DIRECTOR’S NOTES
Let us all keep Nick Vento’s family in our thoughts & prayers. October Sunday rides were diminished by foul weather, but we got in Hurley Mountain Inn & Alaska Pete’s led by RC John H. Sunday, November 5th begins “POLAR HOG” with KSU moving to 10 AM from McDs. A special POLAR HOG will take place November 12th with Bobby B. leading a ride to Katz’s Deli in lower Manhattan. Our “Endless Mountains” ride to the Wellsboro area was filled with great scenery, good friends and some dirt & gravel roads – now everyone on the ride is “CERTIFIED”. The October REDS was on Friday evening 10/13 at Casa Del Mare in Upper Nyack. Very well attended – fun had by all. Sunday Chapter Member Rides will be “Polar HOG” rides beginning on November 5th KSU changes to 10 AM – Daylight Saving Time ends that weekend too. We had good participation in the Nyack Halloween Parade – many came in costume and had a ball. Hudson Valley NY HOGs Annual Holiday Party is Saturday, January 6th, 2018 from 7PM -11PM at the Blauvelt Knights of Columbus on Erie Street. The subsidized cost for members & guests is $ 45 PP. Music by DJ JT all night, antipasto, top-notch buffet dinner with many choices & carving stations from Bailey’s Smokehouse, coffee & dessert. Open bar too. Safety Tips
The ABC’s of Safely Travelling and Changing Travel Lanes During A Group Ride
When participating in a group ride there are some obvious differences in comparison to riding solo or in a pair. I realize this material may be deemed by some to be simplistic, obvious and repetitive, but, violations of these safety practices are witnessed on every group ride we stage.
A: Follow the staggered formation pattern with two seconds spacing between you and the rider directly ahead of you and one second between you and the rider in your forward wing position. This provides adequate time, distance and spacing for you to slow, stop, move or react in the event of an urgent or emergent situation. Larger spaces result in separation of the group, loss of trailing riders, unsafe penetration by other vehicles, and, diminished satisfaction on the part of the riders behind you. Consistent with this, stay in your lane: do not drift or hotdog it. It is unsafe, not to mention confusing and unnerving to riders behind you and operators of vehicles sharing the road with the group. Remember to let vehicles penetrate the line to allow them to exit. They are going to do it one way or another, so, provide a path for it to happen safely and uneventfully.
B: Follow the leader. The lead Road Captain controls the direction and flow of the ride. Do not change lanes until the leader changes lanes, followed by an orderly, sequential peel-off of the trailing riders. The Sweep Captain will work in concert with the Lead Captain, moving into the target travel lane to block aggressive traffic from encroaching on the lane. Do not prematurely change lanes…wait for the rider ahead of you to move over first, then, follow. Remember to follow the leader: do not “follow the follower”.
C: Pass the signals along in proximity to the hazard and mark turns for riders who are out of the line of sight behind you. Ride your mirror. When the group changes the direction of travel, look in your mirror. If you do not see the rider following you, pull to the side of the road before the turn, in a safe, visible position; turn on your 4-way flashers and wait until the trailing rider(s) are clearly into view, then, progress to re-join the ride.
Have a safe and enjoyable show-and-go riding season. It will be April before you know it. It happens every year!
Best wishes to all for a Happy Holiday Season.
