IN FOCUS 1 In Focus Volume 60, Issue 11 November 2015 November Program 3D PSA Stereo Sequence Program presented by Lee Pratt & Andrea Shetley INSIDE THIS ISSUE: The HPS Program for November 9, 2015 will be in three dimensions (3D): the 2015 Photographic Society of America (PSA) Stereo Sequence Program. It consists of short sequences of images prepared by a number of photographers from different states and countries. First shown at the PSA Conference in September, this will be the second public presentation. A new digital 3D projection system will be demonstrated. A single 3D projector produces left and right images at rates above 100 times a second. A synchronized electrooptical crystal then converts the alternate images to left and right circularly polarized images. Ordinary 3D movie glasses are then worn by the viewers. Lee Pratt will present the program. In addition, Andrea Shetley and Lee will show 3D images from their recent trip to the PSA Conference, Yellowstone, and Grand Teton National Parks. INSIDE THIS ISSUE:

The  HPS  Program  for  November  9,  2015  will  be  in  three  dimensions  (3D):  the  2015  Photographic  Society  of  America  (PSA)  Stereo  Sequence  Program. A  synchronized  electro-‐‑optical  crystal  then  converts  the  alternate  images  to  left  and  right  circularly  polarized  images.

2   IN  FOCUS

From  The  President

Last  month  was  a  photo-‐‑opportunity  packed  time.    There  was  the  annual  Scott  Kelby  Photowalk  in  Athens,  the  Camera  Club  Council  of  Tennessee’s  field  trip  to  Reelfoot  Lake  and  Park  in  northwest  Tennessee,  the  annual  Old  Time  Fiddler’s  Convention  at  Athens  State  University  in  Athens,  the  AOPA  fly-‐‑in  in  Tullahoma,  and  the  Athens  Storytelling  Festival.    I  hope  you  managed  to  make  it  to  one  or  more  of  those  opportunities.    Even  if  you  didn’t,  the  weather  was  pretty  good  for  most  of  the  month  for  taking  photos.    The  leaves  are  turning,  so  get  out  and  find  those  colorful  spots  before  the  leaves  fall.

Larry  Perry,  from  Knoxville,  provided  our  monthly  program  for  October,  and  he  was  great,  as  usual.    Larry  demonstrated  four  very  affordable  photo  software  products.    He  used  one  of  them,  Pro  Show,  to  show  us  many  of  his  wildlife  photos,  along  with  discussing  the  techniques  he  used  to  capture

2

the  images.  Our  judge  for  October’s  “Open”  competition  was  Patrick

Oden.    Patrick  is  a  local  photographer,  with  street  photography  his  passion,  and  he  has  presented  and  judged  for  us  in  the  past.    I  think  he  is  one  of  our  best  judges,  providing  outstanding  comments,  along  with  taking  the  time  afterward  to  give  individual  critiques  to  our  members.    One  thing  Patrick  said  in  the  beginning  is  that  the  results  are  his  opinion,  colored  by  his  experience  and  likes.    I  say  this,  especially  for  our  new  competitors,  because  we  had  a  great  example  of  just  this  on  competition  night;  one  of  our  members  captured  1st  place  with  an  image  that  did  not  place  with  another  judge  in  a  previous  competition.    The  lesson  here  is  that  you  should  keep  competing,  if  you’re  passionate  about  your  image,  because  judging  is  not  totally  objective.    Be  sure  to  check  out  all  the  winners  on  the  website  gallery  and  in  the  newsletter.

Dusty  Doddridge  will  be  back  this  month  for  a  training  class  on  printing.    The  date  is  Saturday,  November  14th,  from  10:00  AM  to  2:30  PM,  at  the  Dynetics  facility.    Check  the  website  for  sign-‐‑up  instructions,  a  detailed  schedule,  and  directions.

Our  program  this  month  will  be  presented  by  Lee  Pratt  and  Andrea  Shetley  on  3D  photography.    This  is  always  a  fascinating  program,  so  don’t  miss  it.

The  November  competition  topic  is  “Leaf  and  Petal.”    With  the  trees  turning,  there  are  many  opportunities  for  great  shots  with  a  variety  of  lenses;  if  you  have  a  macro  lens,  this  is  a  great  topic  to  use  it  for.

              Eddie Sewall
