Happy New Year………...

Welcome to the January edition of your Hucclecote Link.

I trust that when you receive this you will either be about to, or will have had a fun and festive Christ-

mas period and are now looking towards celebrating the new year ahead and all that it may hold.

2013 is going to be a celebratory year in ’The L-D’ (Link Directories) household, with both myself

and my husband celebrating certain milestone birthdays, along with some very good friends of ours -

I feel a few parties on the horizon!! I’m due to be an Auntie again this year , and I’m Matron of

honour for one of my best friends at her wedding taking place later in the year - think its time for the

diet and fitness to start before the celebrations begin!!

If New Year is a time that you also start to think about diet and

fitness for the year ahead - and yes I know we all start with good

intentions, but I plan on sticking to it this year!!

The Hucclecote Link can help point you in the right direction.

For fitness we have many hotels in the local area offering special

offers at their gyms - Cheltenham Chase on the front cover, Spirit

Health club opposite on page 2. If going to the gym isn’t up your

street - we have a personal trainer on page 11 who can come to

you.

If you are looking to loose weight after the Christmas excess, we

have details on the Cambridge Weight loss plan on page 11, or

you should have received a leaflet with this directory with infor-

mation on local Rosemary Conley classes.

If you are someone who makes New Years Resolutions each year,

but never sticks to them, read our article on page 22,23 which

includes a 7 point plan to help you stick to your resolutions this

year. One of my business New Years resolutions is to start a Blog,

so keep your eyes peeled for further information on this.....and

remember, as always we can be found on our Face book page;

www.facebook.com/TheLinkDirectories or on twitter;

www.twitter.com/@Sarah_Gerken we would love to connect with

you.

Congratulations to Jane Hall for winning last months Sudoku competition, tickets to Cineworld

Gloucester will be on their way to you. Please feel free to email me your Sudoku entries if you so

wish: [email protected]

May I wish you all a Happy New Year and lots of success in 2013

Sarah.

Dave’s top tips

Finding level Levels come in many shapes, and each one has its own uses. A nine inch torpedo level is

a handy item to have around to maybe level a bathroom cabinet, and a magnetic one is

perfect for certain things like leveling a steel radiator. But it is not a good idea to try level-

ing a large surface with one when a four or six foot level would give much more accurate

results.

A line level is necessary when a string line needs to be level, and no other level is going to

take its place in a pinch. They hook right onto the string, they are small, and they are

cheap.

A graduated level is used for plumbing work and will have marks to set the fall or drop of

the pipe without having to constantly measure it, water after all does not like to flow uphill

unless under pressure.

Laser levels although fairly expensive are handy once again in certain places and can save

you a great deal of time in many applications.

Be sure to check out our website at www.dstevens999.co.uk for more top tips along with

some great video tutorials to help you with your DIY skills

Regards

Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you.

• Firm around any shrubs or plants that have been loosened by the wind this pre-vents hollows in the soil filling with water and freezing during the very cold weather.

• Prune back Wisteria; doing this at this time of year will encourage them to produce flower buds rather than lots of leaf. Cut back side shoots to 3’’-4’’ from the main stems

• Hellebores (Christmas Rose) remove any leaves which are marked with black blotches (this is a leaf spot disease) take these and burn them, this will help keep the plants clean and disease free, new leaves will quickly appear. If it snows! Take the time to go out and with a bamboo cane knock the snow off ever-green plants and conifers, it helps prevent them breaking under the weight of the snow. LawnsLawnsLawnsLawns

• Try and stay off lawns at this time of year especially if they are waterlogged or its frosty Put your mower in for a service and get the blades sharpened.. Fruit and VegetablesFruit and VegetablesFruit and VegetablesFruit and Vegetables

• Dig parsnips and leeks

• Towards the end of the month cover an area of the Veg plot with fleece, plastic or cloches this will help warm up the soil for the spring, dry up the surface to give you a head start on the season.

• Seed potatoes should appear in garden centres this month, get in early whilst there is a good choice of varieties. Stand them on end in a seed tray in a light frost free place this encourages them to produce short shoots/sprouts called ‘chits’. This ensures they get off to a good start when you plant them out in the spring. Continue to prune apples and pears but not plums cherries or any stone fruits as dis-ease can get into these at this time of year. GreenhouseGreenhouseGreenhouseGreenhouse

• If your greenhouse is empty, clean and fumigate ready for the new season. You can force a few early crops like winter lettuce, lambs lettuce radishes etc.. For an early crop of potatoes try planting an early variety in a large pot and keep in the greenhouse with luck you should get a crop in April Ventilate cold houses on mild sunny days to stop condensation building up and causing fungal diseases General TipsGeneral TipsGeneral TipsGeneral Tips Take your old Christmas tree for recycling and get out and about and have a look in the local garden centres they also have January sales and it’s a great time to catch a bar-gain! So you’ve given up on your New Year’s Resolutions already! Just like last year and the year before that and for more years than you choose to remember. Join the ‘not so very’ exclusive club! So, why do so many of us choose to punish ourselves in this way every new year, when clearly making (that’s the easy bit!), or rather, sticking to our new year’s resolutions rarely works? Answer: because we don’t know an alternative way. Who is motivated on a long term basis by having a daily reminder of what we ‘should’ or ‘ought’ to be doing or not doing stuck on a fridge magnet? Not many of us. So, how can we increase our odds of success? Well most of us are motivated one way or another by an instinctive search for happiness. We hold the belief that we might find this if we lose weight, give up smoking, change our job etc. We might well be right but are we adopting the best approach to yield success? Possibly not. The good news is that there is plenty we can do to ensure our dreams become a reality at any time of year, if we go about it in the right way.

Try this 7 Step Plan below for size. Step One: You need a destination, so set yourself a SMART goal. Specific - what exactly do you want to achieve? Measurable - how will you know when you have achieved it? What will the evidence be? Achievable – try chopping a large goal into bite sized chunks to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Realistic - is it possible to achieve within the timeframe you want, using your current or potential skills? Time bound – set yourself a deadline with appropriate milestones along the way. Step Two: Write down your goal in a positive way and try to phrase the outcome as if you had already achieved it. E.g. “It’s 1st July and I look fantastic at Jane’s wedding in my size 12 white linen trouser suit.” There are a couple of reasons why you should do this. Firstly it will get you to visualise what success will look, feel, and sound like. This will increase your motivation and hunger to achieve your goal. Then comes the scientific part… Our subconscious is a great ally and

will work hard to make happen the things we express in the present tense, as if they were already true. Research shows that our chances of achieving our goal are significantly increased by following this step. Step Three: Consider what has stopped you from achieving your goal so far. Be tough with yourself. How many of these blocks are self-limiting beliefs or excuses? Most of us have a stash of these somewhere to draw on when we’re in danger of coming out of our comfort zone! If you are to achieve something worth having, it is going to take effort and commitment. Carry on doing the same things and you will get the same results. Step Four: Make a list of all the things you COULD do to achieve your goal. Be brave! Step out of your current reality and do a bit of day dreaming. What would other people you admire do in this situation? What would be the most out-of-character action you could take to achieve your desired goal? Don’t worry, you’re not committing yourself to a string of crazy actions but simply being open to all possibilities. When you think you have exhausted your list of possible options, ask yourself for two more for luck. Step Five: Next, consider carefully the pros and cons of

each option you came up with in Step 4, including what help and support you would need for each. Now you are ready to identify your chosen course of action. You should feel excited by it and even possibly a little scared! That’s the stretch which will move you forward! Step Six: Now write down the step by step actions which are going to move you towards achieving your goal. Make sure you can trace them back to your main goal and that each stage has a deadline. You might want to use the SMART guide again from Step One. Step Seven: You now need to check out your level of commitment and enthusiasm for carrying out these actions! Try scoring them on a scale of 1-10 (1 = very low, 10 = very high). Anything less than a 7 and you need to retrace your steps to see where your block is. If you score 8 or above, ask yourself what would make it a 10 to squeeze out every opportunity to succeed!

So, stop feeling guilty about ditching your New Year’s Resolutions and channel your energy instead into setting goals you really want to, and will, achieve at any time of year! Good luck!

Hucclecote Townswomen GuildHucclecote Townswomen GuildHucclecote Townswomen GuildHucclecote Townswomen Guild November meeting of Hucclecote T G found Mr. Peter Berry, in his talk entitled “Khyber or Bust” telling us and showing slides of his long awaited journey by steam train to and through the Khyber Pass ,arguably the most dangerous 30 miles of railway track in the world! Permission for the trip had to be given by the Pakistani Government, and start-ed in Islamabad, continued to Peshawar by private train, then to Maderabad (the birth place of the Taliban!) with photo opportunities at designated stopping places along the route, finally to the Khyber Pass, plus armed guard for the train for this part of the jour-ney! The train is pulled through the pass, by two engines to make sure that it is out of the pass by sunset, as the only law in the pass is administered by various Tribal Chiefs! The railway line (built by the British) rises by 2,000 feet to the summit, through 18 tunnels, all the bridges are guarded by soldiers- the trip takes 4 hours and though people were seen at the side of the track, no agriculture or animals were seen, so it was difficult to imagine how the people supported themselves. The train stopped at the summit at the Afghani-stan border where the crests and badges of the various Regiments which have and contin-ue to protect the border were seen displayed on the mountainsides still well maintained. A very interesting and ‘different’ talk. The first meeting of the New Year will take place on Thursday January 17th at Hucclecote Community Centre at 7-30pm and is a talk given by Jill Ruiz about “Lives of Narrow-boat Women and Their Crafts “.

Hucclecote Horticultural Society

2012 is now over, and I think it is fair to say that our members have enjoyed a well

balanced year of meetings, covering a wide variety of topics, with something to suit

all tastes. Next year’s programme is already put to bed by our Chairman and Pro-

gramme Secretary Jan.

As a flavour of what we have in store, how about climate change, orchids, wildlife

in the garden, propagation and lilies. Not to mention our popular Members’ evening

and a quiz. Sounds good to me, so why not come along and join us. We are also

looking at suitable venues for our proposed day trip, after a really excellent day at

Wisley in 2012.

After our December break, we will be resuming on Thursday 24th January with a

welcome visit from Julie Ritchie of Hoo House nurseries, following up on our visit

there during 2011, and talking to us about the opportunities of using perennials to

give us flowers throughout the year.

All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, and start at 7.30 pm. All are

welcome: attendance and membership are not restricted to Hucclecote residents.

HUCCLECOTE SCOUT GROUP The Scouts conservation project on Hucclecote fields went well

and we cut back quite a lot of the overgrown hedge row. The break for

bacon butties and a drink went down very well. The Cub camp at

Cranham went well, even if the weekend was rather wet but they man-

aged to get out into the woods for some activities. The theme of the

weekend was Egypt with building pyramids as one of the tasks.

All the units are having their Christmas parties with plenty of

games, food and drink, we all start back in January the week the

schools go back.

The older Scouts start their rehearsal for the annual Christmas pantomime which

this year is Cinderella, the Scouts and their parents plus the Explorers come along to

watch the show.

With over 40 already booked for next years Summer camp near Newquay and still

a few more coming in, numbers will be as many as usual.

The Scout group is run completely by volunteers and is self supporting with no

grants at all (as are most Scout groups). Our thanks to everyone who help out in many

ways, not only the leaders but many parents and friends who help out when needed.

Although we do badge work and extra activities the group is still fairly traditional with

plenty of camping and outdoor activities.

Beavers are from 6 to 8, Cubs are 8 to 10, Scouts 10 to 14 followed by the Explorers up

to 18. Please phone Terry on 521664 for more information.

'New Year, New Start!

Like many people I make promises and resolutions in January that are

soon forgotten in the year. This year I am determined to follow my new

resolution which is to spend some time each day in stillness and silence to

eradicate some of the noise and busyness that pervades every area of life.
