TOURISM IN TALLINN July 2009 In July 2009, 371,000 tourists stayed in Estonian accommodation establishments, 48% of whom stayed in Tallinn.

Length of stay remains almost unchanged

The average length of stay for tourists was 1.75 nights (-1%).

Compared with previous months this year, the length of stay of domestic tourists showed a notable increase due to the favorable development of leisure travel.

82% of accommodated tourists arrived for holidays

83% of foreign tourists stay in Tallinn for leisure purposes, 14% for business, 2% for attending a conference and 1% for other purposes.

67% of domestic tourists visit for leisure purposes, 20% for business, 8% for attending conferences and 5% for other purposes.

Room occupancy rates and average price of bednights** decreased

In July 416 accommodation establishments offered accommodation services for tourists. The room occupancy rate was 65%, 2 percentage points lower than in July of the previous year.

The average cost of a bednight in an accommodation establishment was 499 kroons, which is 11% (60 kroons) less expensive compared to July 2008.

Travellers by air and by sea decreased

The number of passengers at Tallinn Airport was 128 300, down 26% compared with July the year before. The number of passengers passing through the Tallinn Old Harbour totaled 963 500, down by 4% compared with July last year.

Growth in visits to Tallinn Tourist Information Centres

Altogether 37,000 visitors (+23%) visited Tallinn’s tourism information centres in July.

Tourists staying in Tallinn’s accommodation establishments

During the period from January to July 2009, a total of 630,100 tourists stayed in Tallinn’s accommodation establishments (9% less tourists compared with same period in 2008). Altogether a total of 554,600 foreign tourists used the services of accommodation establishments (-7% or 42,400 tourists). The number of domestic tourists decreased somewhat, numbers accommodated fell 25%, by 21,800 tourists, for a total of 75,500. Bednights spent by tourists also shrank during the first seven months, with a total of 1,087,800 bednights (-12%) spent in Tallinn’s accommodation establishments. While bednights by foreign tourists shrank by 9% (totalling 964,600 bednights), bednights by Estonian residents were down by 28% (total 122,400 bednights).

In the in the first seven months of 2009 the average length of stay continued to decline and it was 1.73 nights (-3%). The longest stays in Tallinn were in January and July, and the shortest were in February and March. Compared to the previous year, the average length of stay decreased the most in February.

During the first seven months the average trip length among foreign tourists shortened by 2%, from 1.78 to 1.74 nights. The length of stay for domestic tourists decreased even more, from 1.76 to 1.62 nights, or 8 percentages points.
