HSA SPELLERS SHINE AT
CONCEPT SPELLING BEE
The winners of our school spelling bee
went on to compete in the annual Con-
cept Spelling Bee at University of Illi-
nois Chicago on December 10th and as
per usual, they did not disappoint. Our
spellers took home the gold and won
first place overall in the 6th-8th grade
division and second place in the 3rd-
5th grade division. This is the fourth
year that our savvy spellers represented
HSA Belmont as a winning school and
brought home a trophy. Congratula-
tions to Ms. Petrella and Ms. Mann,
who coached and accompanied our stu-
dents. Winners included eighth graders
Amya Washington (pictured) and Khiy-
la Pittman (pictured) and 5th grader
sKenya Smith and Ashuntice Wilburn.
ROBOTICS STARS
Our FLL robotics team, the
Eagle Bots, had an amazing
year, to say the least. After
out-performing at the re-
gionals and advancing to the
STATE championship, the
Eagle Bots went on to place
28th out of 64 teams in the
state-wide competition. A
special thanks goes out to
Mr. Coffee, Ms. Daos and
Mr. Jusupov for leading our
students to success!

NEW YEAR FOCUSES ON HEALTH & WELLNESS
The first annual Health & Wellness Week
was a fun and educational way to learn
about keeping healthy and happy in the
new year. Themed days and activities
marked a week-long celebration of how
to make healthy choices fun for the
whole family. Students were encouraged
to try new foods that tasted good and
were good for them, amp up their exer-
cise routine and encouraged to get plenty
of rest with Friday pajama day. The ac-
tivities culminated with a fantastic
Health and Wellness Fair that brought in
local representatives from XSport Fit-
ness, Esperanza Chicago, Community
First Medical Center and many more. At-
tendees also got a taste of delicious cui-
sine from The Chef in the Hood, Ramona
Baptiste, who created an amzing veggie
stir-fry and participated in FREE yoga
and group fitness classes. Way to put
health first HSA Belmont!
HONOR ROLL STUDENTS’ THEATRE EXPERIENCE
As a special treat for achieving at the highest academic level, sixty our honor roll students trav-
eled downtown to DePaul’s Merle Reskin Theatre and fell in love with Night Runner. The play
tells the tale of Cora, a young slave who escapes plantation life after her family has been torn
apart. She is
helped along
her journey
by the night
runner, a
Harriet Tub-
man-like
character
that leads
slaves to
freedom.
Live theatre
certainly
suits our
students!
The 7th grade
class got to expe-
rience the world of
astronomy and
astrophysics dur-
ing their visit to
the Adler Plane-
tarium. Future
space explorers
investigated solar
systems and mis-
sions to the moon
at Chicago’s very
own premiere
space destination.

National School Choice Week is the nation’s largest-ever education celebration. The week-long event provides school, individuals and organizations with the opportunity to cele-brate the benefits of all types of choices in edu-cation— from tradi-tional public schools to public charter schools, magnet schools, online academies private schools and home-schooling. We honored our choice by creating a NSCW photo booth and our kids had a blast!

MILWUAKEE
MATH CAMP MOLDS YOUNG
MINDS Our dedicated teachers and stu-
dents didn’t stop going just because
it’s holiday break. Instead, they
came together as mathletes and em-
barked on an excursion to Milwau-
kee Math and Science Academy for
three fun-filled days of learning,
bonding and excitement. Title 1
math teacher Mr. Kaya, Mr. Coffee,
Ms. Daos, Mr. Stone, Mrs. Durst
and Mr. Jusupov took 28 of our stu-
dents over state lines where they
were immersed in advanced
math study sessions, creative games
and outdoor activities for a well-
rounded session that kept their
brains working during their time
off. Kudos to our kids and awesome
teachers for putting learning first!

Winter Concert Our first musical performance of the year, led by Ms. Arnold, gave the whole school some holiday spirit. Our melodious students sang their hearts out to traditional holiday songs and brought all of their hard work throughout the semester to life. Students and parents alike eagerly watched the return of our music program to the school. Congratu-lations to all of our singers and to Ms. Arnold for conducing our little stars.
CYSP students traveled to Lake Geneva and got the
chance to go horseback riding, despite the chilly
weather, and tour Yerkes Observatory.
Fourth grade students visit the Aurora Sci-Tech
Museum for their fall field trip.
