time of crisis for Cyprus in 1974 with the invasionthat occurred and he became the treasurer of the ArchdioceseCyprus Relief Fund in RI, collecting funds and raising aware-ness for which he was honored in 1992 by both the Cyprus Min-istry of Defense and His Grace Bishop Methodios. Yes indeed, Polydoros Petrou on many levels has been and

continues to be generous with his time, talent and treasurewithin the life of his parish and the greater Church, as well asall causes of concern and interest of people of Greek heritage!

ST. SPYRIDON - NEWPORT

PENELOPE HIOTAS

Penelope (Penny) Hiotas, an active stew-ard, was chosen by the St. Spyridon GreekOrthodox Church in Newport, RI as its 2014

recipient of the Metropolis Laity Award. Penny should begiven the name “the reluctant honoree,” because each time shehad been approached by the parish to be so honored, she hadhumbly declined. This year, however, the parish did NOT giveher an opportunity to agree or disagree! Penny is active in numerous church ministries, including

faithfully singing in the choir, assisting and serving on thechurch soup kitchen ministry, helping with the church’s various administrative ministries (including helping withchurch mailings and other office duties), as well as havingserved on the Parish Council for several years. She has also

Elaine Sioras is a life-long member ofAssumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church inPawtucket, RI, where she has selflessly served our church forover 35 years. She self-proclaims that her church holds a spe-cial place in her life and all that she does is because of her greatlove for it. Elaine’s church involvement began in SundaySchool, Greek School, GOYA and, as an original dance troupemember, performing at our festivals, the Heinz Auditoriumand the 1976 Bristol July 4th Parade. Elaine’s major endeavor for the past 12 years has been bak-

ing our Easter/Christmas bread. Her expert organizationalskills have put her at the helm of our bread-baking teamfor the last 8 years. Elaine has always volunteered priorto and during our 3-day Annual Festival and, for manyyears, prepared with her Dad, his delectable rice puddingrecipe, which is a festival favorite. She plans her vacation timejust to be available for these events. Elaine has been a mem-ber of our Philoptochos for 25 years, a board member for 20years and Treasurer for 14 years. She helps organize andparticipates in all Philoptochos activities. Elaine is also apast Parish Council member. She helps out with the annualmaking of our Palm Crosses.Elaine’s life exemplifies Christian outreach by fundraising

for the March of Dimes, RI Heart Association, Alzheimer’s RIand Muscular Dystrophy RI. She is devoted to her family andis a caring godmother of two. Elaine is tireless in serving ourchurch and strives for excellence in everything that she does.

Paul and Maria Michaelides were born and raised inThessaloniki Greece. Paul immigrated to the United Stateswith his family to finish high school and pursue a higher edu-cation. He graduated from Brighton High school and fromNortheastern University in MA with a BS degree in ElectricalEngineering.Paul and Maria got married in Thessaloniki, Greece. They

moved to Burlington Vermont in 1974 where Paul startedwork as an Electrical Engineer at the IBM CorporationSemiconductor facility. He continued his education whileworking for IBM and received his Masters degree inElectrical Engineering, from the University of Vermont,while Maria focused on staying home and raising their two children. Paul retired from IBM as a Project manager after 33years of service. During all the years in Vermont, Paul andMaria remained very active in the Greek community. Paul was elected and served on the parish council for many

years at the Dormition of the Mother of God Greek OrthodoxChurch in Burlington, Vermont, serving as the ParishCouncil president for two terms. Maria was active in thechurch choir and in the early years taught Greek to thechildren in the community. From the beginning she wasvery active in the Vermont Philoptochos chapter, held variousofficer positions and recently served as the president of theVermont chapter for two terms.Paul and Maria are now retired and are enjoying time spent

with their friends, their 2 children and their families, includingtheir 4 grand children, who are the joy of their lives. They stillhave a lot of family in Greece and enjoy their annual lengthyvisits to Thessaloniki. Fellowship, the Hellenic Society, and club Ultimate Frisbee are his favorite activities. He studies Chemistry and Theology, hop-ing to pursue a career in Global Health ormedicine.

CELLOIST JOHN STATHOPOULOS will perform BBaacchh SSuuiittee 11,, SSaarraabbaannddee..John is a rising junior at Boston College. He is pursuing a major in music, a minor in chemistry and intends on attending medical

school after completing his undergraduate studies. John is a cellist and holds a leadership position in the Boston College SymphonyOrchestra. In addition, he serves as a co-president of the Orthodox Christian Fellowship chapter of Boston College. John cherishes thememories and the friendships he has developed at his home church Holy Apostles in Westchester Illinois. He has served as an altarboy for the past ten years and is working towards a learning of Byzantine Music.

Marga has immersed herself in political reporting, covering municipal, state and

national elections, including the First-in-the-Nation New Hampshire Primary; as well as the primaries inFlorida, Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont and Rhode Island as a reporter for the national news outlet, Fox News Radio. Marga alsospent 6 years working in Boston for WRKO radio.

Over the years, Marga has earned numerous honors and awards for her broadcast work from the Associated Press and boththe Massachusetts and New Hampshire Association of Broadcasters, including Best Newscast, Best Spot News, and Best Election Coverage.Marga is a New Hampshire native who grew up in Manchester. She has been an active member of her parish, St. George's
