Modelling a hairdryerThis tutorial takes you through the steps required to create a model of ahairdryer, using morphing functionality to create the handle grip, nozzleand diffuser.

You will create the model from the wireframe geometry shown below:

Starting up PowerSHAPEDouble-click the PowerSHAPE icon on your desktop to start upPowerSHAPE.In PowerSHAPE's graphics window, you can see the menus and toolsprovided.

Important: Are you in modelling mode?From the top menu bar, click Application. Deselect any options that areticked.

Importing a DGK file1. Click Import .

2. Move to the drive and folder where the tutorial files are stored:C:\dcam\product\powershapeXXXX\file\examples\Tutorials

where XXXX is the version number of PowerSHAPE and C is thedrive on which PowerSHAPE is installed.

3. Select hair_dryer.dgk.4. Click Open.

5. Click Resize to Fit .

Saving your modelWe advise you to save your model at regular intervals, preferably every15 minutes.

1. From the top menu bar, click File.2. Click Save As… .

3. In the Model Name text box, type:Hairdryer model

4. Click Save.If the filename Hairdryer model is already used, type adifferent name.

5. In future, click Save .

Turning off surfaces using levelsThe Level toolbar is displayed on the left side of the graphics window.

In this hairdryer model, the wireframe we want to work on next is storedon level 5.

1. Click 1, 2, 3, 4, 10, 11, 12, 13 to turn off the other levels.

Only the wireframe remains on the screen.2. Click ISO 1 .

Making the workplane active1. Click on the workplane with the right mouse button.

The Workplane pop-up window is displayed.

2. Click Active.

3. Click away from the wireframe to deselect it.

Creating a surface of revolution1. From the status bar at the bottom of the screen, click X axis.

Mirroring the surface in the XY plane1. Click the surface just created.

2. Click Edit toolbar . The Edit toolbar is displayed

3. Click Mirror/symmetrise object . More tools are displayed:4. Click Mirror in XY .

Notice the surface is duplicated to create a handle.5. Click Select .6. Click Quick select all wireframes .

7. From the top menu bar, click View.8. Click Blank selected. The selected wireframe disappears.

Editing a surface1. Click the surface shown below:

2. Click the longitudinal shown below:

3. From the top menu bar, click Edit.4. Click Surface Edits Toolbar.

The Surface Edits toolbar is displayed.

Extending a surface1. Click the surface shown below:

2. Click Point Limit from the Edit toolbar.3. Click on the curve at the open end of the hairdryer handle.

4. Hold down the left mouse button and drag the curve past the bluewireframe as shown below:

5. Release the mouse button.

6. Click Select .7. Click away from the model to deselect it.

Creating a surface extrusion1. From the status bar at the bottom of the screen, click Z axis .

Creating a surface fillet on the handle1. Click the left mouse button and drag a box to select the surfaces

shown below.

Creating a solid from the surfaces1. Click Select .2. Click Quick select all surfaces and solids .

3. Click Solid .4. Click Create solid from selected surfaces .

5. Click No in the Query dialogue box.

Adding a thickness to the solid1. Double click on the solid

The browser opens and the solid feature tree is displayed.

Creating a second surface extrusion1. Click the pale coloured curve shown below:

It changes colour to show it is selected.

2. From the Edit toolbar, click Move/copy object .3. In the status bar at the bottom of the screen, type 0 0 -18.

4. Press Enter.

5. Click Surfaces .6. Click Extrusion .

Creating a solid boolean intersection1. Click on the created surface to select it.2. Click Feature .3. Click Intersect the solid… .

4. Only part of the handle is now displayed.

5. Make sure the model is still selected. If not, click to select it asshown below:

Creating a composite curve1. Click the dark curve on the handle.

2. From the top menu bar, click View.3. Click Blank Selected. The curve is no longer displayed.4. Click Zoom to box Mode .5. Click the left mouse button and drag a box, as shown below:

5. Click Curve .6. Click Create a Composite Curve .

The Composite Curve toolbar is displayed.

7. From the Composite Curve toolbar, click Define start point.

8. Click the curve on the junction shown below:

Repointing a composite curve1. Whilst the composite curve is still selected, click View.2. Click Blank Except. Only the composite curve is displayed on

the screen.

3. Click Edit.4. Click Curve Edits Toolbar.

The Curve Edits toolbar is displayed.

5. Click Turn Point Labels on/off . Points on the curve aredisplayed.

6. Click Repoint curve .The Repoint curve dialogue box is displayed.

7. Change the Number of points in range to 9.8. Click Accept.

More points on the curve are displayed for the range 1 - 9.

Creating the handle grip shape1. Click Copy .2. Click Paste . This pastes a copy on top of the image.3. Hold down the shift key and click on all the even points.

4. Type 2 in the status bar at the bottom of the screen.

5. Press Enter.
