ButinAugust,attitudeschangedas30-yearU.S.Treasurybondyieldsfelltoanewrecordlow,and10-yearyieldsinchedup.Whatthismeansisinvestorsareflockingtoinvestmentstheythinkare“safe,”andthey’rebiddingupthepricesomuchit’sdrivingtheyielddown.They’repayingmoreandmoreforlessinterest,justforthefeelingthatthey’llgettheirmoneyback.
WhydoesanybodycareaboutTreasuryyields?Well,biginvestorsseethosegovernmentbondyieldsastheultimateeconomicindicator.TheythoughttheAugustplungemeanttrouble,andarecessionwouldberightaroundthecorner.ThentradetensionsescalatedbetweentheU.S.andChina.Plus,theU.S.stockmarketbouncedaroundover10daysinAugust,whichwasthemostgloomymonthsinceFebruary2018.
