Rhodes College paid tribute to staff on May 20 with its annual Service Recognition Luncheon. Four Rhodes employees were recognized with the college’s 2009 Out-standing Staff Awards.

This year’s recipient of the Outstanding Administrative Services Staff award is Housekeeper Rosie Love who has served the college for 25 years. Nominators wrote, “She does so much for the college—not only in her work but in her relation-ship with others. Her kind and gentle spirit inspires us all to work even harder and be even nicer. Always willing to offer a hello and a smile, she has kept Palmer Hall and Kennedy Hall clean and tidy for many years!”

Pat Fetters, who is an Administrative Assistant II in the Office of the President, re-ceived the Outstanding Administrative Staff award. Her nominators wrote “Pat serves our community and guests of the college with a flair that rivals Ms. Emily Post,” and her example of service and loyalty to Rhodes “is one we all could fol-low.” Another nomination said, “Pat serves as a gatekeeper to the president and she does it in such a way that folks don’t even realize they wanted Dr. Troutt in the first place!”

Outstanding Administrator awards were presented to Greg Jones, Assistant Superintendent of Mainte-nance in Physical Plant, and Leigh Powell, Human Resources Business Systems Analyst.

Greg has been described as “one who puts Rhodes interest first, answering calls at night, on weekends and holidays without complaint.” Other comments about Jones include: “He is always willing to help with any problem. He is truly a dedicated professional.” “As a problem solver, he strives to increase system efficien-cies and reduce operating costs.” “Greg runs the campus from his laptop and the college would not have successful events without his help. Day and night he is always available.”

Leigh has been described as “welcoming, reliable, and meticulous in her duties, and also very active in the life of the college.” “She focuses on customer service,” wrote one nominator. “She brings a positive out-look and a gentle nature to work every day.” Another wrote, “The hallmarks of her service in Human Re-sources and the campus are confidentiality, consistency, and approachability.” In addition, Powell is an en-vironmental advocate for the campus.

New this year were the “Team Rhodes” Awards recognizing collaboration across departmental lines. The first team honored was the Rhodes Express Team. Members are Tracy Adkisson, Dorothy Brownyard, Lucy Black, Claire Coleman, and Liz Dodd. “This team has pioneered the concept of working across depart-mental lines [Bursar’s Office, Financial Aid, Registrar’s Office],” said Rhodes President William E. Troutt. “This team reviewed their own work processes, improved them, and then taught them to each other, all while keeping the student at the center of their work.”

“Our second team met every week for the past two years. They almost shut down the email system with the amount of email and documents they sent out for review and edit. They were given a specific charge: Full Accreditation Compliance, Zero Recommendations. They met that charge,” said Troutt about the SACS Reaccreditation Steering team. Mark Smith, Robert Strandburg, Bette Ackerman, Jay Eckles, Mac McWhirter, Glenn Munson, John Olsen, and Dwaun Warmack were the members recognized.
