I thank all of you for your patience in waiting for this issue of KANU’s Hunehune Kalo. We have been extremely busy, but its all been good. KANU’s first annual ʻĀlana Gala was a success on Friday, Ocotber 28th. ʻĀlana, which means light, byoyant, easily floating, offering, especially a free-will offering, -clearly described this beautiful evening at Merriman’s. Mahalo nui to each and everyone who helped to make this Gala happen. Mahalo nui staff, kumu, parents, students, KALO staff, extedned ʻohana and community members for your focused efforts. A special mahalo to Gala Event Coordinator, Chelsey Dickinson. On Saturday, October 29th, KANU’s Sustainability Committee held a campus work day. While the volunteers were few, they got a lot done! Mahalo nui to Kumu KiTeya, Cynthia Waymegwance (Kumu KiTeya’s mom), Kumu Maya and 6th grader, Shae-lyn Cardoza, and her mom and dad, Aunty Malia and Uncle Jamie for their hardwork in clearing Spiny pig weed from the pasture area behind our new multi-purpose building. The Sustainability Committee is working to add an area to raise livestock as well as increase areas that can be turned into gardens that will provide vegetables and frutis to subsidize snacks and meals for our keiki. If you can kōkua with future work days and committee actions, please contact Kumu KiTeya. KANU would also like to say mahalo and aloha to Aunty Skippy Turek, who recently retired. Aunty Skippy has been with KANU since our humble beginnings at our Lālāmilo campus. Her expertise and experience in carpentry, sailing, sewing, fixing things, food service, cleaning and problem solving has helped KANU survive and thrive through all of our ups and downs for 16 years! We wish Aunty Skippy more relaxed days at the beach and with her ʻohana, and know the expansion of a family business with her daughter will do well with her on-board. She will surely be missed. Teachers report back to school on Friday, January 6, 2017.CTAP – When driving to and from school the speed limit is ...25 MPH… please keep each other safe by driving with care under the speed limit. On Wednesday 11/16 all ʻOhana and students are welcome to sign waive along with the CTAP team in front of Aunty Nani’s house or at the round-about at school from 7:30 to 8:00am.SCHOOL TRAFFIC – SLOW DOWN…and follow our one-way traffic pattern during drop-off and pick-up. As you drive up our driveway, stay on the right side to enter the elementary parking lot and roundabout. Stay on the left side to turn left to the parking lot of Hālau Hoʻolako & Hālau Puke, and to enter our middle and high school drop-off and pick-up area. MAKAHIKI FUNDRAISER TICKET BUNDLES – were sent home with haumāna on 11/1/2016. Each child is asked to sell one bundle. ʻOhana with more than 3 keiki at the school are only asked to sell 2 bundles. Bundle money or unsold tickets are due back to the office on 11/14/16. Meal Ticket Event Dates: 12/8 Turkey Chili w/salad & rice; 12/16 Chicken or Beef Luʻau stew bowl; 1/21 Hawaiian Plate at Moku o Keawe Makahiki.
