built up from a charity system providing only basic education for the poor, into our current system that offers everyone the opportunity to achieve. Elsewhere in the world this is not available, with even basic education being seen as a dream for most of the world.
Education is often seen as being the preserve of schools and universities but these institutions are served by an army of volunteers as well as the paid professionals who educate our young. Governors, readers and those who serve and support PTAs all add to the education opportunities that are available in this country.
We can often overlook the other education opportunities that are also available. Some of these are provided through activity clubs, the uniformed organisations and youth clubs, each providing an opportunity to learn more about our world and each other. There are also less formal opportunities; even a walk through our beautiful countryside provides opportunities to engage our curiosity and learn something new.
In the busyness of our daily lives we need to maintain a curiosity that allows us to continue to learn for there is so much we do not yet know. The current focus on World War One and the D Day landings is showing us how much more we could know about them; how much is revealed in the history of individuals.
As the generation that took part in World War Two is dying, what memories are being lost because of questions we have not asked? How much do we know of what our parents did when they were young? What have our children learnt that we do not know? How much more could we know about our friends?
Learning is a continual process and can be an informal process. What more could you learn over a cup of tea with family, friends or neighbours? How much richer might our lives be if we shared more in our community? The opportunities are there if we choose to take them!
Steven and Margaret Cox, Hurst Green Evangelical Church

What are you learning?
In this country our children are fortunate to have unlimited access to education. While they may not always see it that way, it is a right and a privilege that has been won over many years. Starting with the National Schools 200 years ago our education system has been

The Reverend Wendy Harvey
On Sunday 1 June, we at St John’s Church said goodbye to the Revd Wendy Harvey after nearly five years with us. Goodness me, how we shall miss her! Her ministry to us has been all embracing. Apart from Sunday and weekday services when her bright and energetic approach swept through us like a fresh breeze, she introduced and ran a Meditation Group and a Film Club and developed a ministry at Windmill Manor. She was highly innovative not only in worship but in other ways too, such as in organising a one-off away day, youth event and quiet days.
She worked with the Methodist and Evangelical Free Churches in Hurst Green creating Healing Services and other joint ventures. AND she always had time to listen to people and to care for them. All this was in addition to the demanding pastoral work she spends the rest of her time doing, working as a chaplain. Wendy is a unique, talented and lovely person, and St Andrew’s, Limpsfield Chart is indeed lucky to have her as their new Priest in Charge. Thank you Wendy for all you have taught us, and all the challenges you have laid before us in your gentle way. We wish you well in your future ministry: may it be richly blessed.

Tandridge Arts
Creativity and the arts are widely recognised as not just interesting hobbies, but of benefit to overall health and wellbeing. Joining an art class offers the chance to meet new people in a friendly environment, learn new skills and be creative.
Our next weekend workshops are hand building in pottery, which takes place on Saturday 5 and Saturday 12 July. Explore working in clay with Jane Lynch and Christine Harwood. Experiment with hand building techniques such as press moulds, slabs or coils. Construction as well as decorative techniques will be included. Workshops can be attended as a single session, or better still come to both to develop and refine your creations! Spaces are strictly limited so early booking is advised. Discounts are available for those attending both sessions.
Tandridge Trust has an extensive art programme for adults, which includes 2 daytime watercolour courses, lead by artist Lynda Clark, and weekend workshops covering a variety of subjects from pottery, to lino printing, to life drawing. Regular classes are held at Tandridge Leisure Centre, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, new members are always welcome in these friendly classes, which are open to adults of all ages. Weekend workshops take place on Saturdays.
For information about the special weekend workshops programme check our website www.tandridgetrust.co.uk, see local press or pick up a leaflet in one of our centres.

Imagine what £1billion could buy over a year; 60,000 new nurses or 2.5 million more hospital beds perhaps? These would benefit us
all, and are just two examples of what this country could afford if we stopped expecting other people to clear up our litter for us!
When I was at school in the 1950s anyone who dropped litter was called a "litter-bug" and was shamed. Now we have a real litter problem. It is a dirty habit which is costing us dearly, because we all pay through taxes for cleaning up our streets and countryside, money which could be much better spent elsewhere. Particular scourges are cigarette butts, chewing gum, fast food wrappings and drinks containers.
Sue Fox raised this issue in the May Hurst Green News, dismayed by the litter she picks up on her short local walks. How do we solve this problem, she asks? I belong to Zilch.org.uk, a community dedicated to cleaning up the UK. Like Sue I regularly litter pick around Hurst Green. But we don't want to spend time clearing up after others' dirty habits.
It's not just about litter looking unsightly. It's about poisoning our soil and ultimately our seas and ourselves with harmful chemicals in litter; a sorry legacy to leave for our children and grandchildren. We need a mix of education, community involvement and personal responsibility. Laws can only go so far. Next year a charge will be introduced in England for plastic bags. Meanwhile 10 billion more bags will be given out, many of which will end up as litter. So let's educate our children and lead by our own example. Let's support the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England in their quest for a levy on drinks containers. Let's pledge to help clean up our beautiful country and keep it that way.
