• Regenerated Murad Khani, the heart of Kabul’s Old City, by restoring and rebuilding 150 historic buildings, providing water supply, sanitation and electricity, and building a primary school and clinic which has served over 100,000 patients.

• Trained over 6,000 artisans and builders, and created the Institute for Afghan Arts and Architecture to train the next generation of craftspeople.

• We have created the Institute for Afghan Arts and Architecture, the country’s premier crafts vocational training institution, with internationally accredited three-year courses in calligraphy, miniature painting, ceramics, jewellery and gem-cutting, and woodwork.

• We have trained and supported 1,000 artisans, and now support 127 craft workshops and businesses across Afghanistan.

• We have sold $6 million of their products to five-star hotels and renowned designers around the world.

• Turquoise Mountain has restored and rebuilt 150 historic and community buildings, training over 4,000 builders.

• In 2013, we won a UNESCO Cultural Heritage Award.

• The Turquoise Mountain Family Health Clinic serves over 20,000 patients a year (70% of whom are female) and has served over 100,000 to date.

• Each year over 120 children attend the Turquoise Mountain Primary School.

• Turquoise Mountain has trained over 100 jewellers and other artisans to set the gold standard for the craft industry, and is now working with textile weavers and artisans across Myanmar.

• Our jewellery workshop is selling lines designed by Pippa Small, the UK’s Ethical Jeweller of the Year in 2015, and others, through luxury retailers such as Barneys NY and Net-a-Porter.

• Myanmar artisans are now supplying high-end products for luxury hotels and clients in Myanmar and internationally.

• In 2016, we completed the restoration of 491-501 Merchant Street in Yangon’s Historic Downtown, the first done to international standards.

• We have trained 250 people in building and conservation work.

• We have now taken on the regeneration of the landmark Tourist Burma building, which will be reopened to the public and serve as a training ground for 1,000 more people.

• We have celebrated the value and beauty of Saudi crafts traditions, showcasing Saudi crafts in high-profile exhibits, and linking artisans with international designers and trainers, to encourage knowledge exchange and collaboration across cultures.

• Working in pairs, Afghan, Saudi, Myanmar, British, American and Swiss artisans collaborated across cultures and created, in real time, new interpretations of their crafts.


V E N I C EB I E N N A L E ,I TA LY 2 0 0 9• East-West Divan: Contemporary Art from Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan featured 10 artists whose works reflected the links between the artistic traditions of Venice and Persia.

M U S E UM O FI S L A M I C A RT,D OH A 2 0 1 3• The exhibition was entitled Ferozkoh (Turquoise Mountain in Dari), Tradition and Continuity in Afghan Art.

• 16 of Turquoise Mountain’s artisans travelled to Qatar to spend time with pieces from the museum’s archives and then produced over 40 pieces to be displayed alongside these treasures.

L A T R I E N N A L E ,M I L A N , I TA LY 2 0 1 6• Turquoise Mountain partnered with Wallpaper Magazine and AfghanMade to showcase a new collection of handmade rugs from Afghanistan.

• The exhibition featured contemporary designs including works by Zaha Hadid, Scholten & Baijings, Junpei Tamaki, Christophe Pillet and Fredrikson Stallard, all produced by local craftsmen in Afghanistan.

• To mark the 70th birthday of HRH The Prince of Wales, the Summer Opening of the State Rooms at Buckingham Palace presented: Prince and Patron.

• The exhibition featured over 100 works of art personally selected by The Prince, alongside works created by young artists supported by three charities that HRH created: Turquoise Mountain, The Royal Drawing School and The Prince's School of Traditional Arts.

• Turquoise Mountain specialises in interiors and fit out for luxury hotels and private residences. These include the Connaught, the Four Seasons and private residences around the world.

• The Connaught Hotel, London, included a full suite of woodwork, designed by Guy Oliver with Naseer Yasna Mansouri called The Prince’s Lodge suite, including carving across bed frames, window bays, cabinets and panelling.

• The Four Seasons Hotel, Riyadh, commissioned decorative items such as trays, cushions and calligraphy.

• To date, we have generated millions of dollars in international sales for our artisans, working with prestigious retailers such as Kate Spade, Bloomingdales, Monsoon, The Conran Shop and the British Museum.

• Turquoise Mountain artisans have collaborated with a number of international designers including Guy Oliver, Pippa Small and Vicki Sarge.

• Pippa Small has produced 30 collections in collaboration with our jewellers since 2008. Pippa’s Turquoise Mountain pieces have been worn by celebrities such as Angelina Jolie, Yasmine Le Bon and Eva Longoria.

S O G H R AH U S S A I N I• Soghra Hussaini, born in Kabul, began studying calligraphy and miniature painting at the Institute for Afghan Arts and Architecture, hoping to generate an income to support her family.

• She has received a number of international commissions and has showcased her work at several exhibitions including the Smithsonian in Washington.

KO T I N W I N• Coming from a long line of goldsmiths in Ramree Island, Rakhine State, Ko Tin Win is a master goldsmith working at the Turquoise Mountain Myanmar workshop.

• He has helped to create iconic pieces designed in collaboration with award-winning UK designer Pippa Small.

O B A I D A H ,UM U HM E D• Obaidah comes from Farasan Island, and is a Saudi master jeweller and teacher.

• In September 2017, Amazon Fashion featured her collaboration with designer Vicki Sarge.

• Her story has been featured in Harpers Bazaar Arabia and her work was showcased in the 2018 Rooms Tokyo Trade Show.

M OATA Z• Moataz is a woodworker who founded his workshop with his partner Ossama in Amman, Jordan, after leaving Syria in 2012.

• Originally from Damascus, he learned his craft at a very young age.

• He specialises in the intricate mother of pearl inlay for which Syria is so famous.


D AW S IP H AW• 63-year-old Daw Si Phaw has spent 50 years weaving fabrics and longyis in the rural area of Kayah State in Eastern Myanmar.

• Knowing that Kayan traditional weaving is a dying craft, she has made it her mission to keep it alive.

• Daw Si Phaw has taught the craft to her daughters and continues to weave daily.

S A E E D AE T E B A R I• Saeeda Etebari, born in a refugee camp in Pakistan, was a student at the Turquoise Mountain Institute.

• She has been deaf since she was a young child, but demonstrated a real passion for jewellery making as a student.

• Saeeda now runs her own jewellery business and has exhibited at the Smithsonian and Buckingham Palace.

A B D U L M AT I NM A L E K Z A D A• Abdul Matin comes from a family of Afghan potters in Istalif who have been making distinctive turquoise pots in a 400-year unbroken line.

• He is one of the leading figures in the revival of Istalifi pottery, famed for its distinctive ishkar glaze.

• His work has been showcased at a number of international exhibitions, including the Smithsonian and Buckingham Palace.

H A N A NR AWA S• Hanan comes from Jeddah and was selected by her fellow artisans to represent them recently at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

• She and a group of women in Jeddah have joined together to launch a workshop creating plaster artwork hand-carved with designs traditional to the UNESCO world heritage site of Jeddah.
