SOUTH ALABAMA VS HOWARD STATE NOTES The Game This is a non-conference match-up between the Bison of Howard University from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and the Jaguars of South Alabama from the SunBelt Conference. It is the final round of the Gotham Classic. South Alabama is winless (0-3) in the Classic after dropping a 71-65 overtime decision to IUPUI on December 20. The Bison (1-2) are hoping to finish at .500 after losing a hard-fought 53-45 road decision to Pepperdine last Wednesday.

The Coaches Howard is coached by Kevin Nickelberry (Virginia Wesleyan, ‘86), who is in his fifth year and has a 37-101 record to date. Nickelberry’s overall record is 127-175 in 10-plus years as a head coach. South Alabama is coached by Matthew Graves, who is in his second season there and has a 13-27 record to date there.

Series Record This is the first matchup between the two teams.

Last Time Out The Bison dropped a hard-fought 53-45 decision to Pepperdine on Wednesday. In that game, Howard was led by James “J-Byrd” Daniel, III who scored a game-high 22 points while James “JC” Carlton recorded a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds. South Alabama (2-7) got a game-high 23 points from Ken Williams off the bench and 18 points and 6 assists from Taishaun Johnson in the OT loss at IUPUI.

The Big Three

Daniel, Miller and Carlton account for 67 percent of the team’s 62 points per game.

The J-Byrd Factor

James “J-Byrd” Daniel, III has been a marked man after averaging 21 points per game as a freshman and being named the MEAC Preseason Player of the Year. While the talented sophomore’s scoring average is a bit down from last year, he has become a more effective player. His presence has allowed teammates Carlton and Miller to get more scoring opportunities. Daniel leads the team in assists and in steals. Daniel has scored in double figures in all but two games in his young career.

Miller Time “JT” Miller is rapidly emerging as one of the top players on the team. After being slowed down by sore knees last season, Miller has come on strong this season and is one of the reasons the Bison are off to one of their best starts in recent history. The 6-4 sophomore from Clinton, NC, ranks second on the team in scoring. He leads the team in field goal shooting (48 percent) and in free throw shooting (74 percent) and is second in steals and third in assists.

Rebounding

The Bison are getting strong rebounding from Carlton, Marcel Boyd, Damon Collins and Oliver Ellison to the tune of a plus 5 advantage in 13 games. Howard ranks in the nation’s Top 20 in total rebounds.

Page 3: HOWARD UNIVERSITY · Frantic 40" 2014-15 SCHEDULE November 14 at University of Miami L, 49-82 16 vs Goucher College W, 101-54 18 at College of William & Mary L,49-56

Coming Around

After sitting out the past two seasons, College of Charleston transfer James “JC” Carlton was expected to make an impact right away. The 6-8 senior forward from Winterville, NC has shown in flashes what could be on the horizon. He currently leads the team in rebounding and blocked shots, is second in field goal shooting (46 percent), third in scoring and fourth in steals.

The Nickelberry Factor

Nickelberry is always preaching defense to his young team and apparently they are listening. Over the past five games, Howard has held its opponents to an average of 52 points per game. The pressure “Frantic 40” defense has forced over 8 steals per game, good enough to rank in the Top 20 nationally. And when opponents have been able to get through the pressure defense, Oliver Ellison, Carlton and Boyd have been there to block an average of 3.3 shots per contest.

Scouting the Jaguars

South Alabama has lost four in a row, two of which were in overtime. Jaguars are shooting 39 percent from the field while opponents are shooting almost 45 percent. Williams and Johnson are the only South Alabama players to average in double figures.

Unsung

While the Big Three of Daniel, Carlton and Miller gets most of the accolades, Collins and Norsworthy contribute in small but effective ways. Collins, a 6-5 sophomore guard from Dallas, TX, is averaging 5.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. He is also very effective in the Bison’s pressure defense with his length. Norsworthy spent most of last season as a reserve with limited playing time. But this season, the 6-2 senior from Pasadena, CA, has been the team’s most reliable reserve, averaging 5.1 points and almost 4 rebounds per game. Norsworthy got his first start in the Pepperdine game and responded with 6 points and 6 rebounds.

Next Up

Howard will have a few days off before traveling to the Bronx, NY to take on Fordham on December 29 at pm. The Jaguars resume play Arkansas State on Wednesday, December 30 at 7 pm.

Howard University Head Coach

KEVIN NICKELBERRY HOWARD UNIVERSITY HEAD COACH

2014-15 IS FIFTH YEAR AS HU HEAD COACH & NINTH YEAR OVERALL AS A HEAD COACH

Kevin Nickelberry Howard University Head Coach Kevin Nickelberry enters his fifth season as head coach of the Howard University men’s basketball team. During the past four seasons, Nickelberry has begun to build the program back to respectability. Regarded as one of the top recruiters in America, Nickelberry put together one of the top recruiting classes in school history last season, featuring nine freshmen. Included in that class was James “J-Bird” Daniel, the freshman phenom who set the college game on fire with his prolific scoring and was named the MEAC Rookie of the Year and is the 2014-15 MEAC Preseason Player of the Year. With the outstanding class in tow, the Howard University men’s basketball program under Nickelberry is prime to establish itself as one of the tops in the MEAC.

Prior to coming to Howard, Nickel- berry served as the head coach of the Libya National Basketball team. Before that, he was head coach at Hampton University from 2006-09. During his three year tenure with the Pirates, Nickelberry helped guide his teams to 20 non-conference wins. He collected 49 Division 1 wins during that period to rank second among MEAC schools.

Before Hampton, he was an assistant at Clemson and made an impact on the program there during his tenure from 2003- 06 when he recruited nine players on the Tigers’ 2007-08 and 2008-09 NCAA

Tournament teams. Before that, Nickelberry was the assistant coach at UNC Charlotte for two seasons.

Over that period in 2001-03, he helped develop Eddie Basden, the second player in Conference USA history to win Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year awards in the same season. Nickelberry also contributed to successful programs at Holy Cross and Monmouth. For his efforts, Nickelberry was rated among the Top 25 “Up-and-Coming” college basketball coaches by The Sporting News and Hoopscooponline.com in 2008. Nickelberry began his coaching career as the head women’s basketball coach at Columbia Union College in 1991 and moved to Howard University for four seasons, from 1994-98. While at Howard, he played a role in the recruitment of backto- back MEAC Rookies of the Year.

During his time in the coaching ranks, the versatile Nickelberry worked in all areas, including recruiting, fundraising, marketing and public relations. Nickelberry has become active in the Washington, DC community due to his campaign for Stop the Bullying among youth. The Kevin Nickelberry basketball camp has also shown tremendous growth during his tenure at Howard, featuring youth from all over the District of Columbia/Maryland/ Virginia area. Nickelberry graduated from Virginia Wesleyan in 1986 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications. He and his wife, Mamie have two sons, Kyan and Kelby.
