Incumbents will participate in the necessary classroom training and on the job training, as identified in the Standards of Apprenticeship, to complete the program. Upon successful completion, a DOL “Certificate of Completion” will be presented. Incumbents in the HVAC Technician series install, maintain, and repair campus heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems and controls. Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities The HVAC Technician Apprentice reports to a Foreman. This classification has no supervisory responsibilities. Typical Functions 1. Acquires skills to and/or performs preventive maintenance, adjustments, and basic repairs on both pneumatically controlled and digitally controlled HVAC systems. 2. Performs scheduled inspections and preventive maintenance on HVAC systems and equipment, including replacing filters, cleaning coils, washing air intakes, and other duties to maintain a clean system. 3. May maintain and service department specialized equipment. 4. Maintains records, including disposal of hazardous materials and treatment chemicals, work orders, time cards, and billing. 1

Summary

Incumbents in the HVAC Technician Apprentice position take part in a four year, Utah Department of Labor approved, Apprenticeship Program. Incumbents will participate in the necessary classroom training and on the job training, as identified in the Standards of Apprenticeship, to complete the program. Upon successful completion, a DOL “Certificate of Completion” will be presented.

Incumbents in the HVAC Technician series install, maintain, and repair campus heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems and controls.

2. Ability to use computer-based monitoring and control devices for maintenance and troubleshooting.

3. Ability to learn about or knowledge of various testing equipment and techniques.4. Ability to read and interpret blueprints for designing projects.5. Ability to use hand and power tools common to trade.6. Basic computer skills.7. Ability to work with limited supervision.8. Customer service skills.9. Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and customers.10. Ability to complete the classroom training and on the job training required to complete the

apprenticeship program.

Minimum Qualifications

HVAC aptitude is required. Aptitude is defined as passing the Wiesen Test of Mechanical Aptitude (WTMA), with a score of 70% or higher.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

The position requires considerable physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position, including heavy lifting and/or pushing and pulling of heavy objects. Employees must be prepared to assume uncomfortable positions such as crawling, kneeling, and squatting. Additionally, the work environment can include confined or narrow spaces. Employees must adhere to safety precautions and may be required to use protective equipment. Fundamental Abilities
