Chris Kirk is entering the Marines. Carter andJake Akins will be in the Navy. Zachary Lea,Tyler Nicholson and Eduardo Cruz are enteringthe Army, while Clay Lewis is headed to theAir Force.

Kirk, the son of Chad and Andrea Kirk, was thefirst to leave, as he is already in San Diego inbasic training for the U.S. Marines. He leftHowe on June 23.

"Ever since I was nine, I thought I was going tobe a Marine. It's what my dad was and so ismy brother (Matthew Conditt). And that helpedpush me forward." said Kirk.

Kirk said before he left that he was excited, butws starting to get a little nervous as the dategrew near.

"My dad and my brother told me that theyschedule things in three phases and the firstphase is the worst because they will try to weedout the people they don't want." said Kirk.

"After that, it's still hard, but not quite as hard asphase one." Kirk is entering in as a Private andhis goal is to be a Gunnery Sergeant before histerm is up.

Jake Akins decided on the U.S. Navy becuasehe was influenced by his grandfather, JerryLancaster, who served in the Army and was inVietnam.

Akins said that he chose the Navy because it fitwhat he wanted to do later on in life in themedical field.

"The fact that I can get out of Howe, Texasbecause I've been here for 18 years plus the factthat the education opportunity is good." saidAkins.

Akins said that he was brought up in a familythat believed that they should serve. His parentsare Greg and Sue Akins and he said that hisparents have mixed emotions about his newventure in life.

"Moms are moms. They don't want you to go,

Miltary Menbut they also do. They want to see you out inthe world. My dad is okay with it. He's mydad, so he's going to support me, but he knewall along from my childhood that this isprobably where I was going to go." saidAkins.

Akins said he has no idea where he goes fromhere. He said that he could only put in fouryears, but doesn't discount that he could serve20.

He said that ultimately, he'd like to see himselfas a Physician Assistant once his tenure withthe Navy is up.

Akins will leave for the Great Lakes area onSeptember 3, but he has a cousin, CarterAkins, who will be leaving before him onAugust 2. Carter Akins is the son of Kent andCandace Akins.

The two cousins didn't plan to join together.Carter Akins actually decided to join first andJake was still looking and not fully committedhalf way through his senior year, however, hemet a guy named Max McDonald that wasinfluential. McDonald told him what to expectand he made his decision.

"I'm not really nervous, I'm anxious." saidAkins.

Another recent graduate that is not nervous isTyler Nicholson. He is the son of Bryan andDebbie Nicholson and they moved to Howe in2002 from Fenton, Missouri.

Nicholson decided to join the Army in May of2013 when a recruiter came to the school. Hesaid that it wasn't really anything that theysaid that made him insterested, but moreso thepamphlet that he began to study. He alsoadmitted that the pay that comes with theexperience was also a deciding factor.

Nicholson said he wasn't thinking far enoughdown the road about possible rankings, he'sjust ready to get started.

He will be headed to Fort Benning in Georgiawhere he will stay for 14 weeks.

"I don't think it will be too hard, but it's just

continued from Page #2

going to be really hot." said Nicholson.

Eduardo Cruz will also be heading to FortBenning in September, but Nicholson willhave already been there by then. He will beleaving July 8.

"I'm not nervous, I'm just ready go go andexperience new stuff and travel." saidNicholson.

Asked if he ever thought about what mighthappen if a disaster happened and he foundhimself overseas in the middle of a battle, hesaid the experience of that would be awesomeand rewarding.

Nicholson said that eventually he would liketo be a police officer, but had no particularplans to move back to Texas. Life may takehim and drop him somewhere he's never heardof and that place just very well may be hisnew home.

He said that he will miss his friends and willbe able to hand-write to anyone. He can takehis phone, but he said it depends on whichDrill Sergeant he has whether or not he'll beable to use it or not. He also said that if hewas able to use a cell phone, it would only befor a short time each use.

Nicholson referred to Shawn Cobb assomeone that he's talked to and has told himof what to expect.

"He just got back from Germany and he toldme that I should have ran and done push-upsand sit-ups a lot more than I do." saidNicholson.

The beard that Nicholson has been growingsince graduation is about to be abolished oncehe leaves. He says that he's wanted to growone for a long time, but with school, hecouldn't so he will maintain it until hisdeparture in a few weeks.

Nicholson's former classmate Clay Lewis willbe heading to the Air Force as soon as he getsthe call.

Lewis is the son of Ronald and Jane Lewis.Their family moved to Howe when the future

Airman was in the 7th grade.

"I've always had a great respect for veterans. Mydad was a veteran in the Army and it's a greatcareer path with great benefits.

Upon asking why Lewis chose the Air Forceinstead of the Army like his father, he spoke ofthe technology fields that the Air Force offersmatches his skill set more closely than the otherbranches of the military.

Lewis decided on a military career at thebeginning of his junior year and was sworn in onDecember 5, 2013. He is awaiting on his phonecall to tell him when he will be leaving forLackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.

"I'm excited and anxious to know when I leave."said Lewis.

Not too many individuals have the understandingof the commitment, much less the desire to makethe commitment. From the Class of 2014, thereis one young man that is a Brave. And there arealso seven that are. The people of our cityapplaud you.

Wrestling addictions through salvationSteve Sasser has performed incountries around the globe, trainedwith Stone Cold Steve Austin andknocked out Killer Tim Watson'steeth. He's won matches againstsome of wrestling's most wellknown characters and beat drugaddiction, but now he's battling adifferent foe, alcoholism.

Sasser has experience overcomingtrials from physical injuries duringhis wrestling years, heartbreak, empty bank accounts and debt, butfound a friend in Roger Tidwellwho would eventually lead thefallen star to Christ.

Despite his conversion, gettingmarried and finding a good job,Sasser's addiction demons wouldchange his seemingly transformed

life back into a life of despair.

Steve Sasser was born inAlabama but his family movedto Howe when he was in thethird grade. His mother andfather built the Dairy Queen inHowe back in the 1960's (thebuilding that now is used for aparking facility across from #1Fitness). He grew up onCassandra Street in Howe, wherehis mother still resides. Sasserrecalls his first impressions ofHowe were being shocked thatthere was only a predominantlywhite population.

The future professional wrestlerwas a 1977 graduate of HoweHigh School who played

football, basketball and baseball. He claims that he couldn't make ashot in basketball, but could playpretty good defense which wasgood enough for playing time the1A school. As far as football, heclaims that he wasn't a very goodrunning back because he was “toofat and slow."

Upon small talk and backgroundinformation with Sasser, he quicklychanged the subject from Howe tothe fact that he had the world "inhis hands" (to use a phrase moreappropriate for possible youngreaders). He wanted to tell how thestory of how making a lot of moneyand living the party life of being afamous wrestler on T.V. ultimatelyruined his life.

"I've been around the world 11times including Korea, Japan, SaudiArabia, and 48 of 50 states inAmerica and somebody else paidfor it." said Sasser.

Sasser talked about that part of hislife being a big party with bigwrestling superstars.

"I wrestled with Rick Flair, LexLugar, Sting, I know them all. Ihelped train Stone Cold SteveAustin and Chris Adams." saidSasser.

Upon meeting Kerry Von Erichthrough a friend, the 260 poundSasser was told by Von Erich thathe should consider wrestling.Three days later, Sasser was at theSportatorium in Dallas and in hisfirst match had four stitches to hiseye.

"My first match was with KillerTim Brooks from Waxahachie,Texas. I dropped kicked him in themouth and his tooth went throughhis lip. After that, he said, 'you'vealready got me so get on it.' I wasscared to death the guy was goingto beat the (expletive) out of me. Itscared me to death when I sawblood come out of his mouth. Backthen, when two people got mad ateach other in the ring, they didthrow real punches. It's allentertainment now, but I gotchopped probably 30 times by RickFlair and it leaves an imprint onyour chest and it stings like(expletive)." says Sasser.

Sasser wrestled by the name ofSteve Casey (as the made-upbrother of Scott Casey) and talkedabout how he couldn't walkanywhere in Dallas without beingnoticed. He was a frequent of barsand said that the attention went tohis head.

After recovering from a broken legwhile in the ring as a televisionaudience watched on, he was sentto Portland, Oregon. Heremembered while in Portland thatthe wrestlers stayed in a motelcalled "The Bomber" for $25 pernight and was paid $50 per night.

Sasser traveled to St. Thomas, St.Martin, Anguilla, and Tortola ontour. Dusty Rhodes was thebooking agent who took Sasser onthe tour. Sasser won every match. However, they changed bookingagents, which made him a "middle-card" wrestler, which was not agood guy or a bad guy.

Not happy, Sasser left and went toGermany where they sold outaround 18,000 people per night. He then went to Korea where hewould wrestle the same guy everynight.

"Over there it was real. I wentagainst one of their big-time worldchampion boxer guys. If I stayedfive foot away from him, he'd kickmy brains out. I weighed 240 andhe weighed 190 and if I got a holdof him, I'd body slam him hard. We'd go from town to town andhe'd win the belt one night and I'dwin it the next night." said Sasser

Sasser was making $1,000 permatch and was making a reallygood living. Things were goinggreat for Steve Sasser, who hadeven won "Mr. Texas" in hisweight class for body-building.

However, when the newly formedWWN (World Wrestling Network),started drug-testing, Sasser was oneof the 86 of 99 that failed.

That's where his life took a turn forthe worse. He met and married atopless dancer who had a liking forthe drug most people refer to as"meth."

FaithThe Lord’s Prayer is an importantChristian document. It was carefullyconstructed by Jesus with clear instructionsand that is why it is by far the best known, most quoted and the one commondenominator of all Christian churches. Itsuse probably exceeds all other prayers puttogether. If you don’t know what to pray, pray this perfect prayer. The more I’veanalyze this great and perfect prayer, themore wonderful its construction is to me.It meets all of our needs at each of ourown level.

“Our Father” is to remind us that we areall His children. He did not separate us byrace, gender, economics ordenominations.“Which is in Heaven” clearly establishesthat He is a Spirit being and that ourearthly parents are His children, also. Godis in Heaven and man is on earth.“Hallowed be thy name” simple meansGod is holy and His nature is all good.God has not sent you difficulties but Hewill turn them around to benefit you.Romans 8:28, “And we know that God isalways at work for the good of everyonewho loves Him. They are the ones calledto His purpose.” If you think that God hassent you trouble, no matter the reason, youare giving power to your troubles. Hisname deserves honor and is always goodand perfect. Do not use the name of theLord in anyway other than respect to Himwho it belongs to. It’s not just Him that isholy. His name is holy and set apart fromall others.

“Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, inearth as it is in Heaven” means we arehere to carry out God’s plans. God wrote aplan from His throne in Heaven and put itinto motion through us on earth. It’s notmy will that I pray for it’s His. My willmay hurt me but His will is alwaysperfect. If you find one thing that Godintends for you to do, and you do it, alldoors will open to you; all obstacles inyour path will melt away; you will besuccessful on earth as He purposed inHeaven and you will be happy doing it.Our troubles arise from using our free willin a wrong and selfish way and trying towork apart from God’s will for us.

“Give us this day our daily bread” is anexpression of the child relying on theFather. Children naturally andspontaneously look to their parents tosupply all their wants, and in the same waywe should look to God to supply ours.

by Debbie Wallis

Bread doesn’t mean just food but allthings that we require for a healthy, happy, free and harmonious life. It’s notour jobs, the government or ourinvestments that we need to rely on.That system could and does fail. Godcannot change, fail or fade out and Hissupply is never-ending. This realizationis that God is present in our everydaylife and we need Him daily. He is allgood, all powerful, all wise, and allloving, we have nothing to fear, and wecan depend on Him. John 6:35, “Jesusreplied; I am the bread that gives life!No one who comes to Me will ever behungry. No one who has faith in Mewill ever be thirsty.”

“Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgivethem that trespass against us” is aturning point in this prayer. We are toremind ourselves daily that He forgaveus and we are to forgive others. We mustforgive others to go any further. Jesusdoes not say, “forgive me and I’ll try toforgive other,” or “I will if they change”or “I’ll seek council and go through a 12Step Recovery For Forgiveness” or “I’llforgive in a general term but haveexceptions to how far” or “I’ll say it withmy mouth but my heart is bitter”. Thereare very few people who have not beenhurt by someone in their life and still weare told by Jesus in Luke 6:37, “Don’tjudge others and God won’t judge you ofthe same thing. Don’t be hard on othersand God won’t be hard on you. Forgiveothers and God will forgive you.” God isan all knowing and ever present God.He knew what you would go throughand he still requires forgiveness on yourpart.

“Lead us not into temptation but deliverus from evil” is not contradicting God’sgoodness of never bringing trouble tous. He is always good. Life bringstemptations. As we mature in life andChrist we will face new and powerfultemptations. We face temptations towork for self-glory instead of for God;for personal honor and distinctions andmaterial gain. Beyond all is the deadlysin of spiritual pride. We can be proud ofa job well done but pride says we did itwithout God. Pride says that we arebetter than others. Pride exalts its selfover others. Pride says we deserve thefirst in everything and all the attention.God hates pride. Proverbs 6:16-19,

“There are six or seven things theLordhates. Pride, lying, murder of theinnocent, a heart that makes evil plansand are quick to do wrong, a falsewitness who speaks lies and one whostirs up trouble among his brother.”

“Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever” meansGod is indeed the only One in Heavenand on earth that deserves praise andhonor. He is all power as the Creatorand it’s only Him that can save, heal andset us free from our bondages. He alonecan give you what you need. He alonecan turn sorrow to joy, dullness intolight.

Matthew 6:5 “When you pray, don’t belike those show-offs who love to standup and pray in the meeting places and onthe street corners. They do this just tolook good. I can assure you that theyalready have their reward by theattention they receive.”

“Amen” means we all agree it to be so.Have faith and pray. God loves you anddesires to hear from your heart.

Sasser"The next thing I knew is that I wasup for four days and sleeping fourdays." said Sasser. I blew all of mymoney, got a divorce and movedback to my mother’s house inHowe to get back on track. I havelied to her and stolen from her. Ihave treated this woman the worstin the world, but she still loves me.She's stuck behind me thick andthin. And then one day, when I ranher credit card up to $10,000, andshe confronted me about it, I toldmyself it's time to stop. I wentcold-turkey."

While living on Cassandra St inHowe, he became an acquaintanceof his neighbor Roger Tidwell, whohappened to be the preacher at theFirst Baptist Church of Howe.

Tidwell, who had always beenfascinated with wrestling and inparticular The Von Erich family.Through Sasser, he could had apersonal connection to them andbegan to immediately wanting tolearn first-hand about wrestling andhis life.

“My first impression of him wasthat he was a blow-hard.Everything had to be about him.He was a self-promoter, which isprobably why he was so good atwrestling.” said Tidwell. “I sort offelt sorry for him because knowingthat he used to be a wrestler andbody builder and his body didn’tlook like that anymore. I pitiedhim. But he is one of the mostsensitive guys I’ve ever met andhe’s just an interesting guy.”

Because of Sasser's

methamphetamine habit, he didn’tsleep much and worked at nightrefinishing old furniture to sell inorder to make some money. Beinginterested in carpentry gave Tidwell achance to go and visit with him whilehe worked. They also had in commonthat they were the same age and bothgraduated in ’77.

At the time, Sasser was still using thedrug and was paranoid that peoplewere watching him. One afternoon, someone was. Howe Police ChiefTom Mrozinski confronted Sasserabout watering his yard on a day thatwas not a scheduled watering day.Tidwell received a phone call from aneighbor that something bad wasabout to happen between Sasser andthe officer.

“I ran out of the back door and I knewthat Steve, even though he was out ofshape was still a trained wrestler. Ialso knew that a cop was trained andhad a gun. I was afraid that if they gotto arguing that if Steve jumped onhim, that he (Mrozinski) might shootSteve.” said Tidwell. “I grabbed thefirst thing I could find to hit Stevewith. I had a shovel and ran aroundthe corner, but Mrozinski was soprofessional. He told me to stop andnot come any further and to let himhandle it.”

“I thought it was my day to water. Hepulled up in his car and told me itwasn’t my time to water and I toldhim “expletive you.” said Sasser. “Itold him I’d kick his “expletive. Thatwas the wrong thing to say, but I toldhim I’d take his nightstick and wearhim out with it. I told him I ate macefor breakfast.”

Finally after a while, Sasser gavein and accepted being arrested forterroristic threats for threateningan officer. He admitted thatMrozinski did nothing wrongexcept catch him in a bad mood.

“Thankfully they dropped thecharges and me and Tom havebeen friends ever since.” saidSasser.

Even after stealing water fromTidwell’s house the next day, they began to become closer andcloser friends.

“Eventually, I think he just ranout of money to buy his stuff andrealized that his life was a mess.said Tidwell.

"I told him, if you'll quit askingme to go to church, I might justgo, but quit bugging me about it."said Sasser.

“I used that statement to talkabout God. God’s the answer, notchurch.” said Tidwell.

Tidwell talked to him about TheLord and how He would changehis life. While Sasser was stillspiraling downward, he finallyagreed to come to church if hecould sit in the balcony with thesound guy. Tidwell got him achair to sit up there.

After about six months ofattending services regularly,Tidwell gave his invitation, as hedoes every week. Sasser wentdown to his friend Tidwell andsaid, "Hey, you've never lied tome before have you?" Tidwell

responded with "no." Sasserresponded with "I’m ready to askJesus into my heart."

It was that day that the entirecongregation gave Steve Sasserthe biggest and most importantcheer he had ever received.

“Everybody had been praying forhim and everybody knew whatwas going on. So we knelt downand hugged.” said Tidwell.

Knowing the past of the formerkid from Howe who had turnedfamous and a warrior for anythingbut Christ, had come home.Howe's most famous person hadseen the light.

Sasser was a model citizen for along time and never toucheddrugs for many years.

He met his current wife Deanna15 years ago and was married byTidwell at his mother's house onCassandra. He became a UPSdriver and lived a verycomfortable lifestyle with his wifealso working for the company.

They were living in the nicest ofneighborhoods around Lamberthand Turtle Creek in Sherman. After averaging 200 stops per dayon his route, one day over theholidays, Sasser made 329 stopsand was through at 11pm. It wasthat shift that he decided toreward himself with a drink. "Therest is history and I've been analcoholic ever since." said Sasser."It started with a drink only on the

weekends and then after selling my routes twoyears ago, it became an everyday occurrence.Instead of mixing the drinks, I would just drinkthe bottle."

Sasser has been in the hospital several times andeven recently with withdraws.

"You can put this in the paper; I got busted forsteroids a few years ago. They offered me oneyear probation and I got deferred adjudicationand I don't have a record. But I have to go inevery month and (urinate) for them. I won't lie,(it's awful).

Sasser says that he must go once per month butcan go more than that upon the request of hisprobation officer.

"He has the power to put me in jail, so I don'tmess around." says Sasser. "My poor motherhates it because all she says she wants is to diewith good credit and know that her kids are ok.

That's what I'm struggling with right now.

Anytime that Sasser would talk about histroubles, he would always refer back to Tidwellas a source of strength through friendship. Oneof Tidwell's birthdays, Sasser gave him a plaquethat was called "The Best Friend Award."Tidwell gave him one back with the scripture ofIsaiah 40:31, "But they who wait for the Lordshall renew their strength; they shall mount upwith wings like eagles; they shall run and not beweary; they shall walk and not faint."

Sasser said that he is lucky to have his wife andstated that any other woman would have walkedout and left.

"Back when I was drinking every day, I went torehab. Rehab is not for everyone and it wasn'tfor me. They have 20 counselors telling you thesame exact thing. I was in there with a bunch of28 year-old people and I just wanted out.Deanna came down there every day and went toclasses with me.

One day, Sasser told his wife he couldn't gothrough it anymore and told his wife to come gethim, in which she did.

After leaving rehab, Sasser went four monthswithout a drink but slipped up again after astressful occurrence.

"I went straight to the liquor store and got abottle." said Sasser. "I had about 15 shots of itand I called Deanna and said 'you're going to beso mad at me.' I then poured the bottle out."

He wound up going back and helping the peoplethat he had sold his routes to because they werestruggling with all of the locations. However, the pending steroid charge ended upcosting him his position and he's currentlyseeking employment.

When asked about his current level of faith,he paused and said that was a tough question.

"I've still got faith, but I'm still drinking anddoing wrong things. I feel like as long as I'mdrinking and not living right, none of myprayers are going to be answered." saidSasser. "I could give a long testimony, butI'd (expletive) some people off because theremight be some cuss words in there. Not thatcussing makes me sound any better, but it'sjust like drinking. It's a habit."

Since the interview of this article, Sasser hasreconnected with Tidwell and some otherfriends that he used to attend services with.He made the statement that he hopes theyoung man who got drafted can handle thespotlight better than he did. He said thatfame is good, but God is better. Sasser hastold Tidwell that he will be attending themen’s non-denominational weekly Biblestudy at FBC Howe on Tuesday nights. Hewants to get back on the right track and hopesthat he can influence young people to nottake the path he has taken.

At the conclusion of the article, Sasser askedfor prayers and hoped that this would helphim get back on track.
