A GUIDE TO SEARCHING CINAHL A Database for Nurses
& Allied Health Professionals
WHAT IS CINAHL? Cinahl provides indexing/abstracts for 3,000 journals from the fields of nursing
and allied health.
Cinahl Plus with Full-Text is the world’s most comprehensive source of full-
text nursing and allied health journals, providing full-text for 750+ journals
indexed in Cinahl.
HOW TO GET CONNECTED Go to www.hselibrary.ie and enter your Athens username & password in the
ATHENS LOGIN box on the left of the screen.
Select EBSCOhost Databases from the list of available resources
Select Cinahl Plus with Full Text from the list of databases
SUBJECT SEARCH Before you begin, ask yourself what are the key concepts in your question.
List them on paper– these are your search terms.
E.g. the management of cancer pain in children
There are three key concepts in your topic: cancer, pain and children.
List other terms that might express the same concepts.
E.g. cancer, neoplasms, child, infant, etc.
Enter your search terms and click on the drop-down menu (Select a
Field) to redirect your search term to more specific database fields:
Author, Journal Title, Word in Subject Heading, etc. (see e.g. on p. 2)

REFINING YOUR SEARCH Search Options are available on the main search page to help you
refine/limit your search. Search options include:
Publication Date
Full-Text
Research Articles
Evidence Based Practice
Age Groups
Select the search options you want to use and click the Search button at the
top of the screen. The results page will now display the results of your refined
search.

Here are the results of the search on the management of cancer pain in
children.
At the top of the screen, 1-10 of 684 indicates that there are 684 results, with
10 results listed on each page. All results are in reverse chronological order,
beginning with the most current result.
To temporarily store articles of interest, click the Add to Folder button.
To access stored articles, click Folder View on the right of the screen.
From here you can print, email and save your results.

To limit your results to full-text only:

Tick the Full-Text box on the right of the screen
Click the Update Results button
From the original 684 results, there are 128 available full-text.
Click the PDF Full-Text icon to open a full-text article.
The PDF may take a few moments to open. To print, save or email the article,
select the appropriate icon within the PDF document.
COMBINING SEARCHES
When developing your search, you may find it useful to combine the results of
two or more sets from your overall search strategy. You can combine

searches by clicking the Search History/Alerts button (above your results on
the main search page).
1. Select the searches you want to combine by ticking the relevant boxes
2. Click Add to place these items into the search box
3. Finally click Search
SAVING SEARCHES
From the Search History/Alerts page, you can also save your search
history, log off and return at a later date to continue your search.

Before you can save searches, you need to login to your personal
account by clicking Sign in to My EBSCOhost (towards top of
screen).
When you do this for the first time, click I’m a New User to register.
Once registered, enter your EBSCOhost username & password and
click the Login button.
To save your current search click Save Searches/Alerts. Enter a
name for your search and click Save. To retrieve the search at a later
date, sign into My EBSCOhost and click Retrieve Searches.
Remember to sign out of My EBSCOhost at the end of your session
(the sign out button is at the top of your screen).

AUTHOR, TITLE & JOURNAL SEARCH
To find a specific citation/reference, enter some or all of the following
information into the search boxes on the main search page:
Author
Title (i.e. article title)
Journal Title
From the drop-down menus, select the appropriate search fields and click
Search. It’s not necessary to enter search terms into all the boxes. The
results page will now display the results.
EVIDENCE-BASED CARE SHEETS
Select this option at the top of the main search page to view information
leaflets dealing with prognosis and diagnosis. Conditions are listed
alphabetically. A search option is also available.

QUICK LESSONS
Provides a synopsis on a variety of topics. This option is also available from
the main search page. Click More and select Quick Lessons.
ASK-A-LIBRARIAN
If you need assistance with a search or are looking for a specific article, the
Ask-A-Librarian option allows you to email your enquiry to a librarian from the
HSE Regional Library Service, who will contact you to assist with same.
