Choosing a theme for your wedding day is a fabulous
way to guide the design and planning process for your
event. It can help you determine your color palette,
decorations and menu.
A pair of avid Colorado runners, who incidentally won
a race for a free wedding, incorporated their love for the sport
into their special day. “We thought it would be fun to tie in their
love of racing,” says Dana Dunphy of revel & bloom, wedding
and event design. “We planned the entire event as if guests
were witness to their ‘Race to the Altar.’” The bar became a
hydration station. Seating cards were disguised as race results.
And tables were marked as miles. Treats included individual
candy race medals.
Another couple captured a love of the outdoors, eclectic
style and down-home charm in their country wedding at
the Lyons Farmette. Decorations complete with burlap and
chicken wire added to the country theme. Sweet mason jars
filled with honey and topped with printed fabric served as gifts
for their guests. A barbeque dinner served farm-style on one
long table brought guests together before the evening wrapped
up with a live bluegrass band.
Creating your special theme is as easy as honing in on
what you love. Here are more ideas to get you dreaming.
VintageThink early ’60s, Mad Men style: shifts, wasp-waists and
fedoras. Signature cocktails, beef wellington and chocolate
éclairs round out the menu.
MoDernWhite anemone flowers have a quintessential modern
look. Pair the white and black buds with crisp white and
emerald green. Color blocking is a great way to say “modern.”
WorLD traVeLIf you and your betrothed have a case of wanderlust,
why not incorporate your love of travel into your wedding day?
Design elements might include vintage suitcases, postcards
with landmarks from around the world and luggage tags for
place cards.

CuLinary DeLigHtMake food the highlight of your event. Do something out
of the ordinary, such as a wine and cheese tasting or having a
chef on hand preparing food to your guests’ delight.
garDen PartyTopiaries, butterflies and flowers galore can create a
gardenscape for your festivities. Choose small round tables
with floral fabric tablecloths and spring posie centerpieces.
City CHiCStart with a venue that offers immaculate views of the
city. Pick a palette of black, white and gray. Feel free to add hints
of one color if you must. Top it off with ultra-mod graphic
elements on your stationery and cake.
VaLentine’S DayGo all red or all pink for this special hearts-and-
flowers day. Or skip the formal setting altogether. Grab your
dress, gal pals and, of course, your guy and head off to a
group wedding event.
WooDLanDThink carpets of moss covering food display tables;
pieces of Aspen holding place cards printed on a rustic kraft
paper; and terrarium centerpieces gracing each table.

BirDSGet carried away with a bird theme. Choose a robin’s egg
blue and soft brown for everything from your cake to vintage
birdcage decorations. Or maybe a peacock feather is your entire
inspiration–iridescent blue and green…
CoLorSColors are, of course, an easy way to theme your wedding.
Hot combos: orange and turquoise; yellow and gray; rainbow.
Ombre palettes are hot. Choose a monochromatic scale of mint
green or nectarine.
nautiCaLThis theme requires stripes. Decorate with bold blocks
of bright yellow and navy. A compass on your stationery and in
the decorations symbolizes your love as a guide that keeps you
on course.
Winery WeDDingYou don’t have to go to Napa Valley to have a winery
wedding. Colorado offers breathtaking views and vineyards,
especially on the Western Slope.
Lounge-StyLeIf you’re a city girl, capture your urban style with a lounge
theme. Make “rooms” with gauzy white curtains. Group white
sofas and modern chairs around shiny, white coffee tables.
Turn on the glitz with purple lighting that creates a glow
everywhere, and add shiny purple accents throughout.
