Project description: The project is for the development of the Headquarters of the Saudi Electricity Company which will accommodate 4500 staff members including the senior executives and management. The building is a culmination of 30 years of planning by SEC. The headquarters complex is designed to be an exemplar building of innovative and sutainable principles including elements such

as a solar PV roof array generating in excess of 1MW of energy, a passive solar screen which maximises views whilst cutting out solar gain and doubles as a cleaning gantry (thus removing the need for a BMU). There are 4 identical towers at ground plus 5 levels (each). At the centre of the development is the Podium which connects all of these towers and is the heart of the HQ campus. Around the base of the podium, there is a sunken ‘wadi’, which provides lighting to a lower ground level academic centre, thus maximizing space and taking advantage of the the overshadowing of the HQ buildings to create a cool and pleasant landscaped environment. The wadi also allows natural ventilation to the 1st parking level.

Page 9: Hugh Kidman portfolio 2010 to 2015

Role during project: Conceptual design leader and design development control. I led a team of designers in the development of the concept through to the design development stage and ultimately the review of detail design development. I was responsible for the production and preparation of all presentation materials as well as presenting these to the board of SEC, bidding contractors and other parties at all stages in the design process. The building is currently under construction.

Project description The project involved the development of the strategic tourism infrastructure for an endurance horse racing track and race village in the ourtskirts of Al Ula. The project involves the creation of an equestrian endurance race centre with tracks of 10km (marathon), 20km and 30km sections, as well as a 2km flat track for more regular racing

events. The endurance village is enhanced by the inclusion of two public plazas; one relating to the racing activities directly and the other a retail plaza with commercial activities and a traditional souk which operate and provide financial activity beyond the race events. The landscaping is managed by local farmers who lease the palm groves, thus creating a sustainable and ‘edible’ landscape. Other activities that enhance the development include an 18 hole championship golf course with club house and course-side villas for private investment. There are adventure activities for the whole family including an adventure centre and even and adventure flight centre for hot air ballooning micro-light flights and paragliding. This makes for a serious adventure

destination in the Kingdom.

Role during project Design leader from feasibility and site evaluation stage, producing a strategic roadmap for the regeneration of Alu Ula as well as the immediate region. I developed the concept masterplan and presented this to HRH Prince Charles of the United Kingdom and to HRH Prince Faisal Bin Salman and HRH Prince Sultan Bin Salman.

Project Name KAFD Grande Mosque Location KAFD, Riyadh ,Saudi ArabiaClient Rayadah Investment Company (RIC)Sector FaithStage Concept to schematic designBudget / Area 100 000 000 SAR, 6 103m2

Project Description: The building represents the spiritual centre of the KAFD masterplan and serves as the Juma’ah (Friday) mosque for the development and surrounding communities. The building is a major (although compact) landmark within the KAFD ‘forest’ of skyscrapers. The building emerges at the convergence of three of KAFD’s ‘wadis’ and is a landmark as viewed from these wadis.

The building is also viewed predominantly from above (from the neighboring buildings) and thus the roof represents the 5th and very significant elevation. The building is further landmarked by two sculpted 60m minarets. The inspiration and concept of the form and basis for the geometry of the mosque is an abstraction of the crystalline intersecting plates of a desert rose. Internally the dynamic movement is reflected in an exciting faceted lining which stays true to the external form.

The building is column free and all of the loads are transferred through the structural skin. The building accommodates 1466 prayer spaces on two

Page 35: Hugh Kidman portfolio 2010 to 2015

levels in an innovative way. The mezzanine is designed as a microclimate and serves reduced numbers of worshippers during off peak times, thus reducing significantly the energy consumption on cooling.

Role during project: Design leader from concept development leading a team of 6 to deliver the scheme to Schematic Design stage in an incredibly short time. From concept to DD stage was three months.

Project Description: The Western Station (one of the 4 main metro stations) in the new Arriyadh Metro System is anticipated to become a catalyst for urban change and growth and a major urban hub in the area, revitalizing and re-connecting neighborhoods, providing transportation and services and along with that, a development of economic activity in the

neighborhood. The metro station is designed as an “urban concept” building rather than a stand-alone station building, with the station intrinsically part of a new public space, fully permeable from all sides and easily accessible to the public. Referring to the Kingdom’s dominant desert landscapes, oasis and palm groves, the design concept of the station building is a modern interpretation of the “desert sand dunes”. where a cluster of dune shaped, earth colored structures emerge from the site creating opportunities for station entries. The Project includes a large indoor fruit and vegerable market which is linked to the station and is due to become a major attractor in Western Riyadh, thereby generating a major draw to the area. The project is

Page 49: Hugh Kidman portfolio 2010 to 2015

targeting a LEED silver rating.

Role during project: Design review for the initial competition submission by Omrania Jordan, and following the assignment of the job, I was part of the design team responsible for the adaptation of the concept to our allocated site. I travelled to Amman Jordan to work directly with our team there. Other consultans who are developing the remaining metro station sites include Zaha Hadid, Snøhetta and Gerber.

Project description: Situated on the South Western outskirts of Riyadh, the King Abdullah City for Atomic & Renewable Energy (KA-CARE) project is designed to be an exemplary eco-city with the capacity to accommodate approximately

80,000 people. As well as power generation and related value chain industries, the scheme will include residential communities, retail facilities, healthcare, leisure, industrial and commercial units, schools and university buildings, community centres and mosques. The new city will become a research-focused, net-zero carbon and environmentally sustainable prototype that transforms the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia into a global leader in renewable energy in practice, industry and research. This project was initiated as an invitation-only competition, with 14 of the world’s pre-eminent architects including Fosters, SOM, Snøhetta, Nikken Sekkei, Gensler, Bruce Mau Design etc. participating. The timescale for the project was incredibly short, given the size of the

Page 63: Hugh Kidman portfolio 2010 to 2015

undertaking. O&A progressed to the second stage along with two other consultants.

Role during project: Design team leader on urban design at Omrania. My duties included coordinating with all consultants, developing conceptual models upon which to base the schematic urban form, presenting our work to the client and to the participating 14 international companies.

Project description: The Saudi Arabian Monetary Authority (SAMA) invited a select group of international consultants (incl. HOK, Gensler etc.) to prepare a detailed feasibility study including a detailed conceptual design of a new Tier IV rated data centre in Riyadh. This was to be the first of if its kind and rating in the Kingdom and this presented

a number of issues in relation to redundancy and high security measures. The Data centre is to be a replacement of the current TIER III rated data Centre housed in the basement of the HQ of SAMA. Special considerations for buildings of this type at this rating include full redundancy for all power supplies including generators and backup generators, 2 incoming power supplies, redundancy in air conditioning and 340 water and fuel storage tanks. This is also coupled with rigorous security measures including blast proof walls, blast radius setbacks and bulletproof glass make for a highly secure development, centred around the protected heart of the scheme, the ‘White Space’.

Project description: The Client initiated a selected entry competition for the design of a new architectural character for the bank as part of a rebranding exercise. The purpose of the exercise was to create a brand identity that is representative of the success of Al Jazira and its core values. Omrania was a finalist and selected to develop the brand further. As part of the process we were required to

design an exemplar ‘flagship’ branch and then look at a number of existing branches and demonstrate how the new architectural branding could be applied. In addition a typical mall and line shop was also to be rebranded to demonstrate the flexibility of the new identity. The proposal includes the selection of a palette of colours drawn from the existing branding. These colours were then associated with a variety of corresponding materials to the create the palette of materials. The Original logo was abstracted and then transformed into a perforated pattern to be used as screens, backdrops and shading to various elements e.g. façades, windows space dividers and drive through ATM’s. The external imagery and pattern is also reflected internally to

strengthen the identity and association.

Role during project: Concept design and design development, review and design work in conjunction with the Amman Office. All presentation material and boards were prepared by me. I was responsible for presenting to the client.

Project description: Banque Saudi Fransi approached Omrania to revitalize their headquarters building in Riyadh and in so doing, create a fresh new working environment for staff throughout the 10 storey building and at all levels in the managerial hierarchy. The building is an innovative and iconic structure from the 80’s and the bank identifies strongly with the image that it creates. The job was

performed as a joint venture with Gensler (Gensler focused on the interiors). As part of the exercise we looked at the masterplan of the site analyzing the site for potential future expansion and looking to eliminate unsightly security measures and incorporate these into the new landscaped plazas. We were also asked to create a new local branch which we innovatively built into the geometry of the existing building, whilst creating new vistas, landscaped zones, site entries, parking and drive through ATM strands. Project description: The project represents a feasibility study for the development of the site as an investment for HRH King Salman Centre for Disability Research. We were tasked with developing the site initially as a residential and office split

scheme but this was refined to an office only development providing flexible high class office space which could be let as an HQ building or various splits such as 1,2,3 per floor or 1,2 or 3 vertical splits. This maximized flexibility really gives the foundation, the most options in terms of marketing the development as a leased property.

The main design driver was to create a building that is dynamic and interesting and reflects the design ethic of the DQ. The building mass is made up of overlapping floors which represent strata of rock from the wadis. The entrance recesses are carved out of the mass further representing the notion of a ‘wadi’ building. A tertiary level of design reference

Page 109: Hugh Kidman portfolio 2010 to 2015

to the notion of wadi is represented by fritting to the glazing which takes on the appearance of the finer strata of rock, but is abstracted. A further embellishment is the inclusion of planting in the overlaps to give the sense of a dry waterfall. Internally the external from is reflected in the light wells. All of these references to wadi, create dynamic spaces which are cool and inviting environments

Role during project: Design team leader on buildings and masterplan. This entailed designing and modeling the envelope and leading a small team to deliver the concept to the (then) Prince Salman. Center for Disability investment fund.

Project description: Our Territorial Model for the future. In this approach we consider the metropolitan area of Taif as a decentralized structure. The new developments and projects will create two suburban cities and smaller centres around Taif. The aim of this vision is to control urban growth and improving quality of life for Taif citizens. Different sub-centres for growth will be

identified along with new Expressways and Highways aiming to ease congestion in the city center of Taif. Our project will become the seed for one of the biggest suburban cities of the Metropolitan Area: the Taif New City. The dimension and scale of this new development are big enough to be considered as a self-contained new town, with a program that includes a balance of housing, jobs and services. The distance from the city center of Taif (about 40km by road) or 22 km to Al Huwaya makes the work-housing relationship difficult. A sustainable mixed use development serving up to 60,000 people, offering all of the constituent functions of a balanced community and hosting the Heart of the future new Taif City.

Project description: This project was commissioned by the PVPV for a Friday or Juma’ah mosque in the picturesque area of Abha. The site is located just outside Abha in the mountainous Asir region of Western Saudi Arabia. The design is for a complex of a Friday or Juma’a Mosque, PVPV offices

as well as Imam and Muathen’s accommodation. The area is known for its variety of local architectural styles whose influence is determined by location relative to position (altitude) on the mountain range, varying from adobe construction typologies at the lower foot hills to a stone construction typologies on the uppers slopes. The project draws strongly on influence from the style of Abha, whilst introducing elements from further afield in the higher parts of the mountains, thereby being of a more regional interpretation. The building is a modernist realization of these styles and plays with a variety of material and earth tones. The mosque serves to accommodate 1680 males and 290 females on a mezzanine level. Other accommodation

Page 129: Hugh Kidman portfolio 2010 to 2015

provided in the complex includes the local offices for the PVPV as well as residences for the Imam and Muathen. (Muezzin)

Role during project Concept design and development. Following schematic design, the work was passed on to our Amman Office. During this later stage it was my responsibility to review design development, work progress and design changes.

Project description: This project represents the realisation of a headquarters building for the prestigious group of hospitals in the Dr Suleiman Al Hobayb group. The headquarters building is designed to be a landmark project of great stature along the new Airport Road to the north of Riyadh. The building will be home to executive suites and offices as well

as a training centre and conference facilities to serve the medical group. The initial design intent was to obtain a planning approval deviation from 2 and a half levels maximum building height to a new building height of 6 floors. Our proposal looked at maintaining the FAR of the building whilst using innovative design elements to retain privacy to the residential area to the east of the site. The primary challenge of the site is the approach which is taken from the high speed Airport Road and enters an area of one way routes which restrict movement to and from the site. We were also faced with trying to remove all traffic from the adjacent local road and were restricted from creating an entrance on the same local road.

Project description The proposed GOSI medical Centre is a complex building that will be developed as a market leader in terms of medical service provision at an international level. The building will be at the forefront of providing the latest medical services and technology to customers from all around the world. As such the

building will be a landmark and a destination for both local and foreign health and medical tourism, quite unlike any other schemes in Saudi Arabia. The building accommodates areas for private practice clinics of varying size as well as major tenant spaces, offering services such as sports therapy, continued professional development, centralised procedures and surgery, a shared diagnostics centre and medical retail units. The project forms the bookend to the GOSI campus which is home to the GOSI office Park, the Granada mall and the GOSI Hilton (an award winning design for a 5 star hotel offer)

Project description: Al Ghad University, a leading medical educational institution in Saudi Arabia, commissioned O&A to design a prototypical college campus that provides for education in medical sciences including dentistry, pharmacology, as well as business science and IT. The University prototype had to deal with the intricate separation of male

and female while maximizing on shared services that are costly to replicate in these fields (Medical sciences). This entailed a combination of physical and timed separation strategies, with a concept that cleverly combined the two. The initial concept was applied to a site in East Riyadh which was linked to a proposed training hospital and subsequently we developed and created site adaptation packages of the masterplan for a further 11 sites at various sites around the Kingdom.

Role during project: Urban design concept leader from feasibility to concept development. As part of the process we carried out an analysis of each of the 12 sites of the universities to determine the

Project description: The podium which is located at the base of the CMA tower (the tallest building in Saudi Arabia), contains an auditorium as well as a roof top restaurant and is a showpiece at the base of the building and the heart of the KAFD masterplan. The podium is set under a glazed dia-grid skin which is lifted off the main mass of the tower.

Within this dia-grid cage, the podium mass is set. The design of the podium included the insertion of a dynamic and organic shroud of textured translucent cast glass panels which gives the mass the appearance of a sparkling jewel. The ‘jewel’ can be viewed from the outside plaza at the centre of the KAFD financial district. This complex form required substantial scientific design interrogation in order to resolve the complex issues of 3 dimensional curvature and panelisation. Together with AKTII, the tesselation was rationalised as much as possible to make the skin more viable. There have been a number of iterations of this project, exploring alternative materials and a resultant cost reduction. The current iteration shows a Timber panelled system

Page 177: Hugh Kidman portfolio 2010 to 2015

which is simpler and less costly, however in design terms the glass option is far more aesthetically pleasing.

Role during project: Design leader in terms of design and form rationalisation, coordination with consultants such as AKT II and Gehry Technologies to rationalise the design and explore buildability.

Project description: The development comprises a single tower building of 30 storeys providing 22 levels of ‘Shell & Core’ office accommodation, with each floor plate capable of providing single or double tenancy. The topmost level of accommodation is designed to be capable of incorporating a restaurant & servery with views across Riyadh.

With consideration to the presence of the residential areas to the west of the site, the building is arranged with the ‘Tower’ portion aligned with the set-back line fronting King Fahd in the east. The height of the lower parking structure at the rear of the building is kept to a minimum. The design incorporates retail space over two storeys (Ground & Mezzanine levels) with two entrances on the east elevation fronting the King Fahd Road. A vehicle drop off zone is provided in conjunction with a stepped plinth with landscaping. The main entrance to the Office accommodation is sited on the southern face of the building within the new side road. Parking spaces are provided within 7 levels of parking (4 levels of

The building is situated in the Jenadriyah festival grounds and is to be a showcase of the forward thinking of the ministry, while demonstrating the problems faced in Saudi Arabia at the moment in terms of consumption and wastage. The intent is to develop a building which in itself is an

exemplar of sustainable design but also showcases the way that architecture can play a part in the reduction of consumption of energy and water, both in the construction and operational phases, whilst housing a series of exhibitions related to the use of water and electricity in the Kingdom. As part of the exercise we had to develop strategies with regard to the intent and content of the exhibition. Laterin the design process, the content and operation of the exhibition was developed with a specialist exhibition consultant. The building is made up of 3 exhibition halls on 2 levels which are connected to a service spine building. The exhibition halls are constructed using Rammed earth technology. A separate roof structure provides a platform for

As part of the client review panel we were asked to step into a design role. The challenge was to create a memorable threshold-defining gateway structure that reflects the design ethos of the

KAFD development as whole. The gateways, located in two areas of the site, give grade level access to the core of the development and represents an import transition into the site. The mains structure is one of a steel frame wrapped in a polished copper skin. The skin of the structure lightly reflects the buildings above. The support structure is grounded in a reflection pond to reflect the gateway structure thereby creating eth sense of a gateway within a gateway.

Project description: Turubah was the first site to be given to Omrania and Associates to develop a new residential neighbourhood for the Ministry Of Housing. The Project came after extensive studies into development models for the Ministry to create a road map for site design on numerous sites widely located in the Western Region. The site became the first to be tested with the rules that

were established during this extensive research phase. The town is self-sustaining with local retail, schools, daily and Friday mosques, water treatment plants, communications facilities and substations. One of the challenges of the site was to create a public centre even though the site was positioned away from the commercial strip. The main concept was to internalize the public realm as a large landscaped Boulevard and park space. This pedestrian environment links the Friday mosque with the local mosque and kindergarten. Local schools were located at the periphery of the site to avoid congestion issues with the circulation of the site. These schools are however linked to the central boulevard to create direct

Page 203: Hugh Kidman portfolio 2010 to 2015

pedestrian access and a fully integrated pedestrian environment. The neighbourhood typology created a pedestrian centric environment, pushing the car into a secondary position, this is achieved by using shared surface conditions and traffic calming measures.

Project description: Al Hankiyah was the second site to be given to Omrania and Associates to develop a new residential neighbourhood for the Ministry Of Housing on the outskirts of Al Hanakiyah. The new town is self-sustaining with local retail, schools, daily and Friday mosques, water treatment plants, communications facilities and substations. One of the challenges of the site was to create a

public centre even though the site was positioned away from the commercial strip. The main concept was to internalize the public realm and connect it with two large landscaped Boulevards. These pedestrian boulevards and linear park spaces link the Friday mosque with the local mosques and kindergartens. Local schools were located at the periphery of the site to avoid congestion issues with the circulation of the site. These schools are however linked to the central boulevard to create direct pedestrian access and a fully integrated pedestrian environment.

Al-Hinakiya is designed to be an identifiable and livable spatial community; a place where people

Page 209: Hugh Kidman portfolio 2010 to 2015

want to belong to.The community has visible and identifiable activity nodes, promenades that connect its activities together, and a system of parallel spines that smoothly channels traffic in and out. The villas are clustered in an innovative approach that creates a variety of dynamic semi public-private spaces.

Project description: The Al Kamel site is located 10.7km from the centre of Al Kamel itself and 11 km from the nearest highway. The site is located along a wadi in spectacular countryside. As such the remoteness presents a number of issues. The access for one, is along a dirt track and will present problems when construction commences as the roads will need to be widened and upgraded just

to get construction vehicles to the site. There are no existing services including water and electricity. These services will need to be provided prior to construction. This is a challenge when considering the scheme provides for a housing development and independent community with schools retail , civil deference and police stations.

The proposal is based on the creation of a pattern of streets parallel to the existing road, making this concept strong and very efficient. The small but efficient clusters link to primary green belts which are orientated toward the edge of the wadi. This relationship means that all units benefit from the same relationship to the green spaces and

Page 217: Hugh Kidman portfolio 2010 to 2015

ultimately to the most valuable aspect of the site, the view. The proposal has a clear and direct pattern, but also maintains variety and interest as all of the plots are placed close to the central spaces. The rigidity of the pattern is broken down by introducing the two main connecting walkways. The Friday Mosque is placed at the highest point of the site, at the termination of one of these fingers. The raised elevation of the mosque at this point creates a visual landmark, not only for the site, but for its surroundings.

Project description: The scheme represents the development of a residential palace for the position of governor of Riyadh. The ADA commissioned Omrania to design a scheme that would accommodate the family of the governor as well as other immediate family members including their

entourage. A ceremonial Diwan has been designed to accommodate up to 400 important guests for special events within the palace grounds. This public building therefore presented a challenge in terms of separation of public, private and service areas and further echelons of privacy within the private zones in terms of visibility and access. The site is located next to the Makkah Highway and on the edge of the Wadi Hanifah. The proximity to the cliff edges offer interesting views abut also present security concerns. The style of the building is a modernist approach with simple intersecting massing. Separation is highlighted by the use of accent walls which are found in all of the buildings, thereby creating a unified style and palate of materials

A young and wealthy entrepreneur, Prince Mishaal wanted to develop his Wadi Hanifah farm home for his growing family and to accommodate his expanding formal entertainment calendar. The exclusive area in Wadi Hanifah is known for its lush date palm farms and the

palms dominate this wonderful cool environment in the harshness of the desert. The site has a number of existing buildings of varying quality set in amongst the trees, all of which will be demolished, to make way for the new Main Villa, Diwaniyah, Recreational building and other outbuildings all of which are not disturb the existing trees. The client wanted the style to be in the character of a French - Californian style of architecture, a conservative and unclear interpretation of a style. The challenge was to create a scheme which represents the values of the Prince without creating a pastiche of architectures, instead we focused on ordered proportions and well considered compositions, to invoke a sense of the grandeur and order of a typical country Chateau.
