Project Description
The Smith River, on California’s north coast, is one of the crown jewels in the National Wild and Scenic River System. Undammed and free-flowing from its headwaters to the Pacific Ocean, the Smith represents one of the last wholly intact wild river systems. The Smith River National Area (SRNRA) includes over 300 river miles that flow from the diverse conifer forests of the Siskiyou Mountains to the ancient redwoods along the river’s lower reaches. This project will complete protection of this nationally recognized watershed within the SRNRA –- the only designated “Salmon Stronghold” in California. The 5,360 acre Agnew Tract has seventeen parcels and lies entirely within the SRNRA. The Tract covers portions of three streams: Hurdygurdy Creek, Little Jones Creek, and the Siskiyou Fork of the Smith, all designated as Wild and Scenic Rivers. These streams serve as refugia and vital spawning habitat for coho and Chinook salmon, steelhead, and coastal cutthroat trout, and provide stable flows of cold, clean water to the main forks of the Smith River. The Agnew Tract is the largest private in-holding remaining within the SRNRA. Other few remaining private parcels may be acquired as available in the SRNRA. This acquisition will achieve several goals outlined in the 2007-2012 Forest Service Strategic Plan, and meet the provisions of the 1990 Smith River NRA Act by allowing the USFS to: 1) restore and maintain healthy watersheds and diverse habitats in the tract, 2) protect forests in the tract from conversion to other uses, and 3) improve the quality and availability of outdoor recreation experiences by providing public access and recreation opportunities. The Smith River watershed's scenic beauty, renowned anadromous fishery, exceptional water quality, and abundant wildlife combine with its ready accessibility to offer exceptional opportunities for a wide range of recreational activities including wilderness, water sports, fishing, hunting, camping, and sightseeing. Acquisition of the tract is identified in the Forest Land and Resource Mgt. Plan as a high priority (Appendix O) and by the SRNRA Act. Smith River Alliance is offering to sell the property as funding becomes available.
O&M Cost Estimated “start up” costs: $5,000 Estimated annual maintenance: $5,000 USDA Goal Strategic Goal 2: Ensure our National Forests...are conserved, restored, and made more
resilient to climate change, while enhancing our water resources by: protecting designated Wild and Scenic Rivers, the NRA, and Wilderness from conversion; and reducing the threat to the water resources of the Smith River watershed from damage by wildfire and erosion.
