Letter from our Principal…. Once again, fall has been a very busy time at Hughes Academy. We hosted our Magnet Open House on October 21 st and had approximately 100 families in attendance. I received numerous com- pliments about the warm welcome our guests received while visiting our building. As usual, our PTSA helped to ensure that this activity was successful. I extend a special thanks to the parent vol- unteers who gave of their time to talk with prospective parents and students. As we move further into the academic year, Greenville County Schools now has two new tools to help you track information about your child. These new tools will help you be better informed about your child’s academic performance and meal account balance. The first new tool is the Parent Portal. In order to take advantage of this new system, you must initially obtain an access ID and password. With this access ID and password, you can set up your own personal username and password to monitor your child’s academics, attendance and much more. Because this information is sensitive, you must pick up the access ID and password in person at your child’s school and show proper identification as requested. The school will not email, mail or provide the information over the phone. The second new tool is the e-Funds Program which allows parents/guardians to view and make online payments from your checking account or credit card into your child’s meal account. Parents/ guardians with multiple children attending Greenville County Schools can make a payment desig- nating certain amounts per child. The system also has the ability to make recurring payments on a regular basis. To get started, you need your child’s student identification number, which is provided on your child’s report card. Access to the Parent Portal (student grades, etc.) and e-Funds Program (online meal payment) is provided on the Greenville County Schools website at http://www.greenville.k12.sc.us . You will also find additional information about both helpful tools for parents/guardians on the district’s website under the Parent menu - select either Meal or Portal. We hope you will take advantage of these great tools to help keep track of your child’s progress in school. Even though we are only at the end of the first quarter of the school year, it is very important for you to meet with teachers now regarding any concerns about your child’s grades. The Parent Portal will be an excellent way to keep track of your child’s progress. However, working with teachers to ad- dress problems early will give students the opportunity to make the changes necessary to improve their grades. Our staff is committed to working with you and your child to insure a successful school year. Sincerely, Dr. Patrick J. CAREER DAY INFORMATION

Welcome to the 2010-2011 school year! Students will jump back into their books, and

pretty soon, they will jump into their futures. Did you know that our students may have

more than 3 careers during their adult lifetime? We need to help prepare them for "Plan

B." At Hughes Academy, our career development program focuses on career exploration.

The goal is to expose our students to various careers and career tools to help them make

wise career choices in the future. This year students will have the opportunity to partici-

pate in the following career activities: career classroom speakers/lessons, character edu-

cation, career day, job shadowing, and career assessments. Also, all students are en-

couraged to participate in the National Career Development Poster and Poetry contest.

This year’s theme is “Celebrating My Career Dreams.” Please check the Hughes website

for contest guidelines. The contest deadline is November 17, 2010. We will select 3

winners from Hughes Academy. Our 1st place winner’s entry will be entered for the dis-

trict level contest.

We need your help with Career Day! Career Day is a special day when business profes-

sionals from our community visit our school to share information about their careers.

Students rotate to various speakers to hear information on the careers. Career Day will

be on Friday, December 10th from 8:30 am until 11:00 am. We are in need of speakers

for Career Day. If you are willing to share your career with our students, please contact

me in the guidance office (864) 355-6219. Thanks and have a wonderful school year!

Marsha Leamon, Hughes Academy Career Specialist
