JILL CORNELL TARTER

For time beyond measure, humans have looked up to the sky and asked: "Are we alone? What would it mean if we knew the answer?" For all but a sliver of human existence, we cou ld do no more than wonder. However, seizing the opportunities of technological advances unimaginable to earlier generations, you have made it your life 's work to seek our answer - in a message from the stars.

You were adamantly drawn to the sciences early in your educat ion, supported by your fami ly even as you were active ly discouraged by teachers. As an engineering undergraduate at Cornell Unive rsity , you were often the only woman in the classroom. Undaunted, you were drawn to male-dominated fields of astronomy and then radio astronomy, earni ng your master's and Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley . Your inte rests soo n connected you with likeminded colleagues curious to search what has been cal led a "cos mic haystack " for signals from an advanced c ivi lization seek ing us.

A pathbreaker, you served as a Project Scientist for NASA's SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) program. When governme ntal funding was sca rce or even terminated , you learned how to stitch together funding sources and helped co mpose the charter for the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California. In your career spa nning over fou r decades, you have conducted numerous observational programs at radio observatories worldwide and worked to design and build California's Allen Telescope Array. Scouring mil lions of radio fre quencie s and analyzing resulting data, there have been a

few moments of breath-catching excitement when a captured signal was not immediate ly diagnosed as "earth noise." Efforts have not paid off - yet - and you are determined that the search cont inues .

Your work was int roduced to the pub lic when actor Jod ie Foste r portrayed a character insp ired by you in the 1997 film Contact, from the book by your friend Carl Sagan . Throughout your career, you have proudly served as an inspirationa l role model for generations of women pursuing careers in the sciences. Retirin g in 20 12, you are now Emeritus Cha ir for SETI Research at the SETI Institute, lecturing worldwide on behalf of expansion of resear ch and continued fund ing for SETI, and fo r strong fundamental science education for all.

In recognition of your achievements, you were named one of Time's 25 Most Influential People in Space, a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and were awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by Wome n in Aerospace. Upon winning the Ted Prize in 2009, your wish was to draw others into SETI through innovat ive ideas like open sourc ing so that "citizen scientists" could partic ipate in the search. Moreover , the Astero id 74824 Tarter was named in your honor.

For your steadfast dedication and enthusiasm in the quest to listen in on the stars and to magn ify our understanding of what it means to be human beings, the Trustee s of the University of Pennsy lvania are honored and p leased to con fer upon you, Jill Cornell Tart er, th e degr ee of Doctor of Sciences, honoris causa.
