Item 309-02 – $1.00 Fisherman use – 1952, 5¢ GEOVI, $1.00 Fisherman tied by Vancouver cds on cover paying $1.05 septuple weight airmail letter rate to Switzerland (b/s). 7 times 15¢. $200.00

Item 309-04 – Woodstock Ontario – 1871, money package forwarded by American Merchants Union Express Company Woodstock Ontario red stamp on envelope with waxseal to Brantford. The money package enclosing $220.00 was sent with specific instruction that the consignee should open the package at the end so as to preserve all the seals. In 1850, Henry Wells, William Fargo and John Butterfield formed the American Express Company. In 1868, the company merged with Merchants Union Company to form the American Merchants Union Express Co. before the name later reverted to the American Express Co. which still trades to this day. A number of American Express companies established offices in Canada. Officially, they were not allowed to carry letters over Canadian Government post routes, but they could carry parcels and packages. They also transmitted cash under their own system of Money Packages. The American Merchants Union Express Co set up its Canadian HQ in Brantford Ontario in 1871. $1,750.00

Item 309-10 – 1863 Legislative Assembly – 1863, John Hillyard Cameron free franked cover from the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada (8th Parliament, located at Quebec) to Toronto. Cameron was an Ontario lawyer, businessman and political figure. He was a Conservative member of the House of Commons of Canada representing Peel. A bit rough. $75.00

Item 309-11 – No credit for partial payment – 1862, stampless cover from Cap Santé LC (Portneuf county) paid 5¢ underpaying 10¢ cross border rate with no credit for partial payment 10¢ collect to Wilson Maine. Item 309-18 – US special delivery to Montreal – c1910, 2¢ imperforated, 10¢ Washington tied by Chicago cds on Latham Machinery Co. part mailer to Montreal with 10¢ postage due. The special delivery fee paid by the 10¢ Washington was contrary to regulations and charged 10¢ collect. Until January 1, 1923, if special delivery service was required for a letter addressed to the United States or from the United States to Canada, the letter had to be franked with a 10 cent special delivery stamp of the receiving country. $100.00 SOLD

Item 309-32 – Cape Breton Highlanders – 1916, 2¢+1¢ Wartax tied by FPO Militia Aldershot cds on reduced cover to Sydney. 3-page letter accompanies. The 185th Canadian Infantry Battn (Cape Breton Highlanders), CEF was authorized on 15 July 1916 and embarked for GB on 12 October 1916. There it provided reinforcements for the Canadian Corps in the field until 15 February 1918, when its personnel were absorbed by the 17th Reserve Battalion, CEF.18 The battalion was subsequently disbanded on 29 November 1918. $75.00 SOLD

Large ‘’Express Fee Paid’’ applied in England. The regulation relating to SD service to GB is that SD letters for GB prepaid with Canadian stamps may be accepted for onward transmission. There must bear a Canadian SD stamp or be prepaid 10¢ in Canadian postage in addition to the surface or airmail postage rate applicable. The SD sticker No. SD.8 obtainable at all P.O. should be affixed in the upper left-hand corner of the address side or the word ‘’Special Delivery’’ should be legibly written in the same position. $40.00 SOLD

Item 309-46 – Dawson Ontario manuscript (Carleton county) 1875, free franked stampless cover from Dawson Ontario with manuscript postmark dated April 23 1875 rerated 5¢ collect to Ottawa. This office was opened on April 1 1875 and the ERD for a manuscript postmark is April 14 1875. The P.O. closed in 1909. Stain. $150.00

Item 309-47 – 2¢ Cents on Provincial Return – 1867, 2¢ Cents (Scott 20, rose, perf 12, quite well centered) tied by target cancel from Quebec CE on pre-printed Provincial Return paying 2¢ double printed matter rate to Victoriaville. Arthabaska Station b/s and unclaimed. When the Legislative Assembly was in session, these circulars were sent free of postage. As it so happens, on the very day this cover was postmarked, the Dominion Parliament enacted the Post Office act that, among other things, denied free postage to the Provincial governments. Only 6 reported examples. Stain. RPSL certificate. $2,250.00 SOLD
