    Hyman Scholarship for Rural MedicineTerms and Conditions

    Value: $10,000 per annum

    Number Awarded: 2

    Duration: 5 years

    Study Mode: Full-time, on-campus

    Introduction

    The University Of New England (UNE) has established undergraduate scholarships

    to support students who have a record of academic achievement, and have been

    involved in leadership positions in school and the community. The Aberbaldie

    Foundation has been providing education bursaries for rural students since 1979

    and has now joined with UNE to offer the Hyman Scholarship for Rural Medicine.

    Commencing in 2008, the Bachelor of Medicine (a jointly delivered undergraduate

    program with the University of Newcastle) comprises a five year degree of

    international standing which prepares students to practice in urban, regional, rural,

    and remote Australia.

    This scholarship is available to school leavers commencing full-time, on-campus

    studies at the UNE in the Bachelor of Medicine in 2014.

    School leaver recipients of the Hyman Scholarship for Rural Medicine are expected

    to reside in one of the UNE residences for at least the first year.

    The recipient of a Hyman Scholarship for Rural Medicine is expected seek and gain

    employment in rural, regional or remote New South Wales for 2 years after

    completing their degree.

    Conditions

    Undergraduate scholarship holders may not hold more than one UNEscholarship if the combined value is greater than three thousand fivehundred dollars ($3,500) per annum.

    It is expected that, school leaver recipients, of a Hyman Scholarship forRural Medicine will reside in one of the UNE residences for at least thefirst year.

    The scholarship shall be administered by and awarded on therecommendation of the Undergraduate Scholarships Committee.

    There will be no commitment by the University to employ the recipient.

    The scholarship is intended for the nominated undergraduate degree andmay not be deferred or transferred without the written approval of theChair of the Undergraduate Scholarships Committee in consultation withthe trustees of the Aberbaldie Foundation.

    The scholarship is payable directly to the recipients bank account in twoinstalments (end April and end August) with the intention that the fundsshould be allocated to accommodation and course resources.

    Continuation of the scholarship is subject to satisfactory academicprogress:

    o The scholarship shall comprise a cash payment of ten thousanddollars ($10,000) annually for the maximum of five years,conditional upon the recipient successfully completing all units.

    o It is expected that the recipient will be enrolled full-time, on-campus at the UNE and complete the course in the minimumperiod of candidature applicable to the course.

    Recipients will be required to submit brief reports (by 30th April and 30th

    September each year) on their progress with their studies andinvolvement in sporting, cultural and community activities, as well asparticipation in University life and a contribution to rural medicine. Aftercompletion of the course the recipient is required to submit a brief reportto the Trustees of the Aberbaldie Foundation on their employmentarrangements in rural, regional, or remote New South Wales.

    The recipient of a Hyman Scholarship for Rural Medicine is expected seekand gain employment in Regional NSW for 2 years after completing theirdegree.

    Additional conditions may apply to some scholarships and may vary byscholarship (e.g. specific conditions on eligibility, voluntary workrequirements and payment schedules). When offers are made for thesescholarships, the recipient will be made aware of specific conditions thatapply.

    Any request to vary the conditions of the scholarship must be made inwriting and will be determined at the discretion of the UndergraduateScholarships Committee.

    The recipient while completing the course will be required to attend theannual scholarships presentation evening, if they are invited to do so, andmay be asked to participate in activities to promote the HymanScholarship in Rural Medicine, including public speaking, donor liaison,

    media interviews, and photographs.

    Acceptance of Conditions

    In accepting a Hyman Scholarship for Rural Medicine, the recipientacknowledges that he/she is accepting the terms and conditions outlinedabove.

    Failure to meet the requirements of these terms and conditions may leadto the termination of the scholarship.
