HUMAN RIGHTS IN LITHUANIA
Human rights in Lithuania are protected and observed by the
main law in Lithuania-Constitution.This law contains
the most important human rights- the right to
work, studying etc. Human rights and freedoms are innate. The
human has the right to have his own convictions and freely
express them. The human being must not be hindered from
seeking, receiving and imparting information and ideas.
Property must be inviolable. The rights of
ownership are protected by law. While
implementing his rights and freedoms, the human
being must observe the Constitution and the laws
of the Republic of Lithuania and must not restrict the rights and
freedoms of other people.
1995 Lithuania ratified Convention of Human Rights and Fundamental freedoms. Respect for human rights is one of the main characteristics of any
democratic country. The main international document ratified in 1948 is Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Are these rights observed and followed? There are a number of everyday situations when we can hear: ‚‘violated human
rights‘, “does not uphold the rights‘. That is why we can assume that human rights are not always promoted, though it mainly depends on the country, its laws, individual citizens, their attitude and value system. Every person claims that he/she knows his rights, however, it is essential to know the duty which
comes together with every right.
If everyone carried out their duties and perceived their
rights at the same time, then human rights would be
respected and defended at the state level. Then there would be respect for any
citizen, for his innate right-the right to live and we would not hear on TV that someone did
not respect this right and violated it.
The person has to start with himself/herself and his/her immediate surroundings. Despite the fact that every child in Lithuania has the right to study, there are children who ignore this right and do not attend any educational institution. If you have the right to study, then your duty is to attend school. If every citizen observed his rights and carried out his duties, then we would not have cases of violating and not observing human rights in Lithuania.
It seems paradoxical that constitutions are mainly created
with the aim to protect its citizens from the state lawlessness. To be more exact, from the lawlessness
and bureaucracy of state institutions and state officials.
If to give the answer to the question ,“Are human rights violated in Lithuania?-Yes, they are“.One of the examples
could be the cases of unauthorized surveillance of journalists and politicians. Lithuanian citizens, defending
their rights, sometimes bring their complaints for the Strasbourg Court of Human Rights. Humans rights are frequently violated at workplace. However, employees
often tolerate their employers‘ lawlessness because they are afraid of being made redundant.
