Humans of Moreland began on Moreland’s Facebook page as a borrowed idea from the famous blog ‘Humans of New York’.

While the Humans series was very much a social media phenomenon to begin with, many similar projects around the world have been turned into exhibitions and books.

Humans of Moreland celebrates local people, their images and their inspiring stories.

SARAHA familiar face in Victoria Mall, Sarah describes herself as a “community creative”. She has initiated several projects that offer opportunities for engagement and belonging for residents, especially those who may be experiencing hardship or marginalisation. Events such as the weekly Friday Free Lunches, which Sarah organises, act as “a weekly check in … one man even reported having a spiritual experience!”.

“I try to design small and meaningful activities that encourage happiness,” Sarah says. Through free creative activities, shared meals and meet-ups she aims to create spaces that “show a bit of love, acceptance and no shame …

“… the point is to make a safe space.”

Nabil Hassan moved to Australia from Egypt in 1983, before settling in Moreland in the early 2000s. Nabil established his restaurant Half Moon Café in 2003, which quickly became a Coburg staple.

The business and Nabil are icons of Victoria Mall. A local himself, Nabil has built a community of regular customers. “I love people and love to talk to everyone … a lot of customers come just to say hello,” Nabil says. “They feel at home, like they’re part of it.”

Asked about his ambitions for the future, Nabil said he’s happy his business is still small and easy to manage. “I don’t want to be a millionaire,” Nabil says. “It’s comfortable, what more would I want? To be healthy, what more do you need.”

Hendrick is a 14-month-old red-heeler-cross rescue pup. He’s one of the many four-legged furry residents who call Moreland home.

“Hendrick was dumped as a puppy along with his mother and the eight other puppies from his litter,” his owner Matilda says. “When we went to the rescue to choose a dog he curled up at my feet and I knew he was the one. He chose us, really.”

Bron agrees. “He’s a gentle giant who thinks he’s a lap dog. He’s favourite thing to do is cuddle,” she adds.

Margaret Partridge has been volunteering since she took up the role as a church organist in 1961. It was through this that she became active in her local Rotary group, where she still serves today.

She was recognised for this invaluable contribution to the community with the 2018 Moreland Volunteer of the Year Award.

“Volunteering connects you with people, and that keeps life going well. I’ve met a great mob of people from all over the place,” said Margaret on the benefits of volunteering.

Asked how it felt to be nominated, Margaret said she was “… thrilled to bits. I couldn’t even go to the presentation night because I had Rotary on.”

Sri Lankan refugee Niro Vithyasekar has worked in Melbourne’s food industry for over three years.

After dreaming of setting up a small business he graduated from the Stepping Stones Small Business Program in July last year. Niro now runs his own catering company, Tuka Tuka Kothu Roti Man – serving popular street food from Sri Lanka throughout Melbourne.

“KothuRoti means ‘chopped roti’ in Tamil,” Niro says “You will be able to hear us at the market, listen for “tuka tuka”– or the sound of us chopping the roti!”

Niro also adds that you can regulate the dish’s spice level. “Just tell us if you want mild, medium or hot,” he says.

“We are always busy around Melbourne – and also out of town – so hopefully see you around!”

Clare Headland is a veracious reader and long-time Banjo Patterson fan.

She has worked in her current role in palliative care for six years and is proud to be involved in progressing transgender representation in, and accessibility to, hospital services.

“I’ll stand up and I’ll talk,” says Clare of her activism. “The great majority of transgender people don’t tend to go to hospitals until we absolutely have to, because we are so afraid of being treated with less than normal respect. So we’re trying to create a space where people feel safe.”

“I’m old enough and brave enough to actually express my real self … I am so deeply deeply happy to have found that congruency between my inside and my outside,” says Clare.

“Now my relationship with my children is wonderful, I have a circle of friends at work and outside of work I could never have imagined and I’m just really happy.”

“In 2007 I joined the Moreland City Band. It was an A-grade competing brass band and I was vice president at the time. The president left, everybody else left, I was the only one left standing.

I was well aware of the music community in Moreland, some of the finest musicians live in this neck of the woods. One of the things we wanted to do was open it up to the broader music community. So it’s become a centre of music making of all sorts here in Moreland. It really has been a collaboration … this is an organic space, it has grown out of the music community of this area.

There’s so many things that go on here quietly that need to be amplified. It’s wonderful to know that people see what’s going on and people dig it.”

Artist Fern Smith’s studio has hosted community projects and meetings, most recently as part of the Merlynston Progress Hall redevelopment movement.

“In this area there’s a lot of creative people – like all of Moreland really”.

Fern has also seen a change in community and artistic consciousness over her time practicing.

She has seen issues, such as environmental awareness, move from the margins to the mainstream. As Fern says, “A long time ago I was considered a hippie – but those things about protesting, about forests – are now mainstream, it’s fantastic.”

“If you live your life as an artist you’re telling stories.”

Kelly, a horticulturalist, and Sally, a community development worker, first came up with the idea for Fawkner Food Bowl as a space to bring people together and build community.

“I have a young child and when I moved here I struggled to connect with people,” Kelly says. And so, with the support of Neighbourhood Project funding, CoDesign Studio and Council, a disused green at the Fawkner Bowling Club was transformed into an active community space.

The Food Bowl has brought together a wide range of people from the Fawkner community, including graphic designers, artists and even a physicist.

As Kelly and Sally say, the Food Bowl have allowed members to “share information and skills and find all these amazing people in Fawkner.”

To find out more about the Fawkner Food Bowl see fawknerfoodbowls.com.

Claire Best is a Brunswick-based shoe maker, designer and teacher. She also sources materials from local suppliers.

“I began the long process of learning how to make shoes by doing as many short courses as I could,” Claire says.

She adds that it used to be much more common to buy handmade shoes or have shoes made especially for you. “Meeting new customers, they’re always so surprised and excited to discover there’s someone who still makes them locally,” Claire adds.

“My customers are shoe lovers with an eye for unique fashion and design, who want something that stands out and will last forever.”

Ender Baskan (also known as DJ Haloumi), is a Turkish-Australian writer and DJ who grew up playing soccer and collecting fruit from his grandparents’ plum trees in Glenroy.

He’s known for DJ sets inspired by the poetry and storytelling of Turkish folk music – spinning a kaleidoscopic range of Turkish vinyl, echoing sounds from the golden age of psychedelic folk.

“Turkish music of the 70s lends itself to the psychedelic sound of that time,” he says.

“It also contains the poetry and important histories of people migrating.”

DECEMBER2019 “Woof, woof” Glenroy locals –

Golden Retrievers Pancake and Sundae – say when asked about their favourite place to visit, the enclosed dog park at Brunswick’s Gilpin Park.

“I love to bring the dogs here,” Pancake and Sundae’s owner, John Marioli, adds.

“Enclosed dog parks allow dogs to run freely without the risk of traffic. It’s also a great place to meet fellow dog owners, have a chat and to enjoy the outdoors.”
