Let’s face it – as much as we love Corvettes, they are not great winter cars. For many of us, our Corvettes are not our daily drivers. When winter comes around, it is time to park these fair-weather rides and dream about spring.

There are some possible long term downsides to storing a car for a long time without driving it. Our Corvette started leaking hydraulic fluid from the clutch cylinder with only 36,000 miles. This was not the first problem I have had from storing a car. Our 1968 Karman Ghia convertible had a brake caliper that started dragging after a few winters of non use. Seals in the engine, transmission and other moving parts can start to harden after long periods of sitting. Hmmm…I think my body does the same thing.

I will say that we do not drive our Corvette in the snow, but I try to get it out every couple of weeks if the streets are clear. The problem is that if you are only doing short trips, say 5 miles or less, this will build up combustion products including water in the oil. You need to go at least 10 miles to get the oil good and hot before you start the next "resting" cycle.

It is good to start it up every week or two and let it get to operating temperature, even if it never leaves the garage. If you don’t take it out, put it in gear and step on the brakes a few times to keep the moving parts engaged as much as possible. A Battery Tender on the battery while it's parked would be a good idea if this is practical for you.

If you do park it for the winter, you should do maintenance and change oil, as if you were driving it. Changing the oil before long periods of storage keeps the corrosive contaminates from sitting in your engine all winter. Keeping the gas tank topped up is important to prevent the corrosion if you have a metal tank. Fuel stabilizer is a good idea to keep the gas from getting old. It isn't really needed as long as you will use the vehicle on a somewhat regular basis and keep it topped up. I like to add it all year around because it may take us a month to use up a full tank of gas.

The other area to look out for is to keep the tires fully inflated, or even a slightly higher pressure than normal if

the car is going to sit for a long period of time. The higher pressure prevents the tires from flat spotting. I would only do this if you are going to be letting it sit for an extended time.

As far as our fluid leak, we did have to get our clutch cylinders (master and slave) replaced and the system flushed. In fact, we received help from one of our contributors. After several estimates ranging from $750 to over $900, I called Certified Transmission to see if they worked on manual transmissions. I have taken our other cars there for automatic transmission service and been very pleased.

Their estimate was just over $500, and our Cornhusker Corvette Club membership gave us an additional 10% discount. They only use factory parts when available, and they have an A+ rating BBB.

They did an excellent job, and I would highly recommend them. They are so friendly and customer focused..

A week after it was done, I received a hand written thank you from Michelle Cauffman, the manager of the center at 135th and Q street. I love that personal touch.

We plan to keep driving our Corvette all winter this year and every year when the weather permits. It does have a heater, and it sure takes away those winter doldrums.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT%Jerry Koraleski

Happy Holidays everyone,

Last month’s General Meeting had to have broken an attendance record. What a crowd! Attendance this past

year has been on the rise, and I thank you for that. Keep up the positive attitude.

We did some things really well this year and some things, well let’s say need a little tune up. With BOD elections behind us, we can move forward in a

positive fun direction. The current BOD is deserving of a big round of applause. They all worked hard at doing their very best for you! Thank You!

The Holiday Season is here. Enjoy the moment, enjoy your family and friends and don’t forget to enjoy your Corvette friends.

Going back to early this year I listened to numerous concerns in regards to the Awards Banquet. They all centered on having a nicer banquet. We have done so! This is where you come in and support this event. Details will be in the newsletter and an invitation will be sent to you. PLEASE RESPOND IN A POSITIVE MANNER.

Thank you and save the wave, Jerry

All I Want for Christmas is a New CorvetteBy Bi# Cashe#

T”was the night before Christmas, when all through the houseNot a creature was stirring, we were pretty well soused. The Corvette was stored in the garage with care,In hopes that warm weather soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,While visions of side pipes danced in their heads. And mamma and I were feeling so fine,We had just finished another bottle of wine.

When out on the lawn there arose such a roar,I sprang from the bed to open the door.Away to the window I flew like a flash,Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The sound of loud mufflers and power galoreGave the feeling of 600 horsepower or more. When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,But a classic Corvette and a guy with a beer.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,I knew in a moment this drunk was St Nick.He revved up his motor and stepped on the gas,And I yelled to the guy, “Get off of my grass!”

That’s when his beautiful car came in view,And I said to myself, “I must get one too”.It was covered with flames, all painted Torch Red,And I knew in that moment, I had nothing to dread.

He was dressed all in red, with a big Corvette sign,And a bundle of gifts that I hoped would be mine. There were wheels, tires and accessories galoreAnd I thought to myself, “I must have some more”.

Then he asked me that question that everyone fears“Have you been a really good person this year?”Then I thought to myself, “Maybe not quite so good.”I cheated on my taxes and ate too much food.

I drank too much beer, and had too much wineAnd I stayed up too late, most of the time.My diet was shot and my blood pressure highI partied too much and ate too much pie.

But in spite of these things, and all of the rest,I look back at Santa and said, “I’ve been the best!”He gave me a wink, with a feeling of glee,And he said, “I think you are fibbing to me”.

“I have my big list of who’s naughty or nice,And you’ve been so bad; you are on the list twice”Santa was pretty unhappy with me,There would be no new Z06 under my tree.

There was really not much more that I could say,I just hoped that tomorrow would be a better day.All I could do was give him a kiss,And hope that my neighbors didn’t see this.

He sprang to his car, brought the motor alive,And put his Corvette into four wheel drive. But I heard him exclaim, as he drove out of sight,"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!"

I sat up in bed and I started to screamAnd that’s when I realized this was all a bad dream.I looked at the calendar, still three months to goBefore we would finally be done with the snow.

I thought of the snow birds, how nice it must beTo cruise with the top down in January. As I looked at the snow, I said, “One thing is clear. We’ll be spending our Christmas someplace warmer next year!”
