PRS Foundation’s New Music Biennial:A Free Festival of New Music

Hull plays host to a celebration ofnew music from an impressiveline-up of talented UKcomposers. Taking place acrosstwo festival weekends in July2017, in Hull and at London’sSouth Bank Centre and broadcastby BBC Radio 3, explosions ofsound will erupt across Hull CityCentre in a series of bite sizedperformances.

Are you ready for Hull Jazz FestivalSummer Edition? 2017’s a big year for usas we celebrate our 25th anniversary,coinciding with Hull UK City of Culture2017.

We’re getting the birthday celebrationsunderway in July with a line-up featuringthe best in international, national andlocal talent. New Yorker DonnyMcCaslin appears with his band, whocollaborated and played on DavidBowie’s final masterpiece Blackstar.Britain’s best known saxophonist,Courtney Pine, performs tracks from hisnew project Black Notes from the Deep,featuring special guest vocalist, UK soulstar Omar. And, representing the newsound of the Parisian Gyspy Jazz scene,we’ve got guitarist Sébastien Giniaux,supported by The Grimaldi Quartet.

Rising stars of the London jazz scene,Binker & Moses and Nérija perform inHull for the first time and we’ve gotspecial anniversary gigs from localfavourites Snake Davis, Ain’tMisbehavin’, Bud Sugar and ChieduOraka. Plus, a performance of PaulTaylor’s Jazz in Hull: People & Placessuite, dedicated to the local performerswho encouraged him early in his career.

Outside of the Festival, we’re thrilled tobe producing GoGo Penguin’s newcommission for the PRSF New MusicBiennial, premiering in Hull and theRoyal Festival Hall this July. Seeopposite for details.

McCaslin’s been a talked-about presence in New Yorkjazz circles since the early1990s, when he was playingwith Gil Evans and in thefusion group Steps Ahead,and beginning his longassociation with MariaSchneider. With 11 albumsand three Grammynominations under his belt,he became a householdname in 2016 when hecollaborated with DavidBowie on what was to behis final album, Blackstar.

McCaslin’s music isambitious but accessible.It’s unapologetically thework of someone who grewup listening to rock on theradio. And with recentalbums including covers ofAphex Twin and Boards ofCanada, he’s bringinginfluences from electronicmusic into the mix too. Jazz trombonist, composer and poet Paul Taylorfirst began playing jazz in Hull in the 1970s.Encouraged by many local musicians and bandleaders, he was active on the Hull music scene forseveral years before moving to London, where hisreputation soon developed.

In recent years, he’s performed with Loose Tubes,Roberto Pla’s Latin Ensemble and the Mingus BigBand. His Jazz in Hull: People & Places Suite is atribute to the local performers who encouraged himand to the venues where they played.Jazz in Hull is presented in association with Hulljazz and withthanks to Dave Ellis. It was originally commissioned by HumberMouth in 2014.

This performance of Jazz in Hull: People & Places is dedicated to thememory of Ken Ford.

Multi-instrumentalist Courtney PineCBE is a British-born Jazz Giant. In the80’s he was one of the first blackBritish jazz artists to make a seriousmark on the music scene when his firstalbum made the top 40. Since then,he’s had numerous BBC Jazz Awardsas well as MOBOs and a MercuryMusic Prize nomination and he’sremained at the forefront of UK jazz.

For his latest project, Black Notes fromthe Deep, he returns to the tenorsaxophone for the first time in 10years. An evening withPat MethenyWinner of 20 Grammy Awards, guitarist PatMetheny is making a special visit to Hull JazzFestival as part of his 2017 world tour, and tocelebrate Hull UK City of Culture 2017 andHull Jazz Festival’s 25th anniversary.

With the release of his first album, BrightSize Life, in 1975, he reinvented thetraditional jazz guitar sound for a newgeneration of players. Over the years, he’sperformed with artists as diverse as SteveReich, Ornette Coleman, Herbie Hancockand David Bowie and he was recentlyinducted into the Downbeat Hall of Fame asits youngest member, and only the fourthguitarist (joining Django Reinhardt, CharlieChristian and Wes Montgomery). Methenywill present a range of music fromthroughout his career.

We’re celebrating UNESCO InternationalJazz Day with an exhilarating genre-bendingconcert. Gould and Simcock, both wellknown in their respective fields of classicaland jazz, explore the intersections betweenclassical and jazz. Drawing on Sonatas forViolin and Keyboard by J. S. Bach, as well asother arrangements by Simcock (‘a creativegenius’ according to Chick Corea), this will bea wonderful exploration of Bach’s influenceand music.

The commission will be precededby performances of the six works by young peoplefrom Hull and East Riding schools.
