President’s Welcome

Dear Readers,

The Hungarian University Sport has concluded a successful year. In the academic year 2013-2014 we witnessed the most success-ful Winter Universiade ever from home aspect, as our short-track competitors grabbed one gold, silver and bronze medal each. At the 11 World University Championships (WUC) held in 2014 altog-ether 29 medals went to Hungarian athletes, out of them 13 were gold. The rowers of Széchenyi István University wrote sport history, when they collected the first gold medal for our country at the European Universities Games in Rotterdam. And thanks to the sport diplomacy the President of the International University Sports Fede-ration held negotiations in Hungary on the possible organisation of the Universiade and Olympic Games, and specific consultations are running since on eventually bidding for the FISU Forum in 2018.

The 11th World University Wrestling Championships held in Pécs attended by 280 univers-ity and college wrestlers from 25 nations earned recognition on international scene as well and brought nice Hungarian successes. The Hungarian College and University Cham-pionships (HCUC) in 38 sports were attended by 36 higher educational establishments with more than 3,000 university and college students representing 96 percent of the students. The SportPoint Program (SPP) held in conjunction with HUSF and the National Student Union of Hungary (NSUH) reached this year already more than twelve thousand students, which for the first time ever promoted sporting activity in the camps of first-year students. Merely within a year the number of the SPP leisure sport events doubled to half a thousand. As a result of the development there are twenty-four sport offices on higher educational level in operation today in the country.

The cooperation among the spectacular team sports can be taken as a role model. In basketball the only championship-system HCUC ran with a record number of participants with corporate income tax allowance subsidy of almost forty million HUF, while the water-polo players attracted about one thousand spectators already for the second time. The development of the local institutional football championships was completed with Tele-kom – Hungarian Football Federation support of eleven million HUF.

Thanks to the work of the HUSF Secretariat the accomplishment of the programmes in the Alfréd Hajós Plan is successfully running – with the assistance of our partners. It is not easy to list those who have engaged in the issue of university sport: the establishments of higher education and our members, national sport federations and their sport experts, the Ministry of Human Capacities and the Hungarian Olympic Committee, NSUH, Hungarian Basketball Federation, Hungarian Water Polo Federation, Telekom, TandT Sport Llc, Adi-das Budapest Llc, Bay Zoltán Applied Research Community Non Profit Llc and Budapest Business School. It is hoped next year we jointly manage with renewed force to actively involve even more university and college students in the sport life of the institutes of higher education. We believe with healthier and sportier intellectuals Hungary can be turned happier and stronger.

International Events

The passed academic year will surely get in the Hungarian Sport Almanac as the Hungarian univers-ity sport team produced the most successful ap-pearance ever at the Winter Universiade last Christ-mas in Trentino.

The men’s short track relay with Viktor Knoch (BKF), Csaba Burján (ELTE), Bence Oláh (SE) and Bence Béres (SE) captured the gold medal, while Bernadett Heidum, student at BKF finished in runner-up position on 1500 m. The women’s relay team with Szandra Lajtos (SZTE), Andrea Keszler (ÓE), Bernadett Heidum (BKF) and Zsófia Kónya (BGF) stepped on the third place of the podium with excellent time. In addition to the medals there were several Top 10 positions earned by our athletes. Andrea Keszler, Bence Béres and Benedek Kis finished 5th, Konrád Nagy was 6th in speed skating on 10,000 m with a new Hungarian record. Anna Berecz fi-

nished 7th in alpine skiing overall and 8th in downhill. The Turóczi-Ma-jor ice dance pair landed in the 10th position. Hungary finished

20th on the medal table ahead of nations stronger in winter sports like Norway and the Netherlands.

In 2014 FISU staged World University Championships in more than thirty sports. Out of them Hungary was rep-resented at 13 events, our young competitors returned home with 29 medals on total (13 gold, 8 silver and 8 bronze). Never before in the Hungarian sport history captured Hungarian students more medals at WUC’s than this year.

From the WUC Triathlon in April in Brazil Zsófia Kovács (ELTE) returned home with a gold. Edina Kotsis (EKF) grab-

bed the bronze at WUC Taekwondo in June in Hohhot/Chi-na, while Barbara Ducz (SE) finished on the 5th position. At the

end of June the WUC Karate was held in Bar, Montenegro with 7 young Hungarian talents; out of them Tadissi Yves Martial (NKE) beca-

me world champion, while András Virág (ÓE) got the bronze medal. At the University of Pécs the Hungarian Wrestling Federation and HUSF organised the 11th WUC Wrestling early July, where further 10 medals were added to the Hungarian tally. Gold medals went to Emese Barka and Tamás Lőrincz (SE), Krisztián Jäger (BME), László Szabó (BKF), Iván Németh (ÁVF), Bálint Lám (ÓE), while Gábor Madarasi (EKF), Mihály Szabó (Edutus), Zsombor Gulyás (SE) and Richárd Csercsics (SE) finished third. Sándor Tőzsér (SE) and János Tősi (EKF) finished in the 5th position. Simultaneously with the World University Wrestling Championships Jelenia Gora, Poland hosted the WUC Cycling, where Barbara Benkó (SE) took two silver medals and a 6th place, while Gábor Fejes (SZIE) a 4th and 6th place. The Hungarian youngsters collected three silver and two bronze medals at the 6th WUC Canoe Sprint Championship in Minsk/Belarus. The Hungarian team got the best results in women K4 events. Both on K-4 200 m and K-4 500 m the silver medal went

to Alexandra Horváth (SZTE), Ágnes Szabó (BCE), Fanni Simán (ELTE) and the many-time European champion, 4th placed Anita Hagymási (SE). The latter together with her sister, Réka Hagymási (SE), world champion, silver medallist at European Championships showed

excellent performance in double as well, on 500 m they collected the bronze, on 200 m the silver medal, thus she was the most success-

ful competitor of the Hungarian team. László Kovács, student of SZTE, bronze medallist of 2013 Universiade on K4 1000m, Máté Szomolányi (SE), Kristóf Bán (SZTE) and Gábor Bogár (SZIE) got a bronze medal for our male kayakers on K-4 200m. Out of the Olympic events the Hungarians proved strong on K-2 200m as well, where Máté Szomolányi and Kristóf Bán finished 4th. The best canoe performance was shown by András Bodonyi (SE) and Viktor Viola (EKF) world champion, earlier silver medallist at European

Championships. They finished in the 4th po-sition both on C-2 1000m and 500m. WUC

Rowing in September ended with excel-lent results, and several medals, as our

competitors collected two golds and two silvers. Bendegúz Pétervári-Molnár (BCE) made

a start-finish win with an advantage of more than 4 se-conds in the final of the single sculls. The second gold for the Hungarians came from Béla Simon (NYME) and Adrián Juhász (SZE) in the coxless double. Dániel Matyasovszki (SZTE) earned the first silver for the Hungarian team, while the second came by Gábor Csepregi (NKE) and Péter Galambos (ÓE), they proved their talent in the lightweight double scull.

At the 5th WUC Shooting our country was rep-resented by 6 young university students, who

already earned serious results earlier, and retur-ned home with excellent placing. In addition to the silver of the women’s team in the composition of Adrienn Nemes (SE), Sára Babicz (ELTE), Nikoletta Mihalkó (KRE) and team captain Györgyi Plichta – in 25 m pistol race -, they also finished in the 5th position in the 10 m air pistol race.

Besides the team event places Adrienn Nemes (SE) was 4th in 10 m air pistol and 5th in 25 m pistol events. The men

were also successful as in the trap team event Imre Romano Mario (University of Milan), András Szollár (PE) and István Gá-

bor Zsarnay (BCE) finished in the 5th position. Moreover András Szollár finished in the 6th position thus earning a point in the double

trap event. WUC Weightlifting was held in Thailand in December, the year ended with a worthy sport result, as Péter Nagy (Edutus) won both in snatch and clean and jerk, thus earned the gold in total as well.

For the first time after three decades the President of the International University Sports Federation (FISU), the former President of the French University Sports Federation, Professor Emeritus of the Descartes University of Paris, Mr Claude-Louis Gallien arrived to Hungary as guest of honour to the conference ‘Hungary in the University Sport Movement’ organised in conjunction by HUSF and the Hungarian Society of Sport Science (HSSS) on the occasion of the 80th birthday of dr Róbert Frenkl, former President of both organisations.

At the conference with about 130 participants held in Hepp Ferenc Room of the University of Physical Education Claude-Louis Gallien, FISU President talked about the development of the international university sport movement and specifically about the outstanding results and remarkable role of the Hungarian university sport. After the event the FISU Pre-sident met with Pál Schmitt, former President of Hungary, HOC Honorary President, Zsolt Borkai, HOC President and István Simicskó, State secretary, Gallien by the State Secretary for Sport as well.

Among the topics the possibility of hosting the Olympic Games in Buda-pest and connected thereto the staging of the Universiade oc-

cupied a special place. Referring to the negotiations the FISU President stated he saw a good chance that Hungary could

play host to the Universiade in 2023 (according to the ori-ginal plans, Budapest would be ready to host the Games in 2019) and to the Summer Olympic Games in 2024. The FISU President himself works hard for this, as ‘the Univers-iade can be an addition to the Olympics’ – stated the French sport leader. The sport diplomat also briefed to have consultations with Mr Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in order to

create cooperation, synergy in the organisation of the Uni-versiades and Olympics. As to sport diplomacy an excellent

sporting backing was offered to the extremely remarkable negotiations with view to Hungary by the support, which is de-

voted to sport and especially the sport expertise, how the Budapest bid for the 2019 Universiade was prepared.

The European University Sports Association (EUSA) held the European Universities Games for the second time. Rotter-dam hosted the European multi-sport event, where our students collected the first Hungarian gold medal in the history of the Games. Everybody on the perfectly prepared teams of Széchenyi István University and the Budapest University of Technology and Econo-mics returned home with a medal. The first Hungarian gold was won by Adrián Juhász (SZE) and Béla Simon

(NYME), students in Győr, in men’s coxless double. The

second victory of the Hun-garian team came in the European classic, the uni-versity regatta of eights. The Hungarian students co-vered the 2 km distance in 5:40.09 min with an advantage of 3,5 seconds ahead of such crews like Norway, Croatia and England with excellent times. In the lightweight double sculls the BME students,

Bence Tamás and Gergely Simon captured the first sil-ver in Rotterdam for the Hungarian team. The only female

Hungarian participant, Virág Dohovics (SZE) also finished in a runner-up spot in the lightweight single scull and well deserved

the silver medal.

National Events of 2013/14

The Hungarian College and University Championships (HCUC) rep-resenting the highest level of the domestic university sport life were held in 38 sports on total in the past academic year. At HCUC you can witness the contest between the elite athletes studying in high education and the students with talent in sports, thus the establishments can match each other in competition sport as well. The best championships are popularized by well-known athletes, university and sport managers, under the attention with

the local and national media.

In the passed period the ‘Way of Knowledge’ half-marathon held already for the 14th time with a far bigger participation than earlier

recorded an outstanding success, among the participants besides the students, professors were dr Ágoston Szél, Rector of the Semmelweis University, dr István Simicskó, State Secretary for Sports and Erik Siklós, HOC Director for Marketing and Com-munication. The popularity of the Swimming HCUC is well reflected that even Olympic, Paralympic and Universiade medallists were at the start: László Cseh, Bence Biczó, Krisztián Takács, Evelyn Verrasztó, Ágnes Mutina, Péter Bernek, Gábor Financsek and Tamás Sors were the role models to their fellow-students. The special feature of the Judo HCUC is that almost the complete national team can start as it is ‘compulsorily’ expected from each of them to have a degree. Among others there was Hedvig Karakas, Olympic bronze me-dallist, Abigél Joó, Universiade gold medallist, Olympic point winner and László Csoknyai Universiade bronze medallist. Similarly to previous years Tibor Klampár and István Jónyer played a show match at the Table Tennis HCUC. The Athletics, Shooting and Weightlifting HCUC saw noble contests, with such well known competitors like Péter Nagy, Péter Sidi or Miklós Gyulai, President of the Hungarian Athletics Federation. The popularity of the HCUC events and thereby of the university compe-tition sport is well proved by the new sports joining from own source. For the first time were organised Cheerleader, Sport Climbing, Body Building and Fitness, Fixed Seat Rowing HCUC, and the Relay Run-ning HCUC was also staged for the first time under the big traditi-onal ‘Deer Chasers’ event.

The Basketball HCUC in joint organisation with the Hungarian Basketball Federation financed from corporate income tax al-lowance sources and otherwise unique in Europe as well with its

championship-system concluded its second year with success. The winning men and women

teams could participate at the European Univers-ities Games. Last year the B33 basketball played with 3 players each became involved in the cham-pionship contest first in the university field in conformity with the initiative of the International Basketball Association, and this tra-dition was continued this year.

The Water Polo HCUC making the most fans active has similarly reached its second year. Organised by the team of the Semmel-

weis University the number of the participating teams rose again this year, and the students also played a female show game.

Olympic champions of old and present time (among ot-hers: dr Tamás Faragó, Bulcsú Székely, Raymund Fodor, István Gergely, Ádám Steinmetz and dr Balázs Vincze) played a big share in the organisation. Among the guests of honour at the event were sports leaders on public, municipality and sport level (dr István Simicskó, dr Dénes Kemény, dr Miklós Tóth, dr Tamás Hoffmann). The high-standard games were again played according to a new set of spectacular rules, which was ahead of its age as since then the international stipulations have also been turned into this direction. Thanks to the outstandingly high number of spectators the championships greatly contributed to making the sporty and sport-loving lifestyle popular with univers-ity students.

The university ballgame played with the most parti-cipants, the university small-pitch football has also undergo-ne a serious development. The 11 million HUF support from Tele-kom allowed not only to include new students, and to attract as many first-year students as possible but the corporate partnership has drawn attention to the importance of PR and communication as well and to the administrative discipline expected in the profit oriented environment.

In the grassroots system of the Hungarian Football Federation many thousand young student players have registered and with an

additional subsidy the institutional winners could test their ex-pertise at the final in Debrecen. The university sport clubs do

their bit in the organisation of the institutional and national championships, who got a tender allocation in the fra-me amount of 20 million essentially based on the success of the competition sport and partly less on the success of the SPP. As part of the Sporting Nation the task for the ‘Sporting University’ is nothing else but to provide each student with the possibility to go in for sport. As set forth in the Alfréd Hajós Plan HUSF consi- ders its primary task in the field of leisure

sport to spread the healthy lifesty-le, the sporty way of life among

the students studying at universiti-es and colleges and non-sporting

students. The university SportPoint Program (SPP) coordinated mutualy-

ly by HUSF and the National Student Union of Hungary (NSUH) in conjunction and further improved in this academic year expected students of higher education with about 500 sport events thereby offering them access to sports. The students having joined the SPP could collect SportPoint points at the sport events, which they could ex-change to sport gifts with SPP emblem, e.g. sport bags, towels, bottles. To stimulate registration and participation HUSF and NSUH

SPP main prize: a pair of entry tickets to a Bayern München game

also announced a game. Students registe-ring and also attending SPP could win a bike, tablet, smart phone and as the first prize – thanks to Adidas – two entry tickets to a Bayern München game with travel and lodging. The winners were selected by draw at the EFOTT Festival between 17-19 July by well-known Olympi-ans (György Kozmann, Miklós Ungvári, Marianna Sastin). The lucky students received the-ir prize from the HUSF President at an awarding ceremony held at the House of Sports and from Bar-bara Benkó (SE) and Gábor Fejes (SZIE) returning home from the World University Cycling Cham-pionships with medals and places.

The winner of the first prize travelled with his father early No-vember to watch Bayern München’s home game with Borussia Dort-mund, a game full of excitement.

At HUSF initiative SPP visited also the camp of first-year students for the first time. The organizers were happy with the idea that the students

having been admitted realized already at the very first meeting before starting their studies that healthy and sporty lifestyle is of

special importance in the high education, too. The campaign calling at 6 such camps went to the University of Debrecen, University of Miskolc, Szent István University, and University of Szeged. Having listened to the reports on leisure sport ac-tivities, sporting possibilities offered by SPP more than 2,000 first-year students joined SPP, thus the number of the regis-tered students exceeded 12,000. To develop the sport life of

students studying in the high education HUSF helped the local sport organisation at the institutions of high education with a

tender in the amount of 15 million HUF. The institutions could get to the subsidy in ratio to their performance based on the number

of students registered to SPP and of the SportPoint points collected by them.

With HUSF’s special coordination integrated sport offices are functioning with about 600 million HUF subsidy for two years under TÁMOP project ‘B’ component ‘Sport in High Edu-cation’ (sport offices) and in the HUSF project ‘Sport Office Network of the Middle-Hun-garian Region’ to harmonize the sport life at institutions in the countryside and in the ca-pital area. In the project stipulating the cooperation of students and university clubs the sport organisational units with the sport offices doing the coordination elaborated and launched sport programmes, sustainable sporting possibilities and a mentoring system for the top athletes studying in the different establishments. The strengthening of the sport offi-ce network in high education with country-wide coverage expects support of additional three years, however there are already 24 institutions where the sport office was created and thereby it helps the university sport.

Hungarian University Sport History Based on the Lecture by Claude-Louis Gallien

On 24 September FISU President Claude-Louis Gallien gave a lecture as a guest of honour on the beginning of the inter-national university sport movement with focus on the Hun-garian commitment at the conference titled ’Contribution of the Hungarian University Sports to the International Uni-versity Sports Movement’. The Hungarian University Sports Federation – first of the kind in Europe – founded in 1907 joined the International Confederation of Students. The Hungarian university athletes first attended the 2nd Stu-dent World Championship in 1927 with a team of 60 in 6

sports held in Rome with the participation of 16 countries. They achieved very good results coming 2nd on the medal

table after Italy with 10 gold, 11 silver and 9 bronze medals. Hungarians attended the International University Games conside-

red the forerunner to the Universiades for the first time in 1928 in Paris finishing second with 8 gold, 8 silver and 8 bronze medals. After this Hun-

gary was a regular participant of these events, our teams usually finished on the podium or in places close to it. As to success outstanding was the 6th International University Summer Games held in Budapest in 1935, where 28 countries were present, there were races in 10 sports. Hungary finished on top of the ranking with 24 gold, 13 silver and 20 bronze medals. Between 1928 and 1939 there were six editions of the International University Winter Ga-mes, the Hungarian team attended each of them, the success did not fall much behind that of the Summer Games. At the first event held in Cortina D’Ampezzo in 1928 the Hun-garian team finished in the first place. At the International University Games between 1923-1939 there were 54 countries present on total, at the events 33 countries collected on total 1680 medals, out of this 5 countries (among them Hungary) took two third of the medals. In the period of 1939-1945 the Second World War caused a setback in the development of the international university sport movement, the International Students Confederation organising the events disappeared. In 1946 the International Students Union was founded with the participation of 43 countries and the organisation of the international university sport events continued, naturally with Hungary’s participation. At the Paris event in 1947 our athletes finished on top of the medal table with 18 gold, 6 silver, 7 bronze medals. It is a special bit of information that Ferenc Puskás as member of the football team also gave strength to the Hungarian delegation. In the period till 1947 such big named Hungarian athletes attended the international university sport events like the water-polo player Béla Komjádi, the oldest Olympic champion of our days Sándor Tarics, or the swimmer Ferenc Csík. In 1949 the Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU) was founded. The ‘FISU International University Sport Weeks’ were held every other year till 1955 similarly to the earlier routine separately for the summer and winter sports. Along with this the series of events organised by the International Student Federation was continued also till 1955, but these were attended just by a few out of the Western European countries. In 1957 it came to the agreement on the merge of the international university sport, afterwards the first Universiade was held in 1959 in Turin. Hungary continued to actively be part of the renewed international university sport movement and this went well beyond the regular

and successful attendance. In 1965 Budapest hosted the 4th Sum-mer Universiade with Hungary finishing on top of the medal table. Among the winners you can find one of Hungary’s excellent athletes of the 60ies, Gyula Zsivótzky, who could step on the highest place of three Universiade podiums (1959 Turin, 1961 Sofia, 1965 Budapest) prior to his Olympic gold in Mexico.

At the end of his detailed and captivating lecture President Gallien paid tribute to the work of prof dr Róbert Frenkl, former HUSF President, who as one of FISU’s leading officials contribu-ted a lot to the development of the Hungarian and international university sport from 1991 till his death in 2010.

FISU ForumIn March the FISU educational and cultural event, the 12th FISU Forum was held in Gwangju, South Korea, the host city of next year’s Summer Universiade. Our country was represented by Judit Szilasi, first-year student of Pázmány Péter Catholic Univers-

ity, and by dr Mózes Székely, HUSF Secretary General. Dr Tamás Freyer, HUSF Vice President was present as an invi-

ted lecturer, while dr Gyöngyi Földesi-Szabó, Pro-fessor Emeritus of the University of Physical Edu-

c a t i o n attended as member of the FISU Committee for the Education Services. At the event the Hungarian delegates had meetings with FISU leaders, among them with Mrs Alison Odell, Chairwoman of the Committee for the Education Services, which meetings were important from sport diplomacy point of view. At these occasions it came to the possibility to eventually organise the FISU Forum in Hungary in the near future.

Plans 2014/2015In the academic year 2014/2015 HUSF wishes to continue the programme approved in the Alfréd Hajós Plan, focusing on the results in the field of elite sport and on the backing to the institutional sport life in the field of sport for all. The trends of the specific development are set by the sport-specific plans of the Ministry of Human Capacities and HOC, while the different tasks tailored to sports are accomplished in synergy with the strategic concepts of the different sport federations.

The century-old traditions of university sport go back to the classic Oxford-Cambridge rowing events. Major events have been organised for students since 1920ies and this sum-mer it will be 80 years that Hungary could play host to the International University Games, with excellent outcome. Also at Universiades in 2015 HUSF and its sport federation partners keep supporting the participation of athletes favourite for medals and they get prepared to welcome the champions offering different prizes with the help of the sponsors. HCUCs remain to represent the peak of the local university sport life, which serve the targets of

high education and the Olympic preparation as well. The institutions match their forces on the sport fields, too, they greet university champions in the different sports, the prestige of the university sport life is increased thereby, thus sport is becoming more and more a part of university marketing and through all this the popularity of sport increases with the students. In the field of top sport HCUC is an acknowledged and at the same time qua-lification element of the given sport, well integrated in the annual competition calendar, and receives the measurable role in the judgement of the success of the club life. Through winning and cooperating with the institutions the university mentoring of the most talen-ted athletes becomes also available everywhere and the appropriate financial support is also made within reach through the scholarship systems. HUSF has the task to involve the students interesting both for the media and student communities and to run the university competition system attractive for external supporters, too.

As shown in the national representative surveys conducted by HUSF in conjunction with NSUH and Eötvös Loránd University 28,9 percent of the students do sports at least 2-3 times a week for at least 30-45 minutes. Thus 29 students out of 100 comply with the recreation minimum. They are followed by those, who reported to do sports once a week (33,5 per-cent), then those with sporting activities monthly or rarely (37,6 percent). HUSF wishes to include the group of those, who are already on the move, but do not reach the frequency necessarily required in the sense of physiology. SportPoint Program (SPP) is exactly targe-ted at them to strengthen motivation, as a new element in this framework the training parts have also been accommodated besides the sport events. For SPP the explicit target is to reach twenty thousand students with effective registration, which brings the possibility to attract product supporters as well. This inevitably requires to further improve commu-nication, especially to make publicity for the healthy lifestyle and to create health-cons-cious university campus.

The conditions of the university sporting activity calls for further improvement in order to get two third of the students move more times a week. To run the coordination tasks the network of the institutional integrated sport offices needs support in additional three years. The necessary sport capacity requires the education and further training of PE teachers and coaches, which prepare them to back the sporty lifestyle of the age group 18-25. The development of the sport infrastructure fighting at certain places with already very serious shortfalls has to be solved, which would allow the sporting activity at least in the basic sports and in the sports most popular with the students. The students in South Buda area of the capital will be served in ‘Tüskecsarnok’ sports hall and the swimming pool, while the accomplishment of the special programmes in the institutions can be facilitated by the planned EFOP tenders, the construction of the infra-structure by the corporate tax allowance supports. The level and extent of the university sport develop-ment basically depend on the student initiatives, opportunities ensured to the PE teachers and on the special aptitude of the coaches. HUSF, the ins-titutions and the sport federations have the task to create the conditions, which is not feasible without the help of the state as maintaining party and of HOC in the role of special guidance. And the most successful students, among them László Cseh, Berna-dett Heidum or Abigél Joó invited to act as the ‘role models’ of university sport can contribute to the success with their personal example.
