Getting about by bike Welcome to the Hyndburn Cycle Map. Hyndburn has a growing network of off-road cycle routes. With more cycle lanes and 20mph zones it is becoming safer to cycle on road too. Hyndburn Greenway (Route 6) Hyndburn’s great traffic free route links Blackburn, Accrington and Baxenden. It is part of national cycle route 6 which will eventually link London with Carlisle Baxenden to Accrington From Baxenden follow the cycle path on the old railway through the lovely Woodnook Valley into Accrington Accrington Causeway Cross the lake into Accrington Town Centre on the unique causeway. The red pillars used to carry the railway across the lake. The lake supplied the Globe Works which was the largest textile machinery works in the world. The Bullough family owned the Works, a fleet of Rolls Royces, a private yacht and the Scottish Isle of Rum. Accrington to Church Follow the cycle path along the railway to Church Church to Rishton Discover the heart of rural Hyndburn. From Church Kirk take the cycle path through open countryside to rejoin the canal south of Rishton. There are great views of Pendle Hill from the path. Rishton to Blackburn From Rishton follow the canal into Blackburn. There are links into Blackburn Town Centre and Witton Park. Links to Rossendale There are plans to extend Route 6 south into Rossendale, linking to Haslingden, Ramsbottom and Bury. Other Routes Rishton to Great Harwood From the canal towpath at Rishton follow the cycle path on the old railway to Great Harwood. The railway was built to avoid congestion at Accrington Railway Station. It is hoped to extend the cycle path over Martholme Viadvct to Padiham and Burnley Canal towpath Much of the canal towpath in Hyndburn has been upgraded to allow use by cyclists Huncoat Greenway When complete the new Greenway will link the north side of Accrington with Huncoat. Schools Links There are off road cycle paths serving St Christopher’s Church of England High School and Accrington Academy on Queens Road. Both Norden Sports College and Hollins Technology College are close to the Hyndburn Greenway. Links to Accrington and Rossendale College For the College, leave the Greenway at Nuttall St and follow Nuttall St and Wellington St to the College. From the north you can use side streets to get to the college. Some Hyndburn cycle routes follow paths shared with walkers and horses. 1. Cycle slowly past pedestrians, giving them plenty of room. 2. On downhill sections watch your speed. You will be surprised how quickly you can pick up speed. 3. Do not assume other users can hear or see you. Use your bell or say ‘hello’ and ‘thank you’. 4. You are legally allowed to cycle on cycle paths and bridleways, but not on footpaths. 5. Take extra care when passing horses. On bridleways you should give way to them. 6. When cycling with children keep a close eye on them. 7. On canal towpaths follow the Waterway Code. Ride at a sensible speed. Be very careful at bridges. Dismount if necessary. Blackburn Weavers’ Wheel The Weavers Wheel is a new circular cycle route round Blackburn linking to Witton Park. The route should be fully open in 2017. Whats you bike type? Racing Bike...These have drop handle bars and are lightweight. Mountain Bikes...Have sturdy frames and knobbly tyres to give more grip on muddy tracks. Hybrid bikes...Great for around town, combining the sturdiness of mountain bikes with the lightweight of racing bikes.Electric bikes...Can help you get up hills. A great cyclist comes from Hyndburn... Alan Ramsbottom Way in Great Harwood is named after a local man who was a top Tour de France cyclist in the 1960s. Mountain Biking Ride on the Kings Highway to Haslingden, head to the West Pennine Moors or take the bridleway to Whalley. Rossendale’s Adrenaline Gateway mountain bike area is nearby.
