Hutchesons’ Grammar School 2013 - 2014Commonwealth Games Celebrations

Hutchie 2014At the end of last term the Primary School held two amazing Mini Games days in honour of Glasgow 2014. Primary children in P4-7 moved round fifteen events in the sunshine at Auldhouse. There were many enjoyable events including swimming, rugby and shooting with Nerf guns. Helpers from S3 led the events and made everything run smoothly. The Infant classes also experienced their very own special sporting challenges in the grounds of Kingarth Street where they tried a variety of sports such as lawn bowls, hockey and hurdles. All the pupils showed great commitment, athleticism and team spirit.

Lawn Bowls Robert Conway

On Friday 28th of March the primary children enjoyed meeting para-athlete Robert Conway who is the current World Champion at Bowls! Robert is a visually impaired bowler, and he explained that he can only see a few yards ahead. Visually impaired bowlers have a ‘Director’, a person who helps them with the direction of the bowl and the position of the jack. If a visually impaired bowler wins a medal, the Director also receives one!

Hockey Sam Judge and Morag McLellan

Sam Judge and Morag McLellan visited us to talk about their Hockey careers. We were very excited as they are both FPs and had been taught in the Assembly Hall and gym at Kingarth Street! As we have so many children playing hockey, we had some knowledgeable questions such as; how fast does the hockey ball travel when you hit it and which teams are you scared of playing? The answer to the latter was interesting - they were not scared of any team but knew they would have to try their best and persevere. This is a very good message for all of us to apply to school! They had a tour of the school to see all the changes made since they left and particularly enjoyed seeing the gym!

Mountain-biking Lee Craigie

Apart from being one of the best female riders in the UK, Lee has a passion for the development of the sport. She has also been key in the development of Cycletherapy which uses a combination of mountain bike skills coaching and bike maintenance to raise the self-esteem of children who cannot cope with mainstream education.

Wrestling Andrew Cairns and Craig McKenna

Two wrestlers, Andrew Cairns and Craig McKenna, coaches at Dumbarton Wrestling Club, visited during May. There were lots of squeals and groans as they lifted one another and then crashed to the floor! Many boys in the audience were keen wrestling fans and recognised the moves! Pupils discovered that some of the moves are similar to those in Judo and that you don’t need to be tall to be a wrestler! After the demonstration one of the children was heard to comment that the wrestlers should audition for the next Incredible Hulk film!!

Weightlifting Louise Mather and Colette Will

Two Scottish weightlifters, Colette Will and Louise Mather, demonstrated both the ‘snatch’ and ‘clean and jerk’ lifts. Colette used to be a gymnast and Louise won the UK’s Strongest Woman title. Pupils learned that athletes compete against others with the same body weight as their own and both girls lift 16 stones.

There was a huge range of exciting events at Kingarth Street in the run-up to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow!The School hosted a series of unique Glasgow 2014 assemblies at Kingarth Street with a variety of athletes showcasing their sports, ranging from bowling through to wrestling! As well as the athletes highlighted on this page, we were visited by the following: Kimberley and Louise Renicks who demonstrated Judo, both of whom won gold medals; Squash players Alan Clyne and Frania Gillen-Buchert; Natalie Milne, Triathlete.We were also delighted by a visit from FP Marion (Maz) Bryden who had a significant role in the Games as Production Manager for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.Finally, Kingarth Street had the great honour of welcoming the Chairman of the Organising Committee, Lord Smith of Kelvin, who cut the ribbon at the P1-3 Mini Commonwealth Games Fun Day.

The #hutchiebaton was bubbling over with excitement in

the hands of P5G. It ‘floated’ a whopping 2.5km. Well done!

To complete our picture of Clyde, the

#hutchiebaton needs to travel 190km. It’s 25km per body part. Current

dist = 158.12km

Who would think P6M, aka Team Pakistan,

could travel so far by piggyback with the

#hutchiebaton! Dist = 2km

Marcus walked 3kms at the Hermitage (in the rain) with

our #hutchiebaton, bringing our total

distance to 122kms

Chloe and her classmates in P1E limbo’ed nearly

half a km with the #hutchiebaton. How

is that possible?! Amazing!

Formula 1 watch out! Jamie and P4W

travelled an impressive 2.32km with the #hutchiebaton. Very well done

Matthew took the #hutchiebaton 42km on his bike! New total

= 80.6km

Findlay, Kate, Angus, Harris and Ginevra ran 3km round Newlands

distance = 93.6km

Athletes’ Village Art Competition A big thank you to all 162 pupils from Primary 1 right the way up to Secondary 5 who submitted poster designs for the Athletes’ Village Art Competition. We received some outstanding artwork: fantastically colourful portraits of Clyde, skilfully drawn athletes, creative interpretations of all the 17 sports, 70 nations and some of Glasgow’s amazing venues. All the entries were of a tremendously high standard, but Catriona Reid (then S3) and Noah Bateman (then P6) submitted artwork which was judged as ‘Outstanding’ by our panel.

The 16 winners have had their work displayed in the athletes’ village during Glasgow 2014, and the School has received several lovely letters and postcards in response.

Pupils have also been enjoying taking up their very own Hutchie Baton Challenge, which was a great success on Twitter under the hashtag #hutchiebaton, to take the School baton an astounding distance of 190km.Starter’s Orders !

On Bank Holiday Monday, Erica took

the #hutchiebaton on a 10km trot on her new

pony, Smurf! New total = 28.9km

Montrose House took the #hutchiebaton 5.3 km today = a total of

39.6 km. How far can it go?

Last night, Mariam took the #hutchiebaton 0.8km around Bothwell Castle. Total distance =

94.4km

Miranda took the #hutchiebaton 4km on her bike. With the help

of Argyll House the total distance = 102km.

studying Wales & ran & hurdled 2kms with the #hutchiebaton.

the way!

P2S were transformed into a Class of

Clydes. They ran nearly 1km with the
